Grandpa, this one is for you. 🇵🇬🩵Today I honor the extraordinary life of my grandfather, Charles Cheathem, a man of wisdom, service, creativity, curiosity and resilience.

From being a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, serving in the U.S. Air Force, becoming one of the first Black aerospace engineers to contribute to the Apollo program helping advance human exploration by designing space shuttles, to serving as Papua New Guinea’s Honorary Consul General for 37 years, he lived a life of purpose and impact. Working alongside Papua New Guinea officials, he supported the Pasifika island nation, contributed to decolonization efforts and helped protect the sacredness of the land and sea.

He was also a world traveler, GIA Certified Gemologist, jewelry designer and proudly lived more than 50 years in recovery from alcoholism—a testament to his strength, perseverance and commitment to growth.

Above all, he never stopped learning and maintained a deep love for life until the very end. His final honor came from Chief Ces Iewago Barupi Ijiba of Papua New Guinea, who had known him and my father for decades, a testament to the relationships he built and the lives he touched across the world. 🇵🇬🪶

No list could ever capture what he meant to those who loved him. I am who I am because of him. He heavily supported my journey becoming a lawyer and role as an environmentalist & work in saving our coral reefs 🪸🐠

May he rest among the ancestors and shine as a Shining One. One of light, immortal and eternal. 🩵✨

Song translation:

“Day by day we walk on,
Our feet pressing the same earth.
Our fathers and our fathers’ fathers
Walked day by day while they walked on.
Hush, little ones,
Don’t tell the earth we love her yet.
We will sleep in her soon enough,
But for now, we walk on.”

🩵 Thank you to my seastars at @catalinaislandmermaids for supporting my tribute swim on Catalina Island in his honor. A special thanks to @thesharonnat for capturing this heartfelt moment in the ocean with me so beautifully.🩵🧜🏾‍♀️🫶🏾
