This year’s New City Critics were given special access to sites across the city as part of @openhousenewyork weekend. Fellows visited a converted office building, a contemporary funeral home, and stations along the future IBX corridor, among other places in New York. These sites will serve as the subjects of their first published pieces, which launch at an in-person event on Tuesday, December 15, 6–8:30pm. Save the date!

As a new Business Improvement District (BID) comes to East Harlem, practices once sustained through informal systems begin to be translated into budgets, bylaws, and governance structures — the latter shaped largely by property ownership.

Uptown Grand Central (@uptowngrandcentral), a nonprofit that has long navigated bureaucratic inconsistency and funding insecurity to promote culture and safety along a portion of 125th Street for over ten years, led the drive to establish the East Harlem 125th Street BID. Working with UGC as part of a study on barriers to public space programming, Pedro Cruz Cruz (@_pedcruz) asks if the BID will bring stability and support to the neighborhood’s placekeepers, or spell the end of community stewardship and power.

It’s the year 2044 and it’s time we learned “the true meaning of solidarity”: this is the proposition of the students and educators of many stripes who contributed to the New York 2044 Education Issue, the fourth round of artist @n_o_a_h_fischer’s ongoing speculative journalism project. Here, urban infrastructures are transformed by crisis and ingenuity in three stories pulled from a newspaper of the future.

Last week, our New City Critics went on their first outing together: a tour of the French department store Printemps with Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic Alexandra Lange (@langealexandra). Lange highlighted the storied history of One Wall Street, and within that context asked our critics to consider the markings of a successful contemporary department store. What are the spatial attributes that make you want to buy something?

Following their visit, with Lange’s guidance, the New City Critics will be writing about what aspects of a space make them want to shop. Get to know the critics — and keep an eye out for their forthcoming writings on place — at the link in our bio.

Seeing each unique opportunity as a unique responsibility has been a mantra for Jacob Moore (@jacobrmoore) since the beginning of his career. Today, he brings this outlook to his role as the Executive Director of The Architectural League of New York (@archleague) where he oversees all programmatic, financial, and administrative functions of the 145-year-old organization.

Prior to his time at the League, Moore spent more than a decade in multiple roles at Columbia University’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture. He has been an independent critic and curator, helping to found The Avery Review and editing at Princeton Architectural Press. He grew up in Franklin, Tennessee before moving to New York to study architecture.

In his interview with Julia Gamolina (@julia.gamolina) for our #ExpandingtheConversation column, Jacob talks about active support in leadership, lessons learned from his time in the service industry, and trusting your instincts.

FSD.TEMP Takeover: Photo dump of the past year working on Hyper Local Robotic Enanglements. We are so grateful for the funding opportunity to work on such a big idea. Deep thanks to everyone involved, @archleague and @capregionartscenter for grant funding, NATURElab @mediasanctuary for two beautiful fall days in the garden and backyard, and all of the community members who participated.

Hyper-Local Robotic Entanglements (HLRE) is a research project that merges modern emerging technologies with ancient earthen building materials in ways that respond to and collaborate with our existing environment, enabling a site responsive and more cost-effective building process than previously explored in robotics-enabled construction-scale building. This trans-disciplinary project is both a series of participatory activations and a research project, exploring community-accessible manufacturing technology using hyper local materials.

Output: Backyard-bot is a custom robotic system that moves within a tensioned cable gantry system. This version has a gripper attached for the movement & precise arrangement of building components like earthen bricks. The lightweight cable gantry frame allows for installation between temporary tieback points and adapts to uneven ground through sensor feedback and computational path refinement.

This iteration of HLRE includes 2 public workshops sited at NATURE Lab in North-Central Troy, NY, a public repository of open-source files (link in bio), and a zine series.

Hyper-Local Robotic Entanglements is a project led by FSD.TEMP that explores the design and implementation of a DIY backyard robot to build with natural materials gathered from local sources. HLRE explores how to encourage the tangibility of emerging technologies through public engagement and physical artifacts.
