I’ve got an idea and I’m putting it into action. On the one hand, I’m looking for a flat in Hamburg; on the other, I’m studying German. In between, I do things like this.

‘Ara Mekân’ is a summary of the things, people, books, music and encounters that lift me back up again every time.

@gocmeninguncesi is my “Glück” in Hamburg. I feel both happy and lucky that our paths have crossed here. Dila is a psychologist and a sociologist. She writes, she dances, she sees things in a way noone else can. She talks in metaphors and images, her writings move you deeply. She loves to live a full life, she is filled with energy and zest. So, of course she was the speaker for last month’s talk!

We talked about happiness, why is it so flickery, so treacherous, what can we do to obtain happiness in difficult times, is it better to have lived and have regrets or is it better to create a safe space where no regrets can visit, why is it important to think about what makes us happy and fulfilled in this one life that we have. The theme “courage” came up, and that’s for this month’s talk! See you at 30.09. to discuss “Existential Courage”. This month “Ara-Kesit” talk will be held in English! Our dear Gökçe is one of the speakers 🥳 More on that later 🙃

Back to “Happiness” talk… Great crowd, mindbending conversations, thank you all who came and brought their lovely energy with them!

Cheers (literally),
Deniz

💬This event is in Turkish.

You know it’s there, even if you can’t see it. We all learned the basics of science, so we know how the solar system works, right? Yes, it’s definitely there. It had an eclipse last week! This is not a movie set, it’s a real city, called Hamburg. And your name is not Truman. The grey is the real colour, not a backdrop. It makes you appreciate the colour blue. And yellow! Yes, that’s why there’s grey!

Imagine you were a shade of grey. That would make your life so much easier. You would know what your purpose in life is. You don’t have to look for any deeper meaning. You are the meaning. You make people cheer for it when they see 1qm of the sun and you make the color blue pop! What a life 💙

A note before you look at these photos:
Some people think Ara Mekân is a café—it’s not. We’re a psychology, art, and community platform. And I should say upfront: I’m not a chef, and this is not your typical cooking workshop.

„Sarma für Alle“ is something different. It’s an afternoon where we cook together, yes, but the real work happens around the table. We make sarma, grape leaves and vegetables wrapped with rice, herbs, and stories. We talk about where food comes from, what it means to us, and how the kitchens and tables we remember shape who we are. We roll the leaves with our hands while we speak about food culture, home, memory and identity. We then share Turkish tea at our garden while sarma is cooking. We listen to each other. We taste what we made, of course. And we clean up together.

The photos are from that afternoon last month. They show what happened when we gathered. They lack all the laughs and shared memories. First strangers, then connected on a different level through a shared table.

Sounds interesting? There’s no recipe you need to know beforehand. No technique to master. Just presence, curiosity, and willingness to be in this space with others.

More on the newsletter.

All the best,
Deniz

F*m*n*st*sch*s Str*cktr*ff*n… Was noch?

We all need a short break. In Turkish, ‘ara’ refers to the space between two things, but it also means a pause, a moment to catch one’s breath. And then there is the verb ‘aramak’ (to search). Originally, it carried a physical meaning: to pass between two things, to part them, or to push through. Over time, it shifted to mean trying to find something or someone, and as it grew more abstract, it came to mean longing for something or feeling its absence. We are all still searching for something. Perhaps we need to pass through certain things and leave certain old patterns behind… What do you think?

•••
