You have to see this animation by @jesi_rgb! He (Jesús Rascón) did such a fantastic job on it.

Name Sans was a project conceived as a variable font from the beginning, and the possibilities of animation drove many key design decisions, like giving it as wide of a weight range as reasonably possible, giving it a continuous Italic axis, and making sure glyph forms could smoothly interpolate across the full range of styles. So, I’m so excited that Jesús wanted to bring Name Sans Variable to life with a reel like this!

These animations were created by Jesús with a mix of @coldtypexyz and @cavalry.app, and set to original music by Jesús. In his words: “Every part of the animation has meaning behind it. The squares throughout represent the subway mosaic tiles that Name Sans was inspired by. The animation explores the variable ranges, but it also highlights a few of the less obvious OpenType features. It uses ColdType to sync up the MIDI beat to the font and grid animations, and then Calvary for other sequences and to put it all together.”

2) I’ve just published a deep-dive design process article about the making of Kyrios, on ArrowType.com!

This is one of my favorite monuments in the Green-Wood Cemetery of Brooklyn, NY. It is for to Mary Cooke, buried October 14, 1890.

Here’s the primary stone casting that inspired the project.

I sketched a lot to figure out how the shapes might look in a modern, two-dimensional font.

I had to figure out what most letters might look like, as only a few appeared on the actual monument. Others needed exploration to work well in the spacing and aesthetics of a modern font.

The same was true for the lowercase, accents, punctuation, symbols, and more. Some shapes could be derived from the monument, but most had to be designed anew.

Some of the original shapes worked in the context of the original monument, but didn’t play well in a font with tighter, more regular spacing.

Here’s the first draft of the font, which had only these letters. It looks neat, but it’s a bit fussy, and strokes feel too delicate at anything but super-large sizes.

Here’s how the final version compares. Shapes are (somewhat) simplified and regularized, and strokes are thickened up just a bit, so they can hold up at smaller sizes. Of course, Kyrios also has a lot more styles, including smaller optical sizes for actual text use. Go check out my website if you’d like to read more! Link in bio. :) by @arrowtype

A few weeks ago, I presented a talk on line metrics at the Typographics TypeLab conference. Their live stream only stays up for a few days, so I have now re-recorded the talk and published it on my own channel. Yesterday, I presented at the @typographicsnyc TypeLab! I shared a research deep-dive on how to set the default line heights in fonts. (It sounds boring and easy, but as with most things in font design, it’s more complex than you might think!) You can find my talk on the TypeLab livestream replay, for only a day or two. (Link on the 2026 TypeLab schedule website.) I’ll also try to make a version for my YouTube channel, soon.

AT Name Mono v1 is now live! Find on ArrowType.com and at @futurefonts. This update extends the weight range all the way from Black to Thin, adds a full set of code ligatures and box drawing glyphs, and brings in many subtle improvements made along the way. For the past couple of years, I have used this font (almost) every day as a font engineer, in the scripting and work around building and fixing fonts. That, plus a lot of focused design and testing work, led to the form it has today.
