“The vast, untouched beauty of Alaska’s interior is hard to grasp without being there—something @arctichiveak hopes to share. For @_katielo and me, Sean and Mollie Busby’s passion for dogs, skiing, and their adopted home was contagious. The possibility of using Arctic Hive as a base for multi-day expeditions deeper into Gates of the Arctic is already on the table,” writes @Brigidmander.

Last April, Mander and Photo Editor Katie Lozancich traveled to Alaska’s Brooks Range for a backcountry ski adventure with Mollie and Sean of Arctic Hive. The key to exploring this vast landscape was the Busbys’ dog sled team—three dozen dogs. Dive deeper into the Brooks Range at the link in bio. Full story in Issue 19.4.

“Paws to Peaks” came to life at @ArcticHiveAK this March and April! We loved teaching our guests how to mush, then dogsledding out each day to backcountry ski and ride throughout Alaska’s Brooks Range — including Gates of the Arctic National Park.

We (@SeanBusby + @MollieOfTheNorth) have spent years developing this program — scouting routes, testing terrain, skiing, mushing, training dogs, and growing our dog team. It’s truly a dream come true.

Enrollment for 2026 is now live on the website — we can’t wait to share this backcountry adventure with you!

Alaska, continued…

One of my favorite things about returning to @arctichiveak is watching Mollie & Sean grow their dog team over the years.

Last spring there were new puppies, plenty of snow, and the incredible experience of mushing my own team.

This trip, no snow and no mushing. But LOTS of dog love.

It’s pretty special getting to know these dogs, watching them grow, and coming back to their familiar furry faces. taken in Arctic Hive by @arctichiveak

Third time visiting Mollie & Sean at @arctichiveak, and somehow this place just keeps finding new ways to blow my mind.

This trip was for my 300-hour yoga teacher training, and I’m coming home with so many experiences to reflect on, lessons to absorb, and new things to integrate into my life and practice.

There’s a lot to unpack. A lot to share.

But first… THE SKY.

More to come. ✨ taken in Arctic Hive by @arctichiveak

One spot left to experience early winter in the Brooks Range at our Harvest of the Heart hiking retreat, September 23–27th… is it you?! 🍂❄️

Life between now and the end of September is one of our favorite transitions in the Arctic — hunting, gathering, harvesting, aurora-filled nights, freeze-up, and that unmistakable feeling of winter returning.

And with it comes the excitement of a whole new season — trails freezing in, snow beginning to dust the landscape, and welcoming guests back to our little corner of the Brooks Range.

Harvest of the Heart is a chance to be here for that transition. To hike, slow down, reconnect, and experience this place during one of its most beautiful and fleeting seasons.

We have just one spot left for September 23–27. Maybe it’s yours. 🤎 taken in Wiseman, Alaska by @arctichiveak

Meet the “Creeks” litter (Sansa X Poss). Born on Dec 22nd, they are bigger now but nonetheless still just as cute.

January 13 — just a few days after the first sunrise of 2026.

I took these sun photos looking south at 1:21 p.m., capturing the brief glow of sunrise and sunset that colors the sky this time of year. After January 10, the sun can once again be seen throughout all of Wiseman, appearing for just a few minutes each day as it slowly climbs higher above the horizon. At this low angle, it offers no warmth, but after weeks without it, its return is an incredible boost to the spirit.

For just a few minutes, the alpenglow poured through our windows, illuminating Sansa and her puppies. I couldn’t resist capturing the moment in that beautiful natural light.

January is often the heart of our deep cold, but the return of the sun is always one of the most welcome milestones of the year. taken in Arctic Hive by @arctichiveak

It’s a different July compared to past years. This summer 20 of our sled dogs are down in Juneau running summer dogsled tours on the Norris Glacier until September.

While we know they’re having an incredible time, we still think of them often and miss them dearly.

Thankfully, we’re not all alone at @arctichiveak … We still have our puppies and oldies — which means plenty of dog glitter on our clothing.
