Another 22-page chapter in the bag for my new graphic novel. I was able to complete about 45-pages this academic year while maintaining my full-time teaching job, my full-time parenting job, and my part-time fretting over the news cycle job. If this pace holds, I’ll be finished with the 125-page book around summer 2028. Sooner if I get a sabbatical or fellowship somewhere in there, but still quite a ways to go! I’m honored to be included in the exhibition, “Like Water”, opening this Saturday, May 2nd on Governors Island, curated by the incredible @love.lenalove My book will be on display, as well as a rarely exhibited skin drawing (slide 2) from before my cartooning practice. More info below. “Like Water” is an exhibition exploring the relationships between personal & cultural memory, water, and the art that is created when both are considered. Curated by historian, multidisciplinary artist, and AnkhLave Arts Alliance’s Lead Curator Darlene Deloris. The exhibition will be available for viewing at the AnkhLave House on Governors Island from May 1st-May 30th, 11a-5p Weekends Only. Wacom technologies has just announced that @laguardiacc is the inaugural recipient of their Wacom Lab Grant! This transformative award will provide fifteen Wacom Cintiq 16 pen displays—valued at $10.5k— to the under-resourced Fine Arts and New Media computer labs, serving over 530 students between three majors! Thanks to Humanities Department chair @jessicaboehman who helped me craft the winning application, along with @dahliaelsayed and @sarada.rauch who direct our Fine Arts, Design Studies, & New Media Technology programs. Some big plans for 2026 & beyond… I’ve been quietly working on a new book project for the past 6 months that I’ll hopefully be able to share more about soon. It can be lonely working in a medium with such a long time horizon. Never Again took over five years to complete. If I’m lucky, I’ll finish this one in three. There’s no instant gratification in graphic novels. Just quiet work, panel by panel, page by page. #newwork #graphicnovel #longdistancecartooning #comics by @ari.richter

As a nebbishy Jewish kid, desperate to fit into the sporty, white, Christian culture of Tampa, FL, there was no one I perceived as cooler than local hero Hulk Hogan, who just died. He was the ‘roided up id of Regan & Bush era America, and it’s no surprise that his brand of performative violence and cartoony patriotism endured through the MAGA era. In many ways, our nation is still firmly in the grip of Hulkamania. Side Bar: When his Peter Thiel funded lawsuit against Gawker Media made headlines in the 2010s, it was a surreal Madlib of characters from my Tampa childhood. Bubba the Love Sponge (whose wife was filmed with Hogan in the leaked video) was a shock jock on the local top 40 radio station “The Power Pig”. I listened to Bubba’s show most days in mid-to-late elementary school. It was full of sexism, homophobia, ablism, racism and casual cruelty, which I’ve spent much of my adult life trying to personally deprogram. Maybe these guys could all learn something about channeling aggression from fellow Tampanian & sledgehammer comedian Gallagher (RIP) taken in Tampa, Florida by @ari.richter
