Assignment No. 1: The secret is out! 🇿🇦

I’m off to South Africa for six weeks to document three exciting and important stories!

I remember so many feelings rushing through my mind as I prepared for this adventure. I was excited to travel somewhere new and capture stories I had been longing to tell. I was nervous too, wanting to do these stories justice and tell them with the care and sensitivity they deserve. And, of course, there was a little stress, as I had just three weeks to get everything done before leaving!

It was a whirlwind of emotions, but I couldn’t wait to get started.

Week One of the Storyteller in Residence 🌊

I can confirm that even at this point, all those months ago, it still hadn’t quite sunk in!

As soon as I was given the green light, I got straight to work. Calls, research, planning, budgeting and figuring out how much I could squeeze out of every location and story. Before heading off on any assignment, there’s a huge amount of work behind the scenes to make sure everything flows as smoothly as possible. Of course, you can’t predict Mother Nature, but you can certainly give it your best shot!

Looking back at that first week, I can’t help but smile. I was excited, nervous and full of anticipation. This role means so much to me, and I want to make sure that over the next year, I tell stories that matter. Stories that deserve to be heard and need a light shone on them.

Now, several months on and having completed my first assignment, I wish I could go back and whisper a few words of reassurance to that past version of myself: Take a deep breath. You’ve got this. And just wait until you see what this summer has in store for you! 🥹

A charter listing that reads like a sales listing is selling the wrong thing. Guests don't care about the hull laminate. They care about breakfast on the aft deck, the tender run to a beach, the water at six in the morning. Europe takes around seven in ten charter bookings worldwide and every forecast has the market growing. The yachts that fill their calendars are the ones whose media sells the week.

Brokerage sales passed four billion euros in the first half of this year. Fewer boats sold than last year, but the money went up, because buyers are selective and committing hard when a yacht is presented properly. Brokers describe the market as functioning but unforgiving. In an unforgiving market the listing media isn't decoration. It's the first viewing, and most buyers never ask for a second one if the first is weak.

Winner of the Underwater World category at the prestigious Spanish nature photography competition MontPhoto, selected from nearly 15,000 entries.

This dynamic image features one of the most unique animals on our planet: the marine iguana. Found nowhere else but the Galápagos archipelago, these extraordinary reptiles famously failed to impress Charles Darwin, who referred to them as “imps of darkness”. For me, the opposite is true — I have a profound admiration for these remarkable animals.

Each day, once their cold-blooded bodies have absorbed enough warmth, marine iguanas plunge from volcanic rocks into the turbulent surf below. It’s an inhospitable environment even for experienced swimmers, yet the iguanas are utterly determined, powering through the frothing water with powerful sweeps of their tails.

I took one final breath and followed this iguana as it descended towards the boulders below. Its lucid eyes immediately found a patch of its favourite algae — despite their formidable appearance, marine iguanas are vegetarians. The surge tossed us both from side to side as I struggled to hold my position, while the iguana clung tightly to the rocks with its sharp claws.

Of course, I wasn’t the first to photograph marine iguanas underwater, but I wanted to bring something fresh to their imagery. The violence and movement of the water seemed perfectly suited to the character of the scene, so I used a slow shutter speed to capture the water streaking across the iguana’s body.

For me, the resulting image feels like a glimpse into a world that is as wild and unforgiving as it is extraordinary.

Nothing can ever really prepare you for witnessing a humpback whale for the first time. There was something almost ethereal about their presence. I remember feeling incredibly small, not insignificant, but humbled by a world so much bigger than our own.

As part of the @arksen Ocean Fellowship, we had the opportunity to support @10percentfortheocean and the Whale Signal Project through fieldwork in the waters of Tonga, learning from these remarkable animals while contributing to the work to understand and protect them.

Everyone’s talking about the “BER months”

So I thought I’d look at them a little differently.

SeptemBER.
OctoBER.
NovemBER.
DecemBER.

But what if we made them SOBER?

Not because you have to.
Not because drinking automatically makes you a bad person.

But because sometimes you need to find out who you are when you stop using alcohol to switch off, fit in, numb things or escape.

For me, sobriety gave me mornings back.
My head back.
My time back.
And eventually, a life I actually wanted to be present for.

You don’t need to wait until January.

Make the next four months count.

Make them SOBER.
