POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hello, I am Martha. 😊👋🏽 A few years ago, I invited a few artists to collaborate with me to form a small collective, Artists Speak Up NG.

With them, I curated two publications exploring art, voice, and expression; both of which are still available on Medium - link in bio.

Now, I have given that space a new form: a gallery named after my grandmother, Arit Nyok, in a small corner inside Akara Cafe Pavillon, @pavillondining; so these conversations can move beyond pages, and people can encounter art in the middle of everyday life.

If you are ever at @pavillondining, take a moment to visit our corner. If you are an artist, feel free to reach out. aritnyok@gmail.com

Peace & love,
Martha Rrazi

At Arit Nyok Gallery, we engage with our audiences through four distinct exhibition and cultural programme formats:

🖼 Gallery Exhibitions, curated and developed by the Gallery.

🎨 Hosted Exhibitions, artist-led, presented in partnership with the Gallery.

✨ Artist Spotlights, celebrating individual artists and their practice.

💬 Salons & Workshops, conversations that foster learning, dialogue and a deeper appreciation of art, culture and heritage.

Whether you're an artist, collector, or simply curious, we hope you'll find something here that inspires you.

We look forward to welcoming you.

We had quite an engaging conversation about the use of otherwise discarded materials in art, as @barasketchbook and @thechisomnwankwo closed our first Artist Spotlight.

Thank you to everyone who came, listened and added their voice, and to @pavillondining for hosting.

And with that we have come to the end of our first Artist Spotlight. 😊

Thank you @barasketchbook for sharing your work with us; @thechisomnwankwo for joining us in conversation; and everyone who came by, engaged, and shared in the experience. 💛

Look out for moments from our closing conversation. ✨️

Tomorrow, Sunday, October 4, we are hosting @aritnyok's Art, Waste & What We Deem Valuable - a conversation about the use of otherwise discarded materials in art.

Artist, @barasketchbook sits in conversation with creative entrepreneur Chisom Nwankwo of @theskilledwomen and @ciie_official, as they explore how materials once considered waste can find new meaning through art and design.

Attendance is open.

This is Buhu, a jute sack commonly used in Northern Nigeria to transport agricultural produce.

Once it's served its purpose, it is typically discarded.

But in Bara’s practice, Buhu becomes an archive - carrying stories of trade routes, exchange, and the invisible labour of workers who essentially fuel our lives.

Through his work, he invites us to reconsider what we deem valuable, and reflect on the unseen forces that shape our world.

Who decides what is valuable? And when does something become waste?

Join us this Sunday for Art, Waste & What We Deem Valuable.

4pm, Arit Nyok Gallery, inside Akara Café Pavillon (find on Google).

Who decides what is valuable?

In closing our first Artist Spotlight, we invite our spotlight artist, Toluwanimi Adediran Williams, @barasketchbook, into conversation with another creative entrepreneur who also works with discarded materials: Chisom Nwankwo, @thechisomnwankwo, founder of @theskilledwomen and Creative Director of @ciie_official.

Together, they will explore art, waste and the things we choose to discard.

What makes something waste?
When does it become valuable again?
What role can artists (and other creatives) play in changing the way we see the things we throw away?
