The Ent. The Groot Tree. In 3D.

Another amazing @atfwmworcestershire Field Visit (shoutout once again to James and all my fellow group volunteers).

Today we were at Brocton Coppice, catching up with Karen Andrews and the ranger team from @staffordshirecountycouncil

They’re doing important work managing one of Cannock Chase’s most unique sites, home to ancient and veteran Sessile oaks that have seen more than a few centuries pass.

One tree in particular is getting a lot of attention.

Locals call it the ā€œEntā€ or ā€œGrootā€ tree.

And like anything that gains social media fame, it’s now facing a new kind of pressure: footfall and compaction.

Everyone wants a selfie, who can blame them. But with that comes real risk to the preservation of the tree and its surroundings.

We talked through some practical options from dead hedging, low-impact fencing, and even purpose-built selfie/photo spots to steer footfall without spoiling the experience.

And we demoed something a bit different: an AR experience that lets people scan a QR code and Treeleporterā„¢ (see a previous post this week) to the tree.

Not as good as being there, obviously, but immersive enough that some agreed it could help take pressure off the real thing.

And guess what? The It’s experience is also incredible for accessibility.

QR code and link for the experience dropping soon šŸ‘€

The Majesty Oak

Growing on an estate in Kent is a truly magical and magnificent ancient oak known as "Majesty." It's been a long-term dream of mine to meet this amazing tree, and last weekend, my dream was realised. I've met a lot of ancient trees in my life, but little did i know that this meeting with Majesty would have such an impact on me that will live with me forever.

All ancient trees have an air of mystery and something magical about them, but Majesty is in a different league of her own. I was privileged to spend two hours in her company, which in tree time is a blink of an eye. Standing there, you couldn't help be humbled and in awe of this amazing ancient tree.

Majesty is estimated to be potentially around 800 to 1000 years old and has a girth of over 12.6 metres. She's famous for being the largest maiden oak (term used to describe a tree which has its original form and crown architecture and hasnt been historically pollarded) in the country.

Majesty was originally an open grown tree growing near the old manor house until it burned down in the 1940s. Over the centuries, her crown architecture has hardly changed since the c.18th century.

Growing near Majesty are two other maiden ancient trees known as "Stately" with a girth of 7.5 metres and "Beauty" with a girth of 6.2 metres.

As ancient trees come, Majesty is in a league of her own. There is something magical about spending time with her that it seems like all time slows down and you feel at one with Majesty and your surroundings. Sharing this time with Majesty is a lifelong dream realised, and it was even more special to spend it with best friend and ancient tree nerd @arbinnovators 🌳

We noticed something while editing this footage we captured during the @atfwmworcestershire Group field visit.

For a day centred around ancient and veteran trees, we hadn’t filmed many trees.

We had once again found ourselves drawn to filming people interacting with trees.

People sharing stories, adventures, experience and knowledge.

Catching up with old friends.
Making new ones.

Heading off together in search of the next tree, the next discovery or the next adventure.

And editing this footage got us thinking.
To us, that is what these events are about.

The shared passion for trees brings us together, but it is the community around them that makes the experience what it is.

More and more, we find ourselves filming those connections.

People with trees, and tree people with each other.

A community.

Massive shoutout to @jimbotrees for organising another great event, and fellow volunteers rob keyzor and @katie__erin__lewis for their continued support of the group. Also to Greg williamson and @nationaltrust @ntshugborough for hosting us - oh, and @thetreehunter for his infectious tree tales!

If a Tree Falls šŸŽ„

The age old question.

We wanted to create a slightly different, short edit with some of the footage captured during an @ancienttreesatf Group Organisers visit to @blenheimpalace at the weekend.

The Little Planet of Oak Bracket šŸ„

We’ve always thought Oak Bracket was one of the most interesting fungi you can find on a tree.

From a distance, it can seem like little more than a heavy, irregular golden mass at the base of an oak.

Up close, it’s like an alien planet. Strange, swirling textures cover the surface. Lava-like amber droplets seep from it, with tiny insect inhabitants weaving between them (or trapped in them).

Crouch down, get close, and you discover there’s an entire world happening on the surface.

These images are just an excuse to look at it properly.

One of the coolest tree fungi out there.

Yesterday, we finally gave in.

We spotted this sweet chestnut about a year ago.

The sort of tree that makes you slow down every time you pass it.

Yesterday, after a nearby tree survey, we finally pulled up outside the house. Walked up the private driveway. Knocked on the door.

Then had to explain to a very confused homeowner that we weren’t selling tree work.

We weren’t touting our services.

We didn’t want anything.

Other than 5 minutes to admire their tree.

She looked understandably confused and a little concerned.

It left us wondering if we were perhaps the first people to have ever asked.

Fortunatley, she said yes.

So we kept our promise.
Five minutes.
A few photos.
No 3D scan this time (there’s a fine line between enthusiasm and taking the mickey).

But what a tree.

A proper reminder that some of the best trees aren’t in parks, collections, or ancient woodland.

They’re just quietly standing in people’s gardens, behind gates, in villages, being passed every day, often by people who have no idea just how special they are.

To the homeowner. Thanks šŸ™šŸ»

The Darley Dale Yew is ridiculous.

In the best possible way.

Reputed to be up to 2,000 years old, standing in the churchyard of St Helen’s in Derbyshire, it is one of those trees that makes you think for a second.

Potentially 2,000 years old. Conservatively 800 years old.

Before modern roads.
Before the industrial age.
Before the 800 year old churchyard it stands in.

Full of character. Hollowing, twisting, retrenching, adapting. Doing what ancient trees do.

Yews are incredible trees. They don’t age neatly. They become more complex. More sculptural. More alive with history.

This one is doing exactly what it should and we’re here for it.

Teaching people about trees using VR headsets. I met Callum years ago through tiktok and our scanning passion. Always great to catch up and hear what is working on.

I like talking to the subject matter experts whilst doing a scan it’s like doing an on-site Podcast it goes a little bit like this….

Maybe it’ll be my new series

Thanks to Callum Throw for the intel!
