Last break of the season. End of summer dump + thoughts 💭

Fun facts: The tenor steel pan/steel drum has 32 notes. The double tenor has 32-36 notes 🫶🏽. Idk how many notes the bass has lmao.

The steel pan is the only family of acoustic instruments invented in the 20th century 😮‍💨🙌🏽

Started in Trinidad & Tobago. Roots extend to enslaved Africans who were banned from playing their drums. In the 1880s they took that bs and created other percussion traditions like Tamboo Bamboo ofc pulling from West African cultures and Carnival. In the 1930s the bands started incorporating discarded metal objects. By the 1940s pans were being made from 55-gallon oil drums. The 50s brought improvements like tuning. The 60s really cemented the legacy of Steel pan/drum

I love the evolution of this instrument 🇹🇹 🛢️🪘🥁

What happens when you stop talking at young people and start listening to them?

We kicked off the Civic Campus Tour at Wayne State, asking students what they care about, what they want from the people representing them, and what they think the future should look like.

These are just a few moments from the conversations we had 👀

U-M Ann Arbor is next and we can’t wait!

What’s one issue you wish politicians talked about more?

For Oksana, it’s water infrastructure. 💧

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about politics, but for her, it’s personal. Working in the field @motmot.ai has given her a whole new perspective on how water infrastructure impacts the community and why it matters.

What’s an issue you think deserves more attention? 👇🏾 by @arathemecca

“It’s really tough to know who to vote for and why you should vote for them.” - @dr_dew313

We’ve been out talking to voters about their opinions on the state of politics.

We want to hear from you 🫵🏽

Do you agree or disagree? What do you look for when deciding who to vote for? 👇🏽 taken in Detroit, Michigan by @arathemecca

If young people ran the country for a year, what would change first? 👀

During Michigan Tech Week and yesterday at Wayne State, we asked young people exactly that. We can’t wait to share their perspectives.

We know before we can talk about getting young people engaged, we have to actually listen to what they care about.

That’s why we’re going on tour. We want to have real conversations, hear what’s on your mind, and make civic engagement feel a little more like us.

And today? We’re officially 40 days out from Election Day 🥳. You can now request your absentee ballot in Michigan. 🗳️

So whether you’re voting absentee or heading to the polls, make sure your voice is part of the conversation.
