Artist of the Week: Jordan Casteel

I’m drawn to the way @jordanmcasteel captures the people, places and details of everyday life, using bold colour and expressive brushwork to make ordinary moments feel extraordinary.

Alongside her celebrated portraits, Casteel has been painting flowers, exploring the connections between gardening, care and creativity. I love the idea that these floral paintings are a kind of self-portrait—another way of expressing something personal through the act of looking and making.

Her work reminds me that painting can be both an observation of the world around us and a reflection of our own experiences.

Casteel’s exhibition Winter Sun opens at @thaddaeusropac in Paris on 19 October and runs until 23 December 2026. It brings together new portraits, landscapes and botanical paintings.

Curious to find out more about this artist, or just want to talk about art? I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to get in touch.

What caught my eye this week: Anish Kapoor at the Hayward Gallery

I’ve admired @anish.kapoor work for many years, and seeing his work at the Royal Academy back in 2009 is one exhibition that has stayed with me.

His work has a remarkable ability to challenge how we see and experience space. From mirror-polished sculptures that distort our reflections to seemingly bottomless voids and intense fields of colour, the exhibition plays with perception in ways that are both disorientating and mesmerising.

Filling @hayward.gallery with monumental sculptures and paintings, Kapoor creates an experience that feels immersive, unsettling and full of wonder.

A fascinating opportunity to experience the work of an artist who continues to push the boundaries of sculpture.

On until 18 October at the Hayward Gallery, London.

Artist of the Week: Kate Friend

I first saw @kate_friend work at @lyndsey_ingram and was immediately drawn to it. Months later, I’m still thinking about the photographs.

Her series ‘There Are Always Flowers For Those Who Want To See Them’ features single wildflowers photographed at sites across southern Europe associated with Marian apparitions.

I love the simplicity of these photographs. Each flower is isolated against a coloured backdrop, turning something very familiar into something unexpected and almost otherworldly.

There is something beautiful and quiet about them, but also a sense of mystery. They make you stop and really look at something you might otherwise overlook.

The title comes from Henri Matisse’s 1947 book Jazz—a phrase that feels particularly fitting for a series about noticing beauty in the everyday.

Prints range from approximately £4,000–£9,500, depending on size.

What caught my eye this week: Mary West’s studio

I love seeing the little details of an artist’s working space — especially how they keep and organise their paints. There’s something so satisfying about seeing the tools behind the work.

And there’s a little more to come from @marywestpaintings… 👀

I’m planning something very exciting in her studio soon. More details to follow, so stay tuned.

Artist of the Week: Elise Ansel

I’m really drawn to @eliseansel paintings, particularly her incredible brushstrokes and use of colour.

Ansel takes inspiration from Old Master paintings and translates them into energetic, gestural abstraction. What I love is that you can often sense the original painting underneath the abstraction, even when you can’t quite place it.

I find myself looking at the colours, movement and layers of paint, while trying to work out what the inspiration might have been. It’s a really enjoyable way of looking at art history—and at painting itself.

Her work is represented by Cadogan Gallery in London.

Works range from approximately $3,750–$24,000, depending on size and work.

What caught my eye this week: Clare Woods at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

I’ve admired @clarewoodsstudio work for a while, so seeing this new body of work in the beautiful setting of @pitzhanger was a real treat.

For this exhibition, Woods was drawn to Sir John Soane’s legacy, responding to the architecture and the extraordinary effects of light within Pitzhanger.

Pitzhanger was designed by Soane as a country retreat — a place for entertaining and architectural experimentation. Clare reflects on how those intentions remain present in the building, its gardens and its history, with recurring subjects including planters, glasshouses and stained glass connecting the paintings to the space around them.

Her still-life paintings also evoke 17th-century Dutch painting, where blossoming and withering flowers remind us of the passage of time and the transience — as well as the beauty — of life.

I highly recommend a visit.

On until 8 November at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.

Artist of the Week: Jessie Chaney

I’ve known @jessiechaneyphoto since we did our Master’s together, so it’s particularly lovely to share her work here.

Jessie’s photography is a poetic investigation into forgotten and transitional spaces—those marked by time, abandonment and the quiet residue of human presence.

I love the way she finds beauty in unexpected places, capturing overlooked details, natural light and fleeting moments that give a place its atmosphere and character.

Her photographs are beautiful, and she’s also a wonderful person—which makes sharing her work even more special.

Works range from $2,650–$8,600, depending on size.

Artist of the Week: Steen Foege

I love the landscapes of Danish artist @foegepaintings

His paintings aren’t really about depicting a landscape as it appears, but about how a place can feel—dreamed, remembered and experienced emotionally. And I’m particularly drawn to the unexpected neon colours that run through his landscapes. They aren’t colours we necessarily see in nature, yet somehow they feel completely natural within these imagined places.

There is something very calm and atmospheric about the work. They feel like little spaces to pause and look.

And, as part of making collecting art feel a little less intimidating, I’m going to start including prices where I can. Steen’s paintings range from approximately £650–£7,000, depending on size.

There’s something so satisfying about seeing a piece of art in situ.

This photograph by @bonjourlatour now has a home with a client, and seeing it on their wall makes me so happy — especially knowing how excited they are to keep discovering and collecting more art.

For me, this is one of the best parts of being an art advisor: helping someone find a piece that feels right for them, seeing it become part of their home, and hopefully sparking the desire to keep looking.

Because once you start, it’s hard to stop. 😉

Artist of the Week: Cynthia Daignault

I’m really drawn to @cynthia_daignault paintings.

I particularly love her landscapes seen through windows—the frame becomes part of the composition, separating us from the view while also drawing us into it.

Daignault disassembles the monumental scale of traditional history painting in her intimate, episodic paintings, often considering the American landscape as a witness to history.

There is something beautiful and contemplative about these works. She uses light, time and observation to make us look at the landscape in a different way.

Daignault’s work is currently on view at the ICA Boston in Cynthia Daignault: Valley through January 18, 2027.

Artist of the Week: Yayoi Kusama

I’ve seen Yayoi Kusama’s work in exhibitions around the world, and they are always such fun. Her installations are immersive, playful and completely unforgettable.

But there is so much more to Kusama’s practice than the iconic polka dots and Infinity Rooms. Across an extraordinary career, she worked in painting, sculpture, performance, installation, film, fashion, literature and design—continually pushing the possibilities of what art could be.

With the recent news of her death at 97, the art world has lost one of the defining artists of the contemporary era. She continued to paint until her final days.

A truly remarkable legacy.
