Fantastic day on Thursday co-leading the @ancienttreesatf West Midlands and Worcestershire field visit at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire.

Bradgate is famous as the birthplace of the “Nine Days Queen,” Lady Jane Grey. The park features 16th-century Tudor ruins and the iconic 18th-century “Old John” tower, which was gifted to the public in 1928. The park is also famous for its geology and contains some of the oldest exposed fossils in England, with rock formations dating back to the Precambrian period.

The walk took in the old deer park, several woodland copses, and Hell Hole, which contains a plethora of ancient oaks, with several trees dating back to the 14th century. The walk concluded with the oldest ancient oak on the estate, thought to be over 800 years old, which was shortlisted for Tree of the Year in 2025.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a great day. Also, a massive thank you to Matt Molesdale for leading the walk and the Bradgate Park Trust for hosting the event. And finally, a big, big thank you to local group volunteers Callum Throw and Katie Erin Lewis for all your help and support with the group; these walks wouldn't be possible without all your help.

This is the final field visit of 2026 for the local group, but we will return next year with four amazing ancient tree sites, which are something special. Thank you once again to Greg williamson and the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for hosting our other events this year. Hope to see you at one of our events in 2027 🌳💚

Fantastic day leading the @atfwmworcestershire West Midlands and Worcestershire groups 2nd field visit of 2026 to Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.

The walk took in the woodland pasture and the Ent tree within Brocton Coppice, which is home to some magnificent ancient and veteran oaks, likely remnants of the Chase forest, a royal hunting ground for Henry VIII. We had some great discussions on halo thinning, soil compaction, and managing visitor pressure around these fragile trees.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a great day. Also a massive thank Greg williamson for leading the walk and the National Trust for hosting the event. And finally, a big, big thank you to local group volunteers @arbinnovators and Katie Erin Lewis for your continued help and support with the group.

Hope to see some of you at our next field visit on the 3rd September at Bradgate Park 🌳

Yesterday the Ancient Tree Forum held a local group get together at Blenheim Place in Oxfordshire. As part of the day, I was privileged to be asked to give a talk on the work I've been doing with Bangor University and Jack Walmsley at Gwynedd Council in putting together a management plan to protect and preserve the ancient apple trees of Aber Falls.

We had several other talks throughout the morning on crown architecture, crown morphophysiology, and the walking willows of the Fens. In the afternoon, we were privileged to be given a guided tour of the SSSI woodland in High Park, which contains some of the best examples of ancient and veteran Oaks in the country, including the mighty King and Queen Oaks. Of which over 60 of these ancient trees are thought to date back to medieval times.

It was a fantastic day, and I would like to say a big thanks to James Chambers for organising the event and for your fantastic talk, and also to Kenny McGregor and Russell Miller for your brilliant talks. Also, a huge thank you to Blenheim Place for hosting the event and to Francis and Felipe for guiding the walk and passing on your wealth of knowledge; it was great to see the fantastic work you're doing in High Park.

It's a day I'll never forget, and it's always great to share it with like minded ancient tree enthusiasts 🌳 🫶#ancienttrees #blenheimpalace

What a lovely morning and afternoon with Lance at @bhambotanicalgardens on a guided tour. If you haven't visited these gardens, we highly recommend, as there are plenty of champion trees here - the biggest, the oldest, the rarest, or just generally the best of their species. Big thanks to our sponsors @barchamtreesplc for supporting us. Scroll along for some beautiful sunny photos of the greenery.

On 3rd September, the ANCIENT TREE FORUM West Midlands & Worcestershire local group would like to welcome you to our third walk of 2026, exploring some wonderful ancient and veteran trees at Bradgate Park, Leicestershire.

The parkland spans 830 acres and has been designated a deer park for over 800 years. The first written reference to the deer park at Bradgate dates back to 1241, which supports the presence of both Red and Fallow deer, with a herd size of around 550 animals, of which three-quarters are Fallow deer.

Bradgate is also famous as the birthplace of the “Nine Days Queen,” Lady Jane Grey. The park features 16th-century Tudor ruins, as well as the iconic 18th-century “Old John” tower, which was gifted to the public in 1928. The park is also famous for its geology and contains some of the oldest exposed fossils in England, with rock formations dating back to the Precambrian period.

The parkland boasts a renowned collection of ancient, veteran oak trees, many exceeding 500 years in age. These hollowed, gnarled trees are thought to be over 500 years old, with one ancient oak thought to be over 800 years old, which was shortlisted for Tree of the Year in 2025. The walk will last approximately 4 hours and will start in the Newtown Linford car park. The route will head straight into the Deer Sanctuary, with many ancient trees, where the deer herd can be viewed, and their impacts will be considered.

The afternoon will see the walk head up to ‘Hell Hole’, an extensive cluster of ancient oak and sweet chestnut, where more tree management discussion with target pruning and propping will be on the agenda. We will culminate with a stop-off at the oldest oak (830 years) within Bowling Green Spinney.

Tickets can be booked via the Ancient Tree Forum website. 🌳 #ancienttrees #bradgatepark #ancienttreeforum

On the 1st August, the Ancient Tree Forum West Midlands & Worcestershire local group would like to welcome you to our second walk of 2026 to explore some wonderful ancient and veteran trees at Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire.

The hall is situated on the edge of Cannock Chase. The estate was owned by the Bishops of Lichfield until the dissolution of the monasteries, upon which it passed through several hands before being purchased in 1624 by William Anson, a local lawyer and ancestor of the Earls of Lichfield. The estate remained in the Anson family for three centuries. Following the death of the 4th Earl of Lichfield in 1960, the estate was allocated to the National Trust instead of death duties, and then immediately leased to Staffordshire County Council. Management of the estate was returned to the National Trust in 2016.

Shugborough Hall and woodland pasture are home to some magnificent ancient and veteran oaks, which are likely remnants of the Chase forest, which was a royal hunting ground for Henry VIII. The walk will last approximately 4 hours and will start in the main car park. We will walk from the main car park through part of the estate into the woodland pasture which borders Brocton Coppice. We will be stopping for a short lunch break, and if we have time, we will be venturing into the coppice to visit the ‘’Ent Tree’’ and then returning to the estate to conclude the walk.

Tickets can be booked through the Ancient Tree Forum website.

Teaching people about trees using VR headsets. I met Callum years ago through tiktok and our scanning passion. Always great to catch up and hear what is working on.

I like talking to the subject matter experts whilst doing a scan it’s like doing an on-site Podcast it goes a little bit like this….

Maybe it’ll be my new series

Thanks to Callum Throw for the intel!
