📣The Public Life of Home - Architectures of Belonging - launching the provocation for the Architecture Fringe Festival 2027! 🥳

What makes a home?
Home is often imagined as the most private of spaces, a retreat from public life, a shelter, and a place to rest. It’s a place of connection, too - of meaning, of lore; somewhere to return to, and somewhere to belong.

Where and how we live has always been shaped by climate, culture, and circumstance. Today, who gets to live where depends on a great many things, and the architectures of belonging are as varied and diverse as we are. Across the world this most fundamental of our needs faces challenges in supply, affordability, access, tenure, design and conviviality, affecting villages, towns and cities in every continent.

At heart, The Public Life of Home asks what architecture might become if its starting point was not the production of property, but the building of belonging?

We hope you’ll join us🧡

The Architecture Fringe Festival 2027 will take place 04-20 June 2027 across Scotland. Our Open Call is now open! and closes for confirmed submissions on 06 April 2027 🥳🌈

📣 Applications for Summer School 2026 now open! 📣

Hospitalfield, 12-17 July, 2026

Head to the link in bio, to apply for this exciting new project from Architecture Fringe… applications close 24.05.26

Taking place @hospitalfield from 12-17 July 2026, *Earth Station* will be led by Marf Summers, Becky Little (Rebearth), Soph Dyer and Alison Scott, Akiko Kobayashi and Ben Williams.

In order to meet the demands of our rapidly changing environments it is clear that architects and designers need to work increasingly collaboratively, experimentally and compassionately. A new space of education and exchange, *Summer Assembly: Earth Station* is a test bed for such practice. One that asks how, through intentionally coming together across disciplines, sharing ideas and experience, we can map out alternative and hopeful futures.

The school is open to 40 participants, and we encourage applications from across a range of different backgrounds and previous experiences. There are 8 supported places (free) for people who would not otherwise be able to take part due to financial or other barriers to access. A number of these places are kindly supported by @scotecodesign @riasmembership and @vadundee 🙏

Visit link in bio to find out more. 🌿

👀🎥From The Archive - Big Lecture: Peter Barber

Architect Peter Barber @peterbarber12 joined us in 2019 to reflect on his work and practice in relation to the provocation for that year’s Architecture Fringe, In Real Life, [IRL].

Filmed at The Fruitmarket Gallery @fruitmarketgallery, Edinburgh, Scotland on Friday 21st June 2019 in front of a sold-out audience, Peter is one of the UK’s leading contemporary urbanists with an award-winning practice based in King’s Cross, central London.

Established in 1989 Peter Barber Architects is renowned for high-quality, high-density housing with numerous ground-breaking mixed-use and residential schemes, planning studies and individual buildings across the UK. The practice’s varied portfolio of work is underpinned by a consistent commitment to radical solutions and excellence in design. Peter’s central approach to work is that architecture can create the potential for social action and activity; that we are shaped by the space that surrounds us and in turn that space is conditioned by society and wider culture.

Watch or listen to Peter’s lecture and following conversation with Akiko Kobayashi within the News section via our bio 🧡

Join us at the SEDA Conference 2026: Common Ground in September - for a Prefiguritive Practice Workshop with @scott.mcaulay

Scott McAulay is a Regenerative Designer, Facilitator and Strategist, an architectural worker, and has spent the last decade extending the horizons of sustainability in architecture through activism, cultural production, non-traditional education and sustainable practice.

They honed their practice through the Anthropocene Architecture School (2019-2025), a self-sustained un/learning project that fused architectural, community, and political education with explorations of Climate Literacy, Agency, Spatial Justice, and the Radical Imagination. Scott’s work prefiguratively challenges, and creates spaces from which we can collectively imagine beyond, today’s cultures of inertia towards climate action and housing justice through temporary educational activations of space - connecting, welcoming and supporting groups outwith the construction sector, and has involved contributing to >150 events internationally.

Scott is a Co-Producer with the @archifringe a member of Fuel Poverty Action and @living_rent and they have taught widely across Scotland, the British Isles, mainland Europe and Turtle Island, were a co-creator of Retrofit Reimagined 2023, and contributed to the open-access anthology The Pedagogies of Reuse: The International School of Re-Construction. They are in the @circularartsnet first Circulations cohort and is studying towards a Permaculture Design Certificate with the @propagate.scotland 2026 Glasgow cohort.

Book your place at the link in our bio to join for 1 - 3 days at the @falklandestate in Fife for SEDA Conference 2026: Common Ground 18th - 20th September 💭🌿

Portraits from an amazing week at @archifringe Earth Station summer school up in @hospitalfield in Arbroath.

Hard to put this incredible week into words, but for now here are portraits recording the incredible work of participants in my “Stone Circle” learning leatherwork, symbolic tool making, and costume making all in a few days.

Participants costumes and ceremonial tools use a mix of natural materials from the grounds and other groups (mud to create masks, reeds from the thatching group), in combination with waste man-made materials. Inspirations took in ideas including pigeons, satellite dish as ceremonial flag pole, the intimacy of late night conversations, thatching, angels, Pictish stones, monk habits, rats, clay brick making, unicorns (possibly two depicted in the Pictish stones we visited), and the declaration of Arbroath to name a few!

Portraits by me @marfsummers apart from those of the mysterious man with the locally sourced rook feather beard - those are by @__m_eh_ by @archifringe

Last week we had the pleasure of joining @archifringe in Arbroath at Hospitalfields for their ‘Architectures of Land and Learning’ event.

It was a fantastic evening of inspiring talks from Dr Mairi McFadyen, Sara Almodovar Pereira, Hannah Lu & Garance Maurer, exploring architecture, collective action, & ecology. All brilliant speakers from a range of backgrounds.

In addition to the great talks we had time to roam around the lovely gardens and even catch a peak at some of the work Archifringe’s Summer Assembly have been creating - can you tell we loved the thatch!! 😋

As an organisation, we’ve been particularly proud to sponsor this year’s Summer School and cant wait to see what future years bring.
