🗞️📫 The "Ara Sıra" newsletter has just been sent out and should reach your inboxes around 10:00 this morning. In the newsletter, I talk about my events, meetups, profiles of local artists, and places and cultural events in Hamburg that have caught my eye. Ara Mekân's meet-ups sometimes fill up very quickly, so I give priority to newsletter subscribers.

Hamburg’un herhangi bir yerinde karşınıza çıkabiliriz; bir tiyatro lobisinde, bir göl kenarında, bir müzede ya da belki de hiç beklemediğiniz bir adreste. Tek bir adrese sığamıyoruz, farklı buluşmalar için farklı mekânlardayız.

You might come across us anywhere in Hamburg: in a theatre foyer, by a lake, in a museum, or perhaps at a location you’d never expect. No fixed address, no single venue. We show up in different places for different meetups.

🌿 Ara Mekân ist jetzt da.

Ihr könnt uns überall in Hamburg antreffen: in einem Theaterfoyer, am Seeufer, in einem Museum oder vielleicht an einem Ort, an dem ihr es gar nicht erwartet hättet. Wir sind nicht an einen einzigen Veranstaltungsort gebunden, sondern für verschiedene Treffen an unterschiedlichen Orten dabei.

Dear people of Hamburg,
Hi 🙋🏻‍♀️

I do actually have a real business card for myself. But until we meet in person, this napkin will have to do ☕️🕰️🐇

I’m a psychologist in Hamburg with my BA, MA, PhD degrees recognized in Germany. Yet I am not just that… I’m also building a community, Ara Mekân, for everyone who believes in the importance of cultural diversity.

Some of my events are trilingual: English, Turkish, German. Some events are only in English, some are only in Turkish. Why go through all this trouble? I believe creating a space for expressing oneself in their mothertongue is just as important as creating one for intercultural exchange.

Most of my services (counseling & workshops) happen in Grindelviertel/Rotherbaum, but for bigger group meetups, where and how we’ll cross paths still remains a surprise ✨

Sonbahar deyince sizin aklınıza ne geliyor? Mevsim geçişleri önemli aslında, diğer geçişler gibi. Hamburg’da iki mevsim arasında bir yerlerdeyken bugünkü random araştırmamdan öğrendiklerimi sizlerle paylaşmak istedim. Doğa ile bağımızı güçlendirmeyi kıymetli buluyorum, belki bu yazıyı okuduktan sonra yaprak döken ağaçlara farklı bir yerden bakabilirsiniz 🍃🍂🍁 by @ara.mekan

Intention changes everything: Awe and wonder. Curiosity and deep focus. Art and connection.

Running around inside the galleries like kids while outside is pouring like crazy. Playing mindfulness games, getting to know complete strangers, having deep talks inside extraordinary spaces.

Reflection.

Admiration.

Remembering to slow down.

Spending not seconds, but minutes in front of an artwork. Appreciation. Introspection. Strolling down the streets of Hamburg with a purpose: Personalizing the city through art, through people, through creating beautiful memories by being present.

A special thanks to Lena (@lena.caroline.hoffmann) and Lucia (@galeriekaufmann) for reminding us so much beauty can be found in between oceans and the land and we should cherish and protect both worlds.

Also a huge thanks to Sarice (@thespace.city) for opening up their space to us and to Nick (@wachsworldwide) for a wonderful introduction into this meticulously curated exhibition about existing in between, transitioning, and embracing liminality with its uncertainties.

Last winter was hard, so that became a regular conversation topic in Hamburg. Showing friends how I survived it: With other people, with ideas, and with hobbies. The idea for Ara Mekân also came to me during that time. I’ve just defended my thesis, came back to Hamburg, feeling the “What now?” vibes very strongly. Anyway, that vase was about to be thrown out on the street, zum Verschenken, asked if I could take it with me, then painted it very slowly over the dark weeks. “Man darf nicht” said my old flatmate, when I was painting my door bright yellow. Well, sometimes man darf nicht, but man misses the sunshine a bit too much. And a hello to my dear landlord, you’d understand, oder? taken in Hamburg by @ara.mekan

@gocmeninguncesi is my “Glück” in Hamburg. I feel both happy and lucky that our paths have crossed here. Dila is a psychologist and a sociologist. She writes, she dances, she sees things in a way noone else can. She talks in metaphors and images, her writings move you deeply. She loves to live a full life, she is filled with energy and zest. So, of course she was the speaker for last month’s talk!

We talked about happiness, why is it so flickery, so treacherous, what can we do to obtain happiness in difficult times, is it better to have lived and have regrets or is it better to create a safe space where no regrets can visit, why is it important to think about what makes us happy and fulfilled in this one life that we have. The theme “courage” came up, and that’s for this month’s talk! See you at 30.09. to discuss “Existential Courage”. This month “Ara-Kesit” talk will be held in English! Our dear Gökçe is one of the speakers 🥳 More on that later 🙃

Back to “Happiness” talk… Great crowd, mindbending conversations, thank you all who came and brought their lovely energy with them!

Mutluluk hakkında yeni bir şey söylemek çok iddialı. Hepimiz biliyoruz zaten bizi neyin mutlu ettiğini... Öyle değil mi?

Mutluluğu birlikte yeniden düşünmek nasıl olurdu? Hiç bilmiyormuş gibi, en baştan keşfediyormuş gibi...

Ara-Kesit Söyleşi’de bu ay mutluluk tartışıyoruz. Ya da biz psikologlar terim kullanmayı severiz, teknik terimle “iyi-oluş”, daha da özelinde “ontolojik iyi-oluş”. Demokratik Misafirlik formatında yapılıyor. İç halkada konuşmacılar var, ama bir sandalye her zaman sizin için boş tutuluyor. Dinlemekten konuşmaya geçiş yapabilirsiniz, dilerseniz. Bir fikir paylaşabilir ya da konuşmacılara soru sorabilirsiniz.

Açık bir zihinle gelmeniz yeterli, demli çay ve misafir terlikleri bizden.
