Hey IG Family! 🚀
My name is ARCHANGEL, and this is MY Inner Jukebox - a new weekly REEL series I'll be sharing to release hidden gems that are special to me... to the world.

Number Twelve: "Relax Max" by Dinah Washington (1956). Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong were the first jazz musicians I listened to, but Dinah Washington was up next. I first heard this song in 2007 on a commercial for DoubleTree Hotels, and it hasn't left my playlists since.🌙🤌🏾

Number Eleven: "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" by Christopher Cross. Not the deepest of cuts by any means as it is a number one song, but my soft spot for easy listening stems from songs like this and others from Carole King, Billy Joel, Peabo Bryson, Amy Grant, Bonnie Raitt, Sade, Norah Jones, and the late Whitney Houston's debut album. I think of this chorus every single time I fly at night and touch down to a wide cityscape of neon lights. 🌙🤌🏾

Number Ten: "Genius" by Julia Fordham from her 1989 "Porcelain" album. A hidden gem of the TRUEST sense, I heard this song almost every day for an entire YEAR at a previous job when on hold during discussions with our credit card department. By that last day, I knew all the words, the background vocal parts, and even most of the animal noises 😆🤣😂. A special record. (If I ever own an upscale hotel, trust and believe this will be on my lobby playlist.)

Number Nine: "I'm Done" by Tweet. I had to show love to one of the most beautiful vocal tones in music history. 🤌🏾 As clear as a church bell, and just as beautiful. When I heard her trademark backgrounds in Solange's "Weary" off of her 2016 project "A Seat At The Table," I almost jumped out of my bed. I was ecstatic. Some artists create a serene aura in every room their voice enters, and Ms. Charlene Keys is one of them. (Another choice Tweet deep cut: "I Admit It")

Number Eight: "Every Moment" by Forever Jones. God had a funny way of introducing me to new songs as a young, high-school Christian: right before tests and exams. 😌 After my studying was complete, I would try to save 30 minutes and grab the nearest headphones, heading to YouTube for some last-minute comfort/reassurance before each test I wrote. I would search for the ONE song I felt I needed, and the "related videos" algorithm would do the rest. "I Shall Live And Not Die" (Darlene McCoy), "Praise Him In Advance" (Marvin Sapp), "What's Coming Is Better (Deon Kipping), "All To Thee" (Tamela Mann), and "Nobody Greater" (VaShawn Mitchell) all have similar discovery stories in my life, and make up the high-school foundation of my Gospel playlists. These days, I can't hear these records on Sirius XM Praise without giving thanks to God for all of those test and exam outcomes that got me to where I am today. 🙏🏾🚀🎯

My name is ARCHANGEL, and this is MY Inner Jukebox - a new weekly REEL series I'll be sharing to release hidden gems and deep cuts that are special to me... to the world.

Number Seven: "Make It Hot" by JDiggz. It was 2007/08, and I became HOOKED on The Neptunes through "Spaz" by Pharrell's group N.E.R.D. This music video played on MuchMusic right after that one, and the rest is history. The beat was RELENTLESS ...., and then I found out about "Gimme Dat". 👀🔥 Another BANGER. When I did my research and found out he was Guyanese too? 🤌🏾🇬🇾 Sold. My Jamaican-Canadian identity was already taken care of thanks to Jully Black and Kreesha Turner... but my Guyanese-Canadian side definitely needed some representation too.

Many believe that Drake or The Weeknd was the beginning of Canadian R&B/Hip-Hop music, but I reflect PROUDLY on this era of Keshia Chanté, Trio, JDiggz, Kreesha Turner, K-os, and George Nozuka. The nexus of these genres was in good hands, and provided the firm foundation / fertile ground for Drake & Co to blossom.

Number Six: "Time Is" by Solange.
If 2016s "A Seat At The Table" project suddenly materialized to assist capsizing boats in desperate need of rescue amidst societal waters fraught with chaos and confusion, 2019s "When I Get Home" is the conclusion to the story: ships rocking gently from side-to-side, able to withstand and navigate any storm.

I really hope we can purchase CDs of both projects one day, as I have slots in my "Best Of All Time" CD rack waiting for them.

Number Five: "Seconds" by Ghost Loft. This song is a film or TV commercial soundtrack curators' dream: slightly dark, moody, electronic, and sounds like a night out with friends in a cosmopolitan city. Lincoln, Audi, H&M, Showtime, HBO, and the opening sequence of Big-budget rom-coms set in LA/NYC/Paris better scoop this one up. (Also love the subtle nod to Destiny's Child "Say My Name")

Number Four: "Somedays" by JackSOUL. As crazy as this may seem, I thank God frequently for the era of music I was born in. Not only did I musically come of age (5-6ish, when you can form basic opinions about music) to see the Whitneys and Michaels stop by one last time in their dominant eras and leave their indelible mark, but I was able to see Usher, Destiny's Child, and Aaliyah bloom in a landscape recently taken over by The Backstreet Boys, Britney, and Christina Aguilera. That 1999-2004 era was truly something for the books! Every genre had multiple stars duking it out in a weekly brawl on the charts, and labels had BUDGETS.

It was also a special experience to be a Canadian radio music listener at the time, as the US and Canadian music charts still had a lot of separation. JackSOUL, Remy Shand, Sugar Jones, Keshia Chante, Wave, Prozzäk, Tal Bachman, and a pre-Timbaland Nelly Furtado owned the radio alongside our neighbors from the South.

The chorus of this song, undoubtedly my radio soundtrack for first grade, came back to me almost 10 years later (word-for-word) in a dream. RIP, lead vocalist Haydain Neale.
