Architensions (@architensions) has been selected to @archrecordmag’s 2024 Design Vanguard. “The award program recognizes 10 leading young firms and individuals who represent the promise of the next generation of architects.”

Ian Volner writes in RECORD “...the duo have demonstrated a consistent willingness to upend conventions, looking to social principles without sacrificing form-making to create something altogether unexpected. It’s an approach that flows from what is still, by Roseboro’s account, a remarkably fluid collaboration: ‘We joke that, actually, there’s no tension at Architensions.‘“

This idea of collectivity couldn’t be more evident than in their ongoing San Ferdinando Masterplan project. Volner continues: “But public space, and public works, remain at the top of Architensions’ agenda—and their capacity to tackle such projects on a large scale is currently being tested by the pair’s so-called “vision plan” for San Ferdinando, a small community in the Calabria region of Orsini’s native Italy…when the town’s mayor invited the designers in 2021 to organize an urban-design workshop with residents, they were immediately intrigued, seeing an opportunity to put their thinking about the built environment and collective living into practice. In an ongoing experiment, the townspeople have participated, alongside the architects, in reimagining San Ferdinando’s daily existence, creating schemes for everything from public plazas to gardens with the aim of ‘constructing a new social fabric,’ as Orsini puts it. For Architensions, it’s just the kind of ground-up, civic-minded enterprise that the partners are most eager to pursue, and that they seem to be finding more and more of as their office evolves.“

For this Neo-Grec Brooklyn brownstone, built circa 1878, @architensions approached renovation as a process of subtraction, removing non-historic alterations that had obscured the building’s original proportions and ornamental clarity. On the facade, the architects restored masonry details, introduced new high-performance windows, and reinstated the threshold between stoop and street via a custom-fabricated iron fence, modeled on archival references and neighborhood precedents.

“This was a project where we tried to preserve most of the existing materials and ornamentation as a design method,” explains Architensions co-principal Alessandro Orsini (@orsiniale).

Inside, the project reconsiders the spatial organization to align with contemporary modes of living. Existing skylights were retained and enhanced to draw daylight deep into the plan, while selective removal of interior partitions allows for a more fluid sequence of spaces across the parlor and upper floors, counteracting the inherent narrowness of the brownstone typology. Rather than neutralizing the interiors, the design celebrates the original ceiling moldings and woodwork, restoring them as a richly textured backdrop, set against a contemporary material palette of terrazzo, soft pastel ceramics, and continuous white oak flooring.

“The interior of a landmark brownstone always tells a story,” adds Architensions co-principal Nick Roseboro (@nickroseboro). “We wanted to add to its story integrating original and new elements which build on its character.”

We are honored that Fragments of Disability Fictions has been acquired for the permanent collection of SFMOMA @sfmoma , as part of a larger group of works that includes pieces by artists and thinkers we admire.
Fragments of Disability Fictions explores speculative scenarios drawn from past, present, and imagined future disabled lives in New York City. The project imagines worlds in which disabled cultures take shape and flourish—while also revealing their struggles, negotiations, forms of resistance, and ongoing fights for recognition and space.
The project was originally developed for the Chicago Cultural Center as part of the @chicagoarchitecturebiennial , curated by Artistic Director @flor_ness and @kommerswender ,the project was made possible through the generous support of Florencia and the entire CAB team.
Project by @nachoglezgalan @davidgissen and @architensions (@nickroseboro @orsiniale ) with the guidance of a group of disabled scholars, activists, and policy makers including Neta Alexander, Victor Calise, David Serlin, and Eman Rimawi-Doster @the_eman_meow_rimawi_show
Special thanks to SF MoMA curators Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher @jdunlopfletcher , Joseph Becker, Daryl McCurdy, and Ann Marguerite Tartsinis for their support and engagement with the work.

WIP, Educational Campus, San Ferdinando, Italy, 2025-. The urban form of the new educational center B.TE.C. Business & Technology Campus for the Fondazione Mask @fondazionemaskitsacademy in San Ferdinando conceives the building as an element that connects to the city’s public space through a central courtyard scheme, which acts as a unifying feature between the functions of the educational complex, the outdoor areas, and the public realm. The courtyard becomes an inhabited surface throughout the entire school year, while also serving as a focal point for the community, which can use the spaces during the time not directly dedicated to teaching activities. The result is a building that does not impose itself on the surrounding city, but instead appears light, opening up as a democratic condenser of diverse functions where both citizens and students are invited to interact.

Corner House, Far Rockaway, New York, 2026. A recently completed renovation of a project that began as a horizontal extension. The final project reused and transformed the existing house into an open space for a single family, with the top two floors reserved for private apartments. Clad in black slats, the opening reflects the interior programmatic need for light and privacy. The porch and the garden are designed as an extension of the interior spaces. 1. North Façade, 2. Museum as New Publics: Our proposal for the MAC Panamá @mac_panama repositions the museum, not as an isolated cultural container but, as an active civic infrastructure grounded in its context. The building adopts a low, terraced configuration that opens itself horizontally to the city, establishing continuity between ground, roof, and public realm. The museum is articulated into a tripartite geometry: the plinth clad in precast red concrete panels, a four-story building, and a two-story building, both clad in pre-fabricated terracotta fluted panels. The structure is a hybrid of simple glulam timber beams and columns supporting a cross-laminated timber floor topped with a thin layer of concrete. The exterior plaza incorporates a range of comfort strategies designed to enhance visitor experience year-round. Building massing is oriented to capture prevailing northeasterly winds, and shaded walkways and overhangs at entrances soften transitions to and from the museum. Terracotta panels with evaporative cooling—where water is drip-fed onto moisture-retaining tiles—improve comfort at exterior walkways, including the stairs. #architensions #macpanamá

The new slowly overtakes the old in House on House, Architensions’ (@architensions) striking transformation of a compact suburban home in Babylon, New York. Informed by extensive research into the cultural history and architectural taxonomy of the surrounding neighborhood, the project subverts the American single-family suburban typology, which fosters the isolation and introversion of the nuclear family, rather than community.

“We wanted to ‘hack’ the typology of the American suburban single-family home, which is so influenced by the Cult of Domesticity,” explains Architensions co-principal Alessandro Orsini (@orsiniale). “The house is historically the place for defining the individual and the individualization of society,” adds Architensions co-principal Nick Roseboro (@nickroseboro) in a 2023 interview with Valerio Franzone (@v.franzone) for @koozarch. “Housing related to capitalism thrives on individualization but excludes the collectivization of social interactions and exchange.”

Architensions began by producing a taxonomy of architectural elements (windows, porches, roofs, additions) typical of suburban houses in the neighborhood—which they would then “hack” and remix on the home’s new volume. Elements that reinforce seclusion were eschewed for those that foster communal life. A semi-circular terrace extends from the second-floor bedroom and faces the street, creating a new connection to the neighborhood. The primary bedroom features a communal sink, rejecting the traditional single-family separation of bed and bath.

“House on House is an exercise in ideas and styles, applied to the heart of sleepy suburbia, the disturbing bridgehead of contemporary architecture culture in a land yet to be conquered,” writes Alessandro Bennetti in the April 2022 issue of @domusweb.

📖 Read the full interview in KoozArch for more on Architensions’ work and their ongoing exploration of housing as a site for collectivity. (🔗in bio) The project was also featured in Domus, @wallpapermag, @detailmagazine, @dezeen, and others.
