実は、大事なお知らせがあります。
今年から日本の大学院で博士課程を始めます。
昨年からずっとその準備をしていたので、
なかなかSNSに投稿する時間がありませんでしたが、
これからようやく再開します🤗

Happy new year everyone, it’s been a while 🥹
A lot of you have been asking where I’ve been, and a lot of you have guessed it right: since last year, I was preparing the big project of… going back to grad school, to start a PhD, in Japan ✨ the PhD starts this year so I’ll share news about it gradually, apart from the usual language study related content!

🇬🇧 Things I have been told about learning japanese. Today's post is a bit serious but I've been wanting to talk about it for a long time. ✨ This time, big thanks to the wonderful teacher @hinabennet who corrected my Japanese. Since this one was a special post, I wanted to have a good flow in my japanese. 🌼 Have you also been told this sort of things?
🇫🇷 Chose que l'on m'a dites sur l'apprentissage du japonais. Le post d'aujourd'hui est un peu sérieux mais je voulais en parler depuis longtemps. ✨ Cette fois-ci je dois remercier ma super prof @hinabennet puisqu'elle m'a corrigé mon japonais. C'était un post spécial donc je voulais que mon japonais soit fluide. 🌼 Est-ce qu'on vous a également dit ce genre de choses ?

For my next nonfiction read in Japanese I decided to go for a philosophy recap of what’s been said on the topic of happiness, and what it means to “feel content”. ❤️‍🔥

This echoes the last set of lectures I attended online for my Yale University course on psychology—which by the way was absolutely and utterly fascinating—and as I’m reading it, it sort of helps me gather my thoughts on this topic in particular 🫧

It is my first time picking up one of the books that are part of the NHK出版 series, but so far I’m really enjoying it—very easy to read, and from a reliable source since the author is a philosophy Japanese university professor at the Tokyo Medical University 🥺

July was all about deep reading, and enjoying reading classics ✨✨✨ and I rated them all 5 stars, a rare feat!!!
My month started with a bang, since I finally read “Blue Sisters” by Coco Mellors and it was a revelation—it was my first book by her and I think I will read everything she’s written and that she will write from now on 🥺 I then moved onto a new novel in French “La langue des choses cachées” (The language of hidden things) and it was more than wonderful, I was genuinely in awe at discovering the unique storytelling and voice of Cécile Coulon—if you’re into healer stories, this one’s for you 😉
The other 4 books I read, I read them all in parallel until the very end of the month, alternating between each one to allow for deep thinking and reflection. Finally reading “On Liberty” by Mill was a pure delight. The same goes for Murakami’s nonfiction essay about his thoughts on running marathons and being a writer—I had this book on my extended reading list since around 2016, even before the thought of wanting to learn Japanese even crossed my mind…. Crazy stuff guys, crazy stuff 😭 a full-circle moment for me. I enjoyed every bit of this book. That’s it; I’m addicted to Murakami’s nonfiction, in particular. I also love his fiction, but I’ve naturally been revolving around his nonfiction more.
In July I also read a short but very intense philosophical essay on epistemology “Introduction à la pensée complexe” by Edgar Morin—it has answered many questions I was asking myself, and given me much food for thought ✨✨✨
Finally, I was delighted to read “考える教室：大人のための哲学入門” still from the NHK collection 学びのきほん and I loved it! It has given me the last bit of preparation I needed to dive into Descartes again ☺️☺️☺️

How happy do you think I am that René Descartes was French and that he wrote his major works in French, my native language?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m probably at around 1 million. The time has come for me to re-read “Discours de la méthode” and to read “Méditations métaphysiques” for the first time ✨

To be able to verbalize all this into Japanese, I am also reading 考える教室：大人のための哲学入門 on the side ☺️

This is all part of my philosophy self-education curriculum! 😍

Alright guys, here we go for my June reading highlights!!

🇬🇧 In the English literature department, I was BLOWN AWAY by “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath (obviously), and have been writing multiple essays (for my own output practice) about it since. Shook my world, to say the least! In more modern fiction, the one and only Emily Henry stroke again—with an old book of hers that I hadn’t yet read—and I quite enjoyed reading “Happy Place”, although the characters touched me a bit less than those in “Beach Read” and “Book Lovers”! 🤗 Finally, this time in the nonfiction department, I was delighted to discover the essays in the collection “The Japanese Mind” and I actually dedicated a post to it if you’re interested 🫰🏻 (scroll down on my page if you are)

🇯🇵 In Japanese I finally read the amazing “ハンチバック” (“Hunchback”), winner of the prestigious Akutagawa prize in 2023. It was a striking story. A striking writing style. And a striking book altogether. I enjoyed it a lot, but it was way too short—I would have liked it to be way more consistent, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. Let me know if you’ve read it what you thought of it, I’m interested in hearing you guys’ thoughts! (Also, apparently the English translation isn’t great? The Japanese was quite difficult, for those of you who want a challenge!) Lastly, the book “「読む」ってどんなこと？” (“What is reading?”) from the NHK collection 学びのきほん was absolutely wonderful: it was quite challenging, especially in the last chapters, but very rewarding, and it was a topic I was deeply interested to hear about, so I was delighted!

I’ve had this silly dream of being a writer for as long as I can remember — and for a long time, I wasn’t sure what I could do about it.

Learning languages? Found my way on this one.
Academia? Not always sunshine and rainbows, but I probably found my entry-point there too.

But authorship… I’ve always been daunted.

I feel differently now however, and I’m longing for the day I will be able to share what I write with you guys too; and I hope it’ll be worth the wait.
