What stories are waiting beneath the surface? 🐋🌊

In ŌSENI, filmmaker @carterkirilenko join a team of explorers, scientists, and storytellers on a journey to Vavaʻu, Tonga, following humpback whales and the ancient stories that connect them to the Ocean.

Alongside National Geographic Explorer @zuzu.askin, the team set out to explore the lives of humpback whales while supporting ongoing research in the region. Through their journey, Carter captures not only the beauty of these extraordinary animals, but the sense of wonder that comes from entering a world we still know so little about.

The expedition brought together storytelling and science, collecting skin samples, fluke identifications, behavioural data, and environmental DNA to help researchers better understand the lives and health of humpback whales across Tonga.

But ŌSENI is about more than what we can discover through science. It is also about reconnecting with the ancient stories of the Ocean — and remembering that there is still so much we have yet to understand.

A Living Systems Category Winner of the Oceanic Global Short Film Festival 2026, ŌSENI invites us into a world shaped by curiosity, connection, and a shared effort to better understand the Ocean and the beings who call it home.

Celebrating an incredible moment for Ocean with David Attenborough and everyone who helped bring its story to the world. 🌊🏆

The film has taken home two Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Program.

As co-producers of Ocean with David Attenborough, Arksen and 10% for the Ocean are incredibly proud to have played a part in a film that shines a light on the extraordinary life beneath the surface, and the urgent need to protect it.

The message of the film is ultimately one of hope: our ocean can recover, if we give it the chance.

From the devastating impact of bottom trawling to the remarkable return of marine life in protected waters, Ocean with David Attenborough shows us what is at stake, but also what is possible when we choose to protect, restore and regenerate our ocean.

An Emmy is a moment to celebrate. But the work doesn’t stop here.

At 10% for the Ocean, we believe that protecting our ocean requires more than awareness. It requires action, funding and long-term commitment, supporting the people, projects and solutions working to create a healthier ocean for generations to come.

We are deeply grateful to Sir David Attenborough for giving the ocean a voice that reaches millions, and to the filmmakers, scientists, communities, funders, policymakers and partners who continue to turn awareness into action.

Here’s to celebrating the team, the film and, most importantly, what we do next for our ocean. 🌊
