Should AI be your girlfriend or boyfriend? In my interview with Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic, she explained why this is a terrible idea, and why we should avoid the “cotton candy version of connection” that can be sweet for a moment but not actually filling. Or fulfilling.

We need to stop placing all our bets on the machines. Humans also have recursive self-improvement. My conversation with Anthropic president Daniela Amodei. Swipe →

She’s one of the most prominent women leaders in AI at a time when the AI conversation is dominated by men. She’s at the forefront of frontier models, but she doesn’t just speak tech. She speaks about nature, community, friendship, and self-reflection. Here’s what we talked about:

AI has recursive self-improvement. So do humans.

What her 5-year-old thinks she does all day

Which books are on her nightstand?

What will we value from doctors and teachers in the future?

What keeps her up at night (besides her kids)

What she learned about AI from a moms’ group

Why romantic partners are a “terrible use of AI”

Which ideas stay with you? Tell me in the comments.

Right now, 75% of Americans are anxious and afraid about AI. People are even bringing their concerns into their therapy sessions, sorting through everything from how AI impacts their jobs to more existential fears about humanity’s future.

These concerns are real. But they’re only part of the story.

To go deeper, I sat down with Daniela Amodei. As president of Anthropic, she is a unique figure in AI. With everyone at the company reporting to her, she is not only a key AI leader, but the most prominent woman leader at a time when the AI conversation is dominated by men. She’s at the forefront of frontier models, but she also studied literature, she played the flute, she’s a mother. She doesn’t just speak tech, she speaks about nature, community, friendship, and self-reflection.

In my conversation with Daniela, we explore:
• why the discussion about recursive self-improvement has to include humans, not just the machines
• the dance between humans and AI, and what happens when one partner keeps growing and the other stagnates
• letting AI own intelligence and letting humans own wisdom, and why “Claude can never be your manager, or your therapist, or your partner, or your kids”
• how AI’s power of hyper-personalization can transform health, because health is also about what happens between doctor visits when we improve our daily habits around food, movement, sleep, stress management and connection
• whether AI, unlike social media, can nurture our better angels instead of activating our lesser ones and strengthening the worst in us

Also:
• why her 5-year-old thinks her job is taking care of an alligator named Claude
• why Leaves of Grass and Yesteryear are both on her nightstand
• why there should never be an AI czar

James McCrae’s poem on a soul’s manual for becoming a human being:

“On this planet, nothing is permanent. People and things will come and go. You will fall in love and form sentimental attachments only to lose everything you hold dear. So cling to nothing too tightly, even yourself, and when it’s time to let go, let go with grace, for nothing is owned, only borrowed.” - @wordsarevibrations by @ariannahuff

Something I’ve found to be very true when I look back at my own life! by @ariannahuff

“Wonder is not something we outgrow. It is something we must resist forgetting.”

In their beautiful new children’s book, Ocean of Stars, author Azita Ardakani and artist Rebecca Rebouché invite readers of every age to rediscover wonder and our connection to the world around us.

In a moment when answers are instant, Azita asks whether our capacity to be astonished is keeping up. She points to the stars and reminds us that the carbon in our bodies was forged in them. As she writes, “We are not simply living in the universe. We are an expression of it.”

I love technology. I’ve started two very tech-centric companies. But ultimately, technology is just a tool, one that can add to our lives or deplete and diminish them. Much like a hammer: a very useful tool, but not if you hit yourself in the head with it, which produces roughly the same cognitive effect as doomscrolling.

The good news is that more and more people are choosing to put the hammer down.

“Bloomscrolling” is a growing trend of choosing uplifting, inspiring content over the endless doomscroll. And it matters. @Harvard experts link heavy consumption of distressing news to anxiety, depression, headaches, poor sleep, low appetite and higher blood pressure.

People are acting on this beyond the feed, too. @Pinterest reports searches for “offline hobbies” are up 551% year over year, and searches for “no phone ideas” are climbing as well.

The grab for our attention is the new gold rush, and our attention is our most precious resource. That’s why I believe no one should have phones on the table during a meal. There are few things better than sharing a meal with a friend without being constantly tempted to check your phone.

So today, try one Microstep: before you close your feed, follow one account that leaves you feeling inspired, and unfollow one that leaves you feeling depleted.

What a remarkable day at #ThinkHealth, Alice Walton’s health and AI conference at the @heartlandwholehealthinstitute in Bentonville.

Every time I’m in Bentonville, I’m more inspired by what Alice is building. First came the @crystalbridgesmuseum. Then the Heartland Whole Health Institute and the @awsom_med. And next up is the AWSOM Whole Health Campus. It’s another step toward bringing to life Alice’s vision of integrating health, art and nature.

It was the perfect setting to share my interview with Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic. With everyone at the company reporting to her, Daniela is not only a key AI leader, but the most prominent woman leader at a time when the AI conversation is dominated by men. She’s at the forefront of frontier models, but she also studied literature, she played the flute, she’s a mother. She doesn’t just speak tech, she speaks about nature, community, friendship and self-reflection.

We spoke about the need to expand the public conversation to include not just recursive self-improvement for machines but recursive self-improvement for humans. Because the biggest risk for humanity is continuing to place all our bets on the machines.

As Daniela put it, “The whole reason we’re developing this technology is to help humans flourish and thrive and live better lives.” We explored the potential for AI hyper-personalization to transform health and the value of wisdom in a world where AI is dethroning intelligence.

These themes carried through the rest of the day. I hosted a panel on AI, health and the future of brain resilience with @jenoleksiw, Group Vice President of US Neuroscience at @elilillyco; Tina Stankovic, professor and chair of head and neck surgery at @stanford.med; and @danielnadlerworkshop, Founder and CEO of @open.evidence. And I sat down with Nate Gross, who leads health at @openai and has been called “a human encyclopedia of digital health.”

Thank you, Alice, for bringing us all together for these vital conversations, and for all the work you’re doing to redefine the future of healthcare, both for the heartland and beyond. by @ariannahuff

Great water, even better company. A lovely evening with @infatuation_nyc and @loonenwater. Thank you Clara Sieg, Loonen’s amazing founder, and Paul Needham, Infatuation’s CEO and my amazing son-in-law. by @ariannahuff

Today is World Mental Health Day. And we’ve made great progress in recent years raising awareness and opening up the conversation about mental health.

This year, I hope we take it one step further: mental health is brain health. A growing body of research shows how our brain health connects to everything from daily brain fog and anxiety to long-term cognitive decline.

So here’s a Microstep to try today: take a moment to check-in with your own mental health by naming the feeling you’re having right now in one word. Simply putting a feeling into words can help calm the brain’s stress response.

It might be “overwhelmed.” Or “tired.” Or “uncertain.”

Whatever it is, naming it is a small way to build the muscle of self-awareness, one of the most powerful tools we have for our mental and brain health. by @ariannahuff

AI keeps pulling off things that used to be impossible. In my latest On My Mind newsletter, I write why we shouldn’t lose sight of the eight “wonders of life,” as coined by @UCBerkeleyOfficial professor Dacher Keltner, that create everyday moments of awe: moral beauty, movement, nature, music, visual design, spirituality and religion, big ideas, and life and death.

Plus, dispatches from @Dreamforce, the @LucasMuseum, and my own home, where I recently hosted an event that captured the possibility of this moment when it comes to brain health.
