✨ We are delighted to start our 2026/2027 programme with a residency in collaboration with @culturlanndoire and with Donegal performance artist @rebecca.properly
During her three-month residency, Rebecca will develop an evolving, process-driven project exploring language, etymology, and translation.

📚 Rebecca will use the library at Cultúrlann and engage in the established conversation circles to delve into the interests that guide her art-making and allow her to explore how words and meanings shift across contexts, revealing layers of shared human experience.

👉🏻 This residency is part of HEARTLANDS, Art Arcadia’s nomadic programme of artist residencies and social practices supported by @thenationallottery through the @artscouncilni

Carving

Years ago, I went to a percussion show by Tibetan monks who were raising funds for their community.
I bought this necklace. It is carved from Yak bone, and the carvings depict the Ashtamangala, which are the sacred Eight Auspicious Symbols of Himalayan and Tibetan Buddhism. Pieces like this are traditionally carved to serve as portable spiritual toolkits meant to bring protection, good fortune, and blessings to the wearer.

Amber

According to the National Museum of Ireland
"Amber necklaces were worn as jewellery during the Bronze Age, most likely symbolising a person of high status within the community."

These earrings are not Amber, but plastic replica. I found them in an Oxfam shop the day of the performance. My Polish friend told me Amber protects so I wore these in the performance to protect me from self doubt.

Crash, as in system crash

Sounds a bit like 'briseadh' broken. And I was..I had to post this again because something happens with Instagram and Android as your text can get deleted when you post.

I can't remember what I wrote because just after the performance I completely crashed. I put everything into this piece. It was and is a big deal to me. Afterwards I went to dance class, and the next day at work I felt like I had a hangover from hell. Headache, nausea, sneezing, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, photosensitivity, blurry vision.

It turns out I had a virus of some kind. I tried to push through but I had nothing left in me. I went to see the doctor on Monday and got the very first sick note of my life.

I have been very very unwell before but I've never ever gotten time off. Completely off work. There have been times when I was so sick but I somehow caught up on all the commitments and responsibilities as soon as I possibility could.

This time I listened to my own advice and took it easy.

Tóg go bog é - Take it easy

That's the title of this project. I have been doing anything but taking it easy so far. But now, even though it's not in my nature, I am going to go easy, softly, gentle, with kindness to myself and to my family because life is not about going at breakneck speed constantly.

Also, I'm going to be moving from Instagram to the Art Arcadia website blog section soon. Watch this space for links

widdershins or withershins or widdersyns
Means moving in an anticlockwise direction , the opposite being Deasil or sunwise

If moving clockwise (deasil/sunwise) binds, tightens, and protects our reality, then moving leftward does the exact opposite. It "slacks" the barrier between worlds, wearing the veil thin enough to step through.Traditionally, moving clockwise binds energy, creates protection, and builds structures. Moving counter-clockwise does the exact opposite—it is used for releasing, and breaking down barriers.
Radical Physics and Spatial Metaphors, sometimes non-fiction philosophical essays or science articles use "widdershins" and "slacking" as a metaphor for entropy or space-time manipulation. In physics, if you want to undo a knot, reverse a vortex, or create a structural vacuum, you must apply force exactly opposite to the system's natural, tight rotation.

Research by Martha McCulloch shared with me in reference to this project

Tessellation

A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps.

The tiles are made of handmade paper, which I made on a trampoline, using turmeric to dye the pulp yellow 💛

The sheets will be used in a participatory performance at Cultúrlann on the autumn equinox, Wednesday 23rd September at 4.40pm

The tessellation is installed in my studio at Guildhall Taphouse Studios, which will be open from 6-9pm on Culture Night, Friday 18th September.

Interval between showers

I'm beginning to believe that words are my second language and that, in fact, I understand the world firstly through my body.
I make. I am a maker. When I make my body can help me to make sense of what I'm experiencing.
I make paper because it gives me the time to create a space where, at some point, I may make a mark, a drawing, writing,or message that will be shared with others. Sometimes, the paper itself it the message.
Sometimes, there is no message. There is just time and process. All we have is time.

Translate

Whilst looking through the library at Cultúrlann I came across a book on Russian language.
I didn't expect there to be a book that translated from Irish language to Russian. Its title is Labhair Rúisis liom which means speak to me in Russian and it was published in 1985 by Garry Bannister.

He
"...established the first Modern Irish language department in Russia..."

"Known primarily as a lexicographer, he compiled the first ‘Russian-Irish Dictionary’ in 1983 and ‘The Learner's Dictionary’ in 2008. ‘The Irish-English Thesaurus', the result of 40 years of study and research and published by New Island in 2023, is recognised as his magnum opus."

I had no idea there was an Irish language dept in Moscow .
In an Irish Times article he wrote:

All languages are in essence a symbiotic relationship similar to a fish and the water it lives in. The water gives the fish its freedom but the fish also has to maintain certain characteristics in order to live in that water. Learning a new language is like a fish that has been transformed into a bird. The bird is still living in the same universe of planets and stars, but oh how different it all is! As it flies freely through the air it can feel the wind in its feathers, see beautiful sunsets and enjoy a totally different life experience to the fish it once was in the water-world below.

I've listened to Jhumpa Lahiri's book about choosing to learn and write in Italian. It's an amazing feat. I can't imagine the dedication and persistence and strength it requires.

I'm just posting this here to remind myself to consider my excitement around languages and translation. Which I'm delighted to have the opportunity to ponder further thanks to this Art Arcadia residency.
