True progress begins when we take the responsibility to actively protect what matters most. To build a better future, the Guardian is driven by a deep need to advocate for empathy, defend equality, and ensure our communities remain safe.

It takes immense strength to realise that lasting change comes from protecting the next generation and teaching them to understand one another better.
Here is what Aritha Wickramasinghe had to say on the TEDxColombo stage about the power of social and emotional learning, and how we can set the foundation for a lasting, durable peace.

Ed Sheeran @teddysphotos said in his statement that he does not use his professional platform for politics, that those who come for his shows don’t expect a political forum. But that’s exactly the opposite of what he’s been doing all along. Ed went to Kyiv to support the Ukrainian people, performed at a concern to support Ukraine and helped raise funds for Ukraine. In his own words he said: “It just so happens, that musicians can do something”. @macklemore did do something. He did exactly what Ed has been saying all along. But unfortunately, for Ed and a group of billionaires, not all lives matter, especially when they are Palestinian lives. No amount of cancel culture can cancel the truth of the genocide and apartheid being faced by the people of Palestine by the State of Israel. And no amount of billions can wipe away the guilt in your conscience for not just your silence but enabling those who murder innocent children and silencing those who speak up for them. #freedom #freepalestine🇵🇸 #edsheeranconcert #edsheeran #endgenocide taken in Colombo, Sri Lanka by @aritha.w

We WILL NOT STAY SILENT 🙏

Given the situation we can see how much of an mentality some predators have even towards there own mother and sister even when reported they come back without no FREAKING REGRETS AT ALL !!!! And for them to say to add them up from the new account it self mean THAT THEY WONT STOP FROM HERE

So we need to stay on guard and step up and speak until we get a proper reply or response

This is cus someone spoke out on behalf of us imagine if those who spoke up didn’t speak imagine how much more worse stuff would have happen then

10 years ago, I was swept off my feet by a handsome Irishman outside a bar in London. Not soon after that moment, I knew that my life would never be the same again. 10 years since that day, we’ve moved countries, got married, bought our home and started our own version of a family with our doggies. But through all the changes and moments, I’ve only loved you more. Thank you for being my No.1. ❤️ Happy Anniversary my love.

43 years ago today, mostly Sinhalese gangs, with Government support, killed nearly 3000 Tamil civilians. Many were burned alive.

The mobs had access to the postal list and knew which homes and businesses belonged to Tamil people.

It took 5 days for the Government to do anything to stop the violence. President Jayawardena failed to offer any condolences or sympathy with the victims of the violence. In stead, he empathised with his sponsored mobs.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga finally issued an apology to the Tamil people in her pursuit of peace and reconciliation.

The civil war that started in that date, raged on until May 2009, when it ended in another brutal ending.

Nearly 100,000 Sri Lankans died as a consequence of our civil war. It was a conflict that was a result of the failure of consecutive Governments to provide equal rights and dignity to all our people.

Have we learnt our lessons from the causes and outcomes of this conflict?

Happy Anniversary to my one and only love @daithicakes. I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since that very special day. It feels like yesterday walking down the aisle in London and dancing until 3am to Beyoncé.

We were so blessed to have our family and loved ones all around us that day, as we committed to live our lives together.

Thank you for loving me like you do everyday. For being my biggest champion. My safe space. And for making me happy every day. I am blessed to have you and to call you my husband and I look forward to growing old with you.

I love you. Always.

Love wins.

A 65-year-old businessman and shopkeeper has been arrested for sexually abusing a 5 year old girl. The child had gone to the shop to buy biscuits.

The man allegedly lured the child into the interior of the shop and sexually abused her.

The child has been admitted to Chilaw General Hospital and referred to a Judicial Medical Officer. The suspect has been arrested.

Sri Lanka is facing an epidemic of child abuse that is not being addressed systematically.

In 2025 alone, the National Child Protection Authority received 10,455 child abuse complaints, an average of 29 complaints every day.

More than 4,200 child abuse cases remain pending before Sri Lanka’s High Courts, with over 1,600 cases listed for hearing in January 2026 alone.

The average child rape case takes 13 years to conclude.

In most cases, the alleged perpetrator is someone known to the child. Many children do not realise they have been abused, while others are too afraid to tell their parents.

Parents must always talk openly with their children about abuse, consent and personal boundaries, create safe opportunities for disclosure, reassure children that they will be believed, and remain alert to changes in behaviour. taken in Colombo, Sri Lanka by @aritha.w

MP Jeevan Thondaman has called for the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate child sexual abuse within religious institutions and ensure justice for victims.

He has also asked a question that deserves wider attention:

Why is the responsibility for this issue being left to the Women’s Caucus alone?

Child sexual abuse is not a women’s only issue.

It is a national issue.

Men have an equal responsibility to protect children, prevent abuse and hold abusers accountable.

The case involving allegations against Pallegama Hemarathana Thera has shocked the country. But it has also exposed a broader reality that many would rather ignore.

Children continue to be abused in institutions that are trusted with their care.

Justice for those children cannot depend on the status, title or influence of the accused.

Nor can safeguarding children be left to one group of parliamentarians.

Protecting children is the responsibility of all of us.

Parliament must now show that it is prepared to confront this issue, wherever it exists and whoever it implicates. taken in Colombo, Sri Lanka by @aritha.w

Lawyer Aritha Wickramasinghe, who is Equality Director at iProbono, discusses the issues with Sri Lanka’s justice system that were highlighted by the case of Sivaloganathan Vidya, an 18-year-old schoolgirl from Jaffna who was abducted, gang raped and murdered in 2015. On 6 May 2026, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence imposed by the High Court Trial-at-bar on the four accused of perpetrating the crime, bringing the case to a conclusion after 11 years.
