Sri Lanka is a highly resilient nation in which, we have often been exposed to many natural and man-made disasters. Not too long ago, we all were terrorised by the Easter Attacks (21/04/2019); three churches and three luxury hotels in Sri Lanka were targeted in a series of coordinated terrorist suicide bombings. Two hundred and fifty-nine (259) people were killed and left at least 500 people with injuries.
As Sri Lanka approaches its one-year commemoration, we are faced with a global pandemic which has diverted the majority of nation’s attention and care. Yet Sri Lanka has not forgotten the victims of the Easter Attack and nor have we at Kind Hearted Lankans. We have conducted a needs assessment in February 2020 which comprised of all Easter victims who may require further assistance. We are committed to continue our support through possible means.

We may not be able to change our yesterday, but together can change our tomorrow. The most beautiful people we have known are those who have experienced defeat, suffering, struggle, loss and have found their way out of the depths. These people have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness and a deep loving concern. The 2019 Easter Attack is a tale of tragic loss, unimaginable change and painstaking perseverance through it all. This is their story.

I went to Oxford to be a part of a panel to discuss South Asian LGBT rights with fellow comrades from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The panel happened the night after the pogrom in Delhi and I went on a ramble about how everything sucks and this is my face after calling out right wing queers and everyone else for the Trans Bill, the CAA NRC and all the power hunger we are now seeing the result of. .
Privileged to have been there speaking to some amazing people and I left there a little hopeful than when I entered.

Ashan is only 12 and the youngest of three. His brother Vijaykumar just turned 16 and his sister Jazeema is still 17.
Together, these children reflect not only the beautiful diversity of our country but also our failings to celebrate it.
Ashan’s father is Muslim and his mother Hindu. His parents were left homeless after residents of their village chased them away for their inter religious marriage.
Today, they live in a makeshift shack determined to love and look after each other and their family despite the many odds against them.
Life hasn’t been kind to Ashan. His makeshift home just collapsed. He was only 8 when he stopped going to school.
With some help, we got Ashan back to school. He loves it and is determined to keep studying so that one day he can look after his family.

But he also needs your help. He needs a safe roof over his head. One that won’t collapse again. Ashan needs a place he can spend with his family, a place he can sleep peacefully at night, a place he can call home.
Ashan’s family is an example to us all. In an age where we so easily mistreat and mistrust one another - not because of any flaw in their character but because of their faith or race - Ashan and his family shows us that love can always transcend the boundaries placed by man.
Together we can not only help Ashan stay at school. We can also send a message to the kind of Sri Lanka we want for us all. A Sri Lanka where every child has an education. A Sri Lanka where every child has a roof over their heads. A Sri Lanka that is KIND 🥰

On #Day3 of our #LGBTHistoryMonth campaign, we are pleased to share Aritha's thoughts on the LGBT movement.

Aritha Wickramasinghe leads iProbono’s Equality Law work in #SriLanka and is a pioneering activist in the field of diversity and inclusion. He has spearheaded several global initiatives promoting #equality and #HumanRights throughout his career.
Aritha has advised the Sri Lankan Government on policy reform and is very active in lobbying for the decriminalisation of #homosexuality and strengthening the rights of #LGBT Sri Lankans. For his work, Aritha was ranked #1 in the Financial Times Outstanding list of Top 30 LGBT Future Leaders.
