Don’t Forget to Smile ~ Vibes 🩰💅
My YA ballet novel is in Australian & NZ bookstores now with @blackincbooks! 🔗 in bio for more info. ❤️

Clara has been dancing since she was three and knows exactly what she wants: a place at the Australian National Ballet School and a career as a principal dancer.

Elle, who accidentally found herself TikTok famous after a #balletfail went viral, is new to the dance world and thinks ballet needs to grand jeté itself into the twenty-first century.

Ben, Elle’s best friend, just wants to be able to dance en pointe and have his pick of both male and female solos.

Clara thinks Elle is a bit much. Elle thinks Clara’s uptight. Ben’s a bit stuck in the middle.

All three want to win the International Ballet Grand Prix at the Sydney Opera House. But when a scandal involving a famous dancer threatens their futures, the trio must put aside their differences to confront ballet’s damaging traditions – and demand it do better. by @arianejbeeston

Don’t Forget to Smile, my debut YA novel, is out now!

You don’t stop. You never stop. Not if you want to be the best.

Please enjoy some random Anne Carson screenshots found on my phone on the kitsch-est backgrounds I could find to celebrate this joyous occasion.

I was so grateful that Anne Carson let me reprint these lines in BINMYS which summed up so much of the experience of writing a memoir.

Today is also the deadline for making a submission to @senatormariellesmith’s select committee on women’s health - which seems apt ❤️ by @arianejbeeston

lots has changed in ballet / dance in the past 30 years, some for the better, some for the worse. While social media connects kids it can also exacerbate some of the unhealthiest parts of dance. Author @arianejbeeston and I chatted about comparisons, body image issues, and the new expectations for an online “brand” in our conversation about her YA book Don’t Forget to Smile. The full episode is out now! #authorinterview #balletpodcast #literarypodcast by @arianejbeeston

On this week’s episode, I spoke with @arianejbeeston about her YA novel Don’t Forget to Smile and how she handled its sensitive topics so responsibly. The full conversation comes out this Wednesday and there’s everything from our respective dance nightmares to what we have noticed is different for kids dancing now.

Grateful to speak about pp on @thetodayshow with @belinda.russell & @davidcampbell73 and psychologist Narelle Dickinson

In amongst the conspiracy theories and noise there are the facts

- it’s a psychiatric emergency
- it’s treatable
- recovery is possible

Misdiagnosis does happen and women can fall through the cracks in a system that’s hard to navigate, fragmented and underfunded.

Strange, odd, bizarre behaviour in the perinatal period should always be taken seriously.

TW: This episode discusses crimes against children as well as serious mental health conditions including suicide.

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial in the US is making global headlines and has sparked a passionate conversation about the mental health of mums.

In this episode of The Briefing, Sacha Barbour Gatt speaks with psychologist, author and someone who has experienced the condition, Ariane Beeston from COPE, to unpack the case and how a lack of support for mothers can lead to the most tragic consequences.

I asked others who’ve experienced PP to describe what it was like in a few words to help cut through the noise. How might others identify it in a loved one? What might actually help in this moment of increased “awareness.” Clinically, I was struck by the common themes:
— insomnia even if baby is sleeping
— paranoia
— suspicious
— not myself
— manic
— fractured
— suicidal and homicidal ideation
— terror

Second slide from @laurennovakwrites’s piece.

Symptoms can wax and wane or come and go.

I was seeing things and having delusions while pushing the baby in the pram, shopping for food, ordering coffee, going to mothers’ groups.

It’s not always obvious and often isn’t. by @arianejbeeston
