Chapter 8: It NEVER Gave Dead.

How crazy is it that I chose a school with 6 churches in a 5 minute walk? How also crazy is it that the church I called home for the past year was literally a 1-minute walk from my apartment?

All of us depend on the gift of discernment when entering a new place, and feeling out the space based on the energy and how COMFORTABLE you feel. I knew this was the place from the first time I stepped in. Thank you, WABC, for being my church home away from home! Those messages from Dr. Marcus Cosby kept me FED.... and that CHOIR. 🔥🔥👀

Chapter 6: A Royal Coronation

On a rainy, humid day in HTX (conveniently 4/4, a lucky number of mine), I checked something off my bucket list: Attending a concert SOLO-DOLO. Not only did I have an amazing time, but the people I met and hung out with were TOP-TIER. It's like all of the church choir kids snuck out from home and got together to sing at a secular concert w/ Bourbon & Hennessy in hand. 😂 Found my new HTX wing spot from their connects too!

Jazmine Sullivan. Where do I begin? What are the CHANCES that this would be the first tour stop after she won her first two Grammys the night before? After being nominated more than a dozen times in the past, this crowd was the GAS and oxygen she needed.

Post 8: "So I did a thing last night.", she said coyly, before beaming one of those megawatt, "FINALLY." smiles. The crowd bellowed back in celebration for the next two hours and some change, and reciprocated her energy.🔥

It was an honor to be at the overdue coronation of one of the best songwriters and vocalists of our generation. HANDS DOWN. WE knew it, but it took the Recording Academy a little more time to come around. Newly-crowned R&B greatness. Opening-act Maeta and the pre-show DJ were stellar too.

Lyft Driver? 12/10. An older Ethiopian man with 4 children: 1 in Med School, 1 in Law School, and 2 Engineering Grads! The way his countenance LIT UP when talking about those children made me so proud of them! #BlackExcellence Sending good vibes through the ether to that father and his wife who not only sacrificed so much, but were able to see the fruits of their labor and teachings. 🙌🏽

Day 3: "Where Is The Love" by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, a CLASSIC. It was covered by R&B phenoms Chloe x Halle at the Grammys last year, and I loved their unique cover so much I made 3 voicenotes (1 for each harmony) and stacked them above each other using BandLab.

If you ever see me driving by myself around the city...... I'm probably singing in the car and I have ZERO shame. 😂😂 I also host jam-sessions at stoplights. ✌ It's probably the best remedy to a traffic jam you have no control over.

This is "They Could Be Wrong × Au Cinema" by Lianne La Havas. (Dear Lianne, if you need someone to do snaps and claps in the studio.... I'm your guy. 😊)

🎄 Singing In The Car: Chapter 2 🎄
.
.

1) Say what you want about the show Nashville.... but that entire cast can SING. ✌ This is me harmonizing along to "A Life That's Good" (A song about being thankful for what you have ~ really fitting for Christmas season going into a new year) by Lennon & Maisy Stella, who are pure MAGIC when they perform together. 🎆
.
.
2) Literally a top 5 ALL-TIME favourite song. I added some vinyl scratches so my acapella cover sounded a bit more legit.... but here is "A Foggy Day" by Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald. 🎆🙏🏾

Good afternoon IG!

A silver lining of our current quarantine situation is the possibility of going back through the discographies of artists you admire and FINALLY getting a chance to hear projects fully that you missed out on (some due to exams, and others that got lost in the sauce amidst new music). Please swipe to see 4* album reviews of amazing projects (and 1 full catalog scan because their run of singles has been so flawless) for 5 artists that I didn't get a chance to fully appreciate.... until now.

Blessings!

(4/12) I been on, I been on, I BEEN on.
Tell me who gon' take me off? - Beyonce 👑🐝 Dropped into Beyonce's city for a night this summer and had some BOMB TEXAS BBQ. ✌🏽💣💣🍖🥃 Tyler, The Creator isn't even from Houston, but the beat switch-up/outro in "Glitter" (a record from his last album) is STRAIGHT UP HOUSTON. In headphones, you'll hear quintessential chopped and screwed vocals, autotune, and layers of BASS + harmonized vocal samples. 🖼 A TRUE work of art I blasted through the summer (........on my way to school 😳📚📚😱).
