To my son,

There are many moments in my life that I've prayed and meditated on, receiving a solution almost instantaneously but never understating the gravity of what I asked for. I spent many years praying that God would repair my womb so that I could experience motherhood just once. Seven years later, here you are, yet I still hold my breath, praying that I understand the gravity of what I have received. Most of all, I pray that I can provide a fiercely delicate love that transcends time, carrying you from one moment to the next so that you remain maskless, beautiful, and human. Lastly, the greatest lesson I’ve learned thus far is there are fundamental truths and things that are only true for the moment. You are my most significant and most boundless gift; that is the fundamental truth of your creation.

This is my Great Grandmother, also known as Effie Mae Crossford but formally known as Gran Gran. With the Holiday Season creeping in during the middle of a pandemic, wavering political climate, and sheer uncertainty I’ve been trying to remind myself of what grounds me.

My Gran-Gran is getting older. While her spirit is still raging with love and joy I can’t deny that there is one thing that I miss most from my childhood and that is her Soul Food. When I was a child, we would gather every Sunday at Gran-Grans for her Soul Food. For a child, this gathering felt like a long anticipated field trip. It was the one chance per week that I got to see all of my cousins, aunts, and uncles. My focus was often on the made-up games between my cousins and me or trying to sneak a soda before dinner. However, sometimes I would sneak away from child’s play and observe my Gran Gran in the kitchen. I stared in admiration thinking “How in the world does she remember how to make all of this stuff”? The funny thing Is she was not just creating food but an environment and shield for her loved ones to exist.

I know that we all know that soul food is more than just food. Soul Food at Gran Grans’ laid the foundation for my blossoming womanhood. Her Soul Food is a protest to grief. It was her gift of love and pride from loved ones that only she had memories of. It was an invitation to silence the noise that life creates. It was the protection of her lineage because it meant that we were all there, together, in one room. For this, my Gran Gran will always be my anchor. Soul Food Sundays was the greatest form of love I’ve received and these memories will continue to carry me throughout my life. What an amazing woman. by @aramiharris
