On World Cities Day, we reflect on architecture’s role in transforming urban landscapes, from creating integrated neighbourhoods and sustainable public spaces to establishing new identities for growing cities.

Drawing on projects such as DLF City in Gurugram and the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal, our Senior Principal Architects share their perspectives on how architecture can shape urban development beyond the scale of individual buildings.

At Godrej Royale Woods, Devanahalli, the inherited landscape shaped the master plan and design strategy. The original fruit and rain trees at the heart of the site led to a perimeter-block layout that preserves the natural landscape as the development’s defining feature.

Ten themed gardens, eight fruit orchards, and over 1,000 trees form a green network of wooded spaces, meandering paths, and a tree-lined boulevard. At its centre, a forest-themed clubhouse anchors the development and shared spaces. A restrained grey-and-white architectural palette was chosen for the architecture to keep the built form in harmony with its natural setting.

The development also includes a dedicated senior living tower with corresponding amenities.

Set against the historic St. Thomas Church, now home to the Diu Museum, the new central plaza for the complex is designed as a public space that connects the site’s rich heritage with contemporary civic life.

Inspired by Portuguese squares, the plaza is designed to accommodate community gatherings, cultural performances, exhibitions, and daily encounters. Its geometry of concentric patterns creates a distinct pattern and marks an axis of focal points that directs the eye to the ceremonial entry to the church.

The surrounding tropical landscape features canopy trees, flowering plants, and layered gardens, providing a refreshing, green setting. Shaded walkways and accessible ramps connect the central court and the landscape, making the plaza welcoming to people of all ages and abilities.

The proposed BITS Pilani Vistaar Academic Complex reinterprets classical Rajasthani architectural vocabulary through a contemporary lens.

A central pavilion anchors the composition, complemented by colonnaded verandahs, pointed arches, intricate jali screens, and shaded courtyards. A grand ceremonial forecourt establishes a strong institutional presence, while landscaped open spaces and climate-responsive planning shape the relationship between built form and its setting.

Developed in phases to accommodate the institution’s growing needs, the design brings together heritage, innovation, and student life.

At the studio, working on projects across scales and typologies gives young architects exposure to the many dimensions of professional practice. Our interns share their insights on what it means to begin their career in a large, multidisciplinary firm.

From contributing to large-scale projects to coordinating with teams across design, consultants, and execution, interns learn how ideas move beyond drawings into the realities of building. They gain insight into the complexity of architectural practice, the importance of clear communication, and the responsibility that comes with real-world design decisions.

At 393 metres, 23 Marina was once the world's tallest residential building when it was completed in 2012. The luxury residential tower sits at the gateway of Dubai Marina, offering residents panoramic views of the city and the sea.

The design initially featured an elliptical geometry that was reworked into an octagonal plan to better respond to vortex wind forces and improve seismic stability, key considerations for Dubai’s coastal conditions.

The tower's façade is clad in aluminium and blue-tinted glazing, with prominent triangular balconies that define its vertical rhythm. A sculpted spire and canopied terraces further define the tower’s distinct silhouette, while a six-storey-tall entrance lobby replicates the same grandeur on arrival.

The upcoming residential project, Lodha Azur in Bengaluru, overlooks the 120-acre Lake Hulimavu and draws design cues from the site’s natural setting and the enduring language of classical architecture. The masterplan is organised around landscaped gardens, lake views, and pedestrian connections that extend the landscape experience through the development.

Elements inspired by classical Greek architecture lend the development a timeless, old-world character. A grand colonnaded verandah frames the social spaces like the clubhouse, pool, and gardens, while deep verandahs, up to 8 ft adjoining the residences, create shaded living spaces oriented towards the lake or gardens.

Completed in 1996, Damania Residence is an early residential project whose design is a contemporary translation of climate-responsive architecture.

Located in the arid expanse of Ahmednagar, the design responds to the region’s hot, dry climate, featuring locally quarried stone that forms thick external walls, while partly barrel-vaulted roofs shelter the bedrooms, kitchen, and dining areas. The material palette and vaults provide thermal comfort in fluctuating temperatures and lend the home a distinct architectural character.

The plan is organised around a strong radial geometry with a central living space at its heart, its volume further emphasised by a skylight. A free-form pool between the bedroom wings softens the geometry, integrating the built form with the surrounding landscape.

Every year, the practice welcomes new interns into a professional ecosystem working across diverse typologies, scales, clients, and contexts. Here, projects move beyond drawings and concepts, exposing young architects to the realities of design, coordination, construction, and the many disciplines that shape a final outcome.

In the latest edition of our newsletter, we speak to our interns and their teams about this transition, exploring how practice expands their understanding of architecture and the distance between theory and reality.

Across India’s rapidly densifying cities, Development Control Regulations (DCR) form the invisible framework within which every project operates. They shape not only how much we build, but how cities grow and adapt.

The execution of Minerva Tower, one of India’s tallest residential buildings, spanned 16 years and was anything but straightforward. Mid-construction, Mumbai's DCR was updated, effectively changing FSI rules and forcing a fundamental redesign from Level 51 upward.

Senior Principal Karl Wadia, Associate Chaitalee Patadia, and Senior Associate Ali Hyder Shaikh sit down in the latest episode of our podcast series to share how the team responded to new regulations with agility and adapted Minerva’s design while preserving its original intent.
