Exciting news! Our editor-in-chief @anhlinh.ngo has been elected Vice-President of @akademiederkuenste, one of Europe’s oldest cultural institutes, where ARCH+ co-curated the exhibition The Great Repair last year. He will be deputy to the Akademie’s new President, @manostsangaris. Congrats to both on their election!

Nächsten Donnerstag!
ARCH+ features 122: „Berlin kommt wieder“
Donnerstag, 25. April 2024, 19 Uhr
Forum Factory, Besselstraße 13/14, 10969 Berlin

Mit: Dionys Ottl (Hild und K), Matthias Sauerbruch @matthias_sauerbruch (Sauerbruch Hutton @sauerbruchhutton) sowie Niklas Maak (Architekturkritiker FAZ) und Nicole Opel (Autorin)
Einführung: Karin Wilhelm (Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaftlerin)
Moderation: Doris Kleilein (JOVIS @jovis_verlag) & Anh-Linh Ngo @anhlinh.ngo (ARCH+ @archplusnet)

Join us on Monday for the next ARCH+ Salon: New Directions in Japanese Architecture

Monday, January 22, 2024, 7 p.m.
ARCH+ Space, Friedrichstraße 23a, 10969 Berlin

Among young Japanese architects, mindsets are shifting: Whereas in the past, the short lifespan of buildings enabled architecture to be tailored to individual clients’ desires and phases of life, today the focus is on communality, new material cultures, gradual transformation, and repairing shrinking neighborhoods. Working in the context of Japan’s population decline, this new generation of architects is leading the way toward a new aesthetic that emphasizes process and community, realigning architecture with its social role.

This turn in Japanese architecture was recently explored in the exhibition Make Do With Now: New Directions in Japanese Architecture, first shown in 2022 at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum @s_am_basel in Basel. The exhibition will now travel to the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn @arhitektuurimuuseum (January 20 to April 28, 2024), providing an opportunity to host this event in Berlin with some of this generation’s protagonists.

Presentations by Yuma Shinohara @shinogee (curator of Make Do With Now, S AM Swiss Architecture Museum @s_am_basel), Wataru Doi @watarudoi (dot architects @dotarchitects.jp), and Chie Konno @konnochie (teco architects @teco.official) will be followed by an in-person panel discussion. Moderation: Markus Krieger (ARCH+ @archplusnet)

With the kind support of the Japanese Cultural Institute (The Japan Foundation).

The event will be in English.

The Great Repair
Exhibition, 14 October 2023 – 14 January 2024
Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Hanseatenweg
Exhibition opening 13 October 2023, 7 p.m.
School of Repair 14 October 2023

The current social and ecological crises are forcing us to rethink our practices: away from exploitation, exhaustion and waste, towards a careful approach to our living environment. The exhibition “The Great Repair” at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, presents over 40 positions from art and architecture as well as spatial practices in which repair becomes tangible as a new design paradigm. It starts with the exhibition building and makes visible processes and spaces of maintenance and care. Its scale ranges from everyday practices of care to examples of a building practice that relies on working with the existing instead of new construction.

Complete list of participants and positions in the comments!
