Join us on First Friday, November 6, from 5-9 PM for the opening of our second Knoxville Featured Exhibition! Through ceramic sculpture, Knoxville-based artist Hannah Langer (@jun_before_july) explores themes of identity, belonging, and place in “Places Known and Unknown.”

“Places Known and Unknown is a presentation of multiple ceramic sculptures brought together as I explore how I define where I come from, both the place I grew up in and the one I could only imagine. Answering questions of race, family, and belonging, my work draws from my lived experience as a transracial adoptee who grew up with two white parents off the coast of Massachusetts.

Growing up I often found different ways to associate with my cultural heritage, whether that be examining the distinctive lattice screens found in Chinese architecture or ink wash mountains in Chinese paintings. Beginning with this imagery, I transform the ceramic sculptures into natural objects I grew up seeing in Massachusetts, such as coastal rocks and seaweed. Through these familiar objects, I bring a sense of home to a part of my history that I long for despite never knowing it firsthand. By combining these two aspects of my identity: the one I never knew and the one that I get homesick for, I understand how I can miss being separated from a place.

As a transracial adoptee, I often feel a sense of disassociation when I talk about my Chinese heritage. I question whether I am Chinese enough to claim this aspect of my identity. Within this installation, I challenge these ideas by emphasizing how my own lived experience can combine with a heritage I am working to understand.”

Hannah Jun Langer was born in Anhui, China and raised in Massachusetts after being adopted as a baby. She is currently living in North Carolina, where she is exploring local clays and materials. Borrowing from nature, her work takes inspiration from the ocean, as she thinks about how her transracial adoption has shaped her identity and sense of home.

Looking for something spooky you’ll want to keep out year-round? 💀 Explore Tom Bartel’s (@bartel_tom) pieces before they disappear...

Tom Bartel is a ceramic sculptor who maintains a studio in Athens, Ohio, where he serves as Professor and Ceramics Chairperson at Ohio University. His works are constructed to refer to both the body and charged, stylized, surrogates for the body, such as dolls, toys, and figurines. At the core of his work is the human condition, which is used to investigate the concepts of disguise, identity, fertility, and mortality, among others.

Perfect for Halloween, you can shop Tom’s work at 110 S. Gay St., Knoxville, TN, Wednesday-Saturday, 10 AM-5 PM by @arrowmont_galleries

𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡: Cynthia Bringle (@cynthiabringle)

Bringle has been an artist since childhood in Memphis, TN, but she didn’t start ceramics until she was a student at the Memphis Academy of Art. She started her art career believing she was destined to be a painter, but when she took her first ceramics class and got to throw on a kick wheel, she began to reconsider her path. Soon, she was spending all her time in the clay studio.

She got her BFA from Memphis Academy of Art and her MFA from Alfred University in New York. She took classes at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine, taught at Penland, and later at Arrowmont. After teaching at Penland, she moved to North Carolina, opened a studio, and has been a pillar of the arts and crafts community since 1970.

She has received many awards, including the NC Award for Fine Art, NC Living Treasure, an Honorary Doctorate from Memphis College of Art, and Trustee Emeritus of The American Craft Council. She has also served as a Board Member of Penland School of Craft. Her work appears in many collections, including the Mint Museum in NC, the Lowe Museum in FL, the High Museum in GA, the Fuller Craft Museum in MA, and, of course, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

Check out Harmonious Chaos (It’s Just a Bottle Opener) by Artist-in-Residence Anna R. Koplik (@arkoplik), on view now as part of our 2026-2027 Artists-in-Residence Introduction Exhibition, open through December 11.

With a focus on refinement in craft and blurring the lines between function, design, and concept, my work challenges preconceived notions of what blacksmithing can and should be. I frequently fixate on tool and utensil making, enjoying their pure function. Simultaneously I explore whimsical and absurdist combinations between function and decoration through extreme proportions and nonsensical designs. In “Harmonious Chaos (It’s Just a Bottle Opener)”, I am leaning into complex forgings and overly complicated joinery while merging vastly different aesthetics to create a cohesive piece. These mashed-together aesthetics, combined with the disjointed design and purpose of this piece, allows me to investigate what unity means in craft, while challenging the viewer’s idea of whether or not an object can or should be made.

After graduating from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Jewelry, Anna Koplik shifted her focus to blacksmithing and began traveling, working and teaching at crafts schools and as a journeyman architectural smith, and going on adventures whenever possible. Her personal work focuses mainly on tool and utensil making, and combining functionality with a refined, delicate aesthetic. Anna has worked at a variety of shops, including Atlas Forge, Caleb Kullman Studio, Spirit Ironworks, Davis Metalsmiths, and Kjellman-Chapin Smeder, as well as taught at various craft schools such as Penland, Touchstone, Center for Metal Arts, Haystack, and John C. Campbell. She is currently focusing on further developing her own body of work as an Artist in Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

In her free time, when not traveling or enjoying nature, she perused the many art studios and galleries around town and took advantage of art classes from the vastly talented pool of artists. She now resides in Rutledge, TN, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is instrumental as she continues her creative journey. She hopes you find a piece of her work that brings you joy.

On view through December 4 in the Jerry Drown Wood Studio Gallery is “and”i”run”like”mad”never”catching”up”with”myself” - works by kyle cottier! 👏

"I am an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with wood and photography to create sculptural forms through the accumulation of thousands of small parts—modular units woven into larger structures.

My process is rooted in repetition, weaving, and mending, guided by a logic of interdependence and preservation. These porous forms—often latticed and suspended in tension—serve as traces in the hotbed of memory, where what remains is shaped as much by absence as by presence. I approach memory as physical and provisional, a space continually unmade and rebuilt over time." - kyle cottier

Join us for our “Perfectly Pocket Sized: Case Paper with Laced Tapes Book” workshop with Heather F. Wetzel on Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Participants will bind their own perfectly pocket-sized 4” x 5” blank book, just right for writing or sketching on the go. This non-adhesive structure is sewn over tapes laced and into beautiful, durable handmade flax case paper. The class will cover the basics of bookbinding terminology, tool usage, paper prep, sewing on tapes, folding the case paper for the cover, and lacing in our text blocks. Beginners, ages 16 and up, are welcome.

On Saturday, October 24, from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM, the Arrowmont Gallery will host a “Printed City Texture” workshop. Join local artist and Roane State Professor Bryan Wilkerson for a creative texture-hunting adventure through downtown. Equipped with silicone putty, participants will explore the city while collecting impressions from interesting surfaces and hidden textures found along the way.

After urban foraging, participants will return to the gallery to transform these textures into unique stamps. Using these handmade tools, participants will create original monoprints and finish them with hand-embellished details.
