as autumn starts creeping in and the warmer days slowly disappear, i’ve found myself being drawn back to crime stories, thrillers and murder mysteries.

which one of these would be your pick, and what would you have added?

outplayed - mina myles

if you’re a fan of banter intertwined with tooth rotting sweetness, this hockey romance will be perfect!

A college hockey player with his spot on the team endangered by his marks, Jake reluctantly becomes Eliana’s tutoring student. Overbooked and, as would any people-pleasing older sister, always keen to take on more, Eliana steps in as his tutor.

from a tense relationship to friends to more, i loved witnessing the development of Jake and Eliana’s relationship and watching them grow closer. Jake’s character development is the one that touched me the most as we discover just how soft and caring he is behind the mask of the arrogant hockey star.

on a deeper note, Eliana’s character is a great representation for women of colour in academia and for women in stem in general.
The book openly addresses mental health topics, and i want to mention the excellent communication between the characters that was very refreshing after reading many romances where they tiptoe around each other and create issues that could so easily have been avoided with a conversation. The openness and trust between Jake and Eliana makes their dynamic all the more precious, and i loved their chemistry all throughout the book, whether it was in sweet or spicier scenes.

although the book was overall very well written and mostly kept me immersed in Jake and Eliana’s story, i sometimes felt like things said in the dialogue belonged more in the narration than things to be said aloud. A few moments felt slightly fabricates, as if the author really wanted to include a trope/feature in a character and therefore it felt a bit forced, but these occurrences were very few and didn’t impact the quality of the story.

thanks to @lovenotes.pr and @minamylesbooks for giving me the opportunity to be an arc reader for this lovely romance and very sweet adventure, 4/5⭐️

i’m going to be reading romance all year long, but summer does have a knack for the best vibes always, and romance definitely is the perfect summer genre.

which one of these would be your pick?

inspired by a super cool post by @_elsareads , here’s my take at the mid-year freak out tag-

☕️ how many books have you read?
42 and counting!

☕️ best books so far?
the boys of tommen series (yes i’ve only read them early this year), the right move (and the rest of mile high), lights out by jenni fletcher

☕️ best sequel?
absolutely loved rewind it back, the perfect way to tie up a series that meant a lot to me this year

☕️ new release you haven’t read?
soooo many i’m always super late haha, notably one golden summer because i decided to read every summer after in italian and have been progressing at snail’s pace since last summer

☕️ biggest disappointment(s)?
i struggled quite a bit with great big beautiful life, it didn’t feel like the emily henry books i anticipated and loved these past few years

☕️ biggest surprise?
the renegades series by marissa meyer! not at all what i would usually pick up but my flatmate put me on to them and i was engrossed

☕️ new favorite authors?
chloe walsh (how could i not) and alexandra heminsley

☕️ a book that made me cry?
the whole boys of tommen series, especially redeeming 6 and taming 7

what has everyone been reading and loving in this first half of 2025?
