Tomorrow, Sunday, October 4, we are hosting @aritnyok's Art, Waste & What We Deem Valuable - a conversation about the use of otherwise discarded materials in art.

Artist, @barasketchbook sits in conversation with creative entrepreneur Chisom Nwankwo of @theskilledwomen and @ciie_official, as they explore how materials once considered waste can find new meaning through art and design.

Attendance is open.

I think it was the year 2020, when the world was going to shit, and Nigerian politicians were hoarding INDOMIE!!!, that I thought to form an artist collective, to speak to the decay in our Nigerian society, through art. I called it Artists Speak Up, Nigeria.

I cold-called different artists right here on Instagram. Random DMs telling my admiration for their work and asking if they would like to join the Collective.

Bara was one of those artists and he agreed, creating a few pieces for the project. Over time, I got to know him beyond the Collective, which exposed me to his art, his process, and his back story. ❤️

The Collective went cold after two publications. I didn't have enough creative energy to continue; I had to put all my energy into Akara Café. I needed to not be a broke artist. Lol.

Since then, Bara has gone on to become a star. A vibrantly coloured one too. I encounter his pieces at exhibitions and I feel a secret pride. 🙂 Bold, fearless and commanding.

Still, he was gracious enough to honour my new little gallery, which is basically a continuation of that Collective, with works to make this Spotlight happen.

If you come by @pavillondining, do stop by @aritnyok gallery to have a feel of @barasketchbook's artistry.

The pieces are available for acquisition.

Just one last spin after the exhibition. Standing alone there while everyone was gone and taking one last look at the works I can’t describe how excited I was, excited that I reached out, excited for the conversations, excited for the people who came and for the ones who’s been keeping touch with comments, likes and shares, Thankful to God :)❤️❤️, so thankful to @martha_rrazi for the amazing work you did… I keep saying it this is way way beyond what I thought, thankful for @pavillondining to @aritnyok I know we still have a lot of things to do in the future, thankful to @le.ceramique for saying yes to the collaboration because without your amazing sculptures all this would be a different story entirely, thank you 🙏, thankful to @karinarteph for the meaningful conversations and inspirations as well. And for everyone else I didn’t mention I’m very grateful we crossed paths. While the Year I of the project Abuja exhibition closes and I look forward to to more exhibitions and collaborations on the works in the project i also want to use this opportunity to announce that I’m off to the Year II of the 6year project LUST PROJECT. THANK YOU ALL🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

It feels a little surreal to be having my first solo photography exhibition.

Portraits of a Home — a series exploring memory, space, and the traces people leave behind — is on view in Abuja until 12 April.

Thank you to everyone who has already come through and spent time with the work.

If you’re around, please stop by:
Arit Nyok Gallery, Rooftop of Strip Mall, Garki, Abuja.
