The League been busy this year! To help share the scope of our meaningful work, the League has published a complete record of the League’s activities from 2025–2026—including a look at those who’ve made this work possible.

The 86-page report provides a bird’s-eye view of League programs and presentations, from special events at MADE Bush Terminal and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, to archival research and publications, to lectures, panels, and site and studio tours held in New York and across the country.

The report also spotlights the incredible cohort of design and built environment leaders that help our community grow across disciplines, mediums, geographies, and design focuses.

Established by the New York State Legislature in 1988 as a public-benefit corporation, the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) is responsible for designing and constructing New York City’s public schools. Across its 13 departments, the SCA manages the New York City Public Schools Capital Plan and oversees real estate, budgeting, scoping, and the design, construction, and renovation of projects throughout more than 1,400 school buildings in all five boroughs. Framing schools as “vital community landmarks… hubs of connection, safety, and growth” in its mission statement, the SCA has delivered more than 333,000 new school seats citywide since its creation.

The host of the evening, the SCA’s Department of Architecture & Engineering, which includes the In-House Design Studio, Design Consultant Management Studio, and Operations and Small Business Consulting Unit, develops scope, design, and construction documents for capital improvement projects and provides construction administration services.

In 2019, students from the University of the South Pacific formed Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change (@pisfcc) and launched a campaign seeking an advisory opinion on climate change from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Inspired by this, youth from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe organized World’s Youth for Climate Justice (@wy4cj), aiming to secure state support for the initiative in their respective regions. And in 2021, the Government of Vanuatu began a diplomatic process to build support among nations for a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution, which was adopted by consensus on March 29, 2023.

In response, in July 2025, the ICJ delivered its landmark advisory opinion on the obligations of states in respect of climate change, clarifying, under international law, the legal obligations of states to protect the climate system as well as the legal consequences should states breach those obligations.

Following the advocacy of @pisfcc and @wy4cj and the 2026 UNGA resolution backing the ICJ advisory opinion, and with the clarification of states’ legal obligations regarding climate change, built environment professionals have a significant role in helping to shape the implementation of international climate law, in practice and policy.

At the League’s Architecture, Planning, and International Law: Building Postcarbon Futures, built environment and climate policy experts Billy Fleming (@joobilly), Daniel Aldana Cohen (@aldagrams), Keller Easterling (@kellereasterling), and Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò will spotlight model projects around the world and draw a roadmap for the future of our cities, landscapes, and communities that advances compliance with international climate law in accordance with the ICJ’s findings.
