On launch day of NASA’s Artemis II, my mom found a letter she’d received from her father when she was just a little girl. As she read her father’s words, tears filled her eyes. John Penn, my grandfather, retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer and was stationed on the USS Arlington when the USS Hornet recovered the astronauts returning from the moon in the Apollo 11 mission. This mission was the first to land humans on the moon. Given that the USS Arlington was part of the Manned Spacecraft Recovery Force, President Nixon spent the night aboard the vessel before joining the USS Hornet the following day to greet the astronauts.

My grandfather wrote this letter on 7/22/1969 in anticipation of the astronauts’ return. Subsequently, two days later the envelope was decorated with stamps, indicating the successful recovery and historic mission.

I’m black and I’m beautiful. In high school I watched this video, I believe from the 1970s, of these cute black kids in a classroom setting affirming the above statement. Five simple words that can literally change one’s life. Words carry weight. That’s why they’re used to write laws. That’s why they’re used to win elections. And there are those used to divide and tear down.
For a young child, it’s extremely important for words to be crafted into ideals promoting acceptance and love for not only themself, but their neighbors. This impacts the way they view themself. This affects their actions carried upon others. Internalized words transform into lenses through which we engage the world. These fundamentals create systems in us, influencing how we act and react. Be a guard over the words that aim to define you. by @aramgriz

See us. Hear us. Feel us. Our hearts. Our voices. Our souls. Black Lives Matter.
What does it mean to be human? If you’re not seen, heard, or felt, do you matter? If you don’t see, hear, or feel, are you human?

To be recognized, clearly captured, and understood during one’s flash of time in the world. To be loved and to love. To Live. To Live. To Live. To Not be followed simply because of the color of your skin. To Not be criminalized just for breathing. To Not be disregarded or disrespected. To breathe, to jog, to sleep in peace. To Be Able To Be. To be human is really what we make. Collectively we define. We can choose a bitter collage of pictures, incidents, and stories to scrapbook our time in the world. Riddle it with murder, oppression, abuse, institutional defect, ignorance, and a simple unwillingness to understand. Or we can create a beautiful snapshot; a stunning display connecting us. Each of us a pixel in the greater picture. What we could be guided with kindness, understanding, and equality in the truest way.

I want to be a part of humanity that realizes how special and rare each pixel is. One that understands how complicated and delicately balanced the frame is and takes every precaution to safeguard its preservation, integrity, and betterment. To be free of fear. To be free of judgement. To be free of hate. To see. To hear. To feel.
