Against the backdrop of increasing destruction caused by armed conflicts around the world, the new issue of ARCH+ “Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction” asks under what conditions reconstruction is possible.

The title derives from the ancient Greek word metaxy, meaning “between” or “in-between.” It does not name a neutral interval between an irretrievably lost before and a still undetermined after, but the moment when a new order has not yet taken shape in the wake of destruction. This is where reconstruction’s central questions are decided: who is allowed to return, who owns the land, which losses are publicly acknowledged, and which narrative will ultimately be written into houses, streets, and monuments.

—

In Gaza, the scale of destruction extends beyond buildings to encompass land, memory, and social relations. In ARCH+ 265 “Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction”, Eyal Weizman (@eyal_weizman) and Yara Sharif (@architectsforgaza) discuss ruins as sites of political agency, reconstruction as potential warfare, and repair as collective action.

Prior to the Second World War, Berlin’s Hansaviertel was an affluent residential neighborhood. It was rebuilt for the 1957 Interbau International Building Exhibition as the architectural expression of a new society. The deliberate break with the pre-war city erased much that bore witness to its history.

The homes of tomorrow are built today, at the prices of yesterday.

Half a year ago, our first European Citizens‘ Initiative POWER TO RENOVATION ended. Now we’re launching the next one: RIGHT TO HOUSING! NOW AND FOREVER.

The reason is you.

While working on the first initiative, we @houseeurope.eu talked to people and organisations all across Europe. That taught us a lot about its cultures, its politics, its policies. We celebrated real wins together. We also saw our own shortcomings clearly.

So this initiative goes further. It doesn’t just demand to fix what’s broken. It demands we use what’s empty and protect what we have from getting even more expensive. Because housing and climate aren’t two separate crises, they share the same root cause.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. The most affordable, sustainable and fastest way out of both crises is the buildings we already have. So let’s make the system work for us, not the other way around.

For housing within budgets, of people and the planet!

Sign now and get involved 🫰
Because democracy is not a delivery service.

(Signature collection is open from 14 September 2026 until 13 September 2027. Learn more about the initiative, its objectives and the legal proposal. All links in bio. This isn’t just us. It’s a growing network of partner organisations, coordinating the campaign in their own countries across Europe.)

Immanuel Schumacher: “I’ve written a few INTERLUDES and have already rehearsed them with the wonderful METAXY ensemble (@kioomars_musayyebi @nurit_stark , Paul Hübner, @karimbingoel )
These pieces keep popping up in between here and there...
Example: „x !“ for variable instrumentation.
There are also „a !“ (Voices), „s !“ (Short Pieces), „m !“ (Mi Ka Do), „o !“ (Lights),
„n !“ (No & Yes), and quite a few more...
Written in very different notational styles.
Composing remains an absolutely adventurous endeavor for me.
Risks and side effects included.”

“Amphi III, Brückenallee/Hanseatenweg” 2026 by Omer Krieger @omer___krieger
With Yunchuan Cheng, Zhenyan Ding, Germán Farías, Yanlin Huang, Jack Traylen, Koh Yoshitake, Melodi Yüce
In 2020, artist Omer Krieger reconstructed a dance composed by Noa Eshkol in 1953 to commemorate the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on its tenth anniversary. For “Metaxy,” Krieger presents a site-specific adaptation of the performance: Dancers use their bodies to map the former buildings of Brückenallee, which stood on the site of today’s Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg, and whose residents included victims of Nazi persecution. By tracing different histories of fascist violence, the performance mobilizes memory—not as an end in itself, but as a call to resist fascism in the present. “Amphi III, Brückenallee/Hanseatenweg” presents itself as both a choreographic monument to all victims of oppression and a form of antifascist resistance.
