Christine Sweeney @__papd wins Robin Lawrence Open Art Prize in 2026 @glebeartshow

15 to 25 October 2026 @tramsheds

In the 2026 Glebe Art Show, the $3,000 Robin Lawrence Open Art Prize went to Sydney-based photographer and photo-embroidery artist Christine Sweeney, whose practice bridges photography and textile arts. In this work, which draws on Adelaide artist Peter Drew’s AUSSIE posters, Khazoom Coory and Bella Singh – their images drawn from the National Archive of Australia – sit side by side on a brick wall. Where the posters themselves are vulnerable to the elements or vandals, the considered and permanent hand embroidery offers a quiet and considered permanence.

Art Almanac October 2026 is now on sale with @justenewilliams on the cover.

This time in Art Almanac are works weighted in postwar diaspora, the photographic image, disaster and mourning, and national myths. Bronwyn Watson selects a 1962 Eva Kubbos screenprint that combines, to paraphrase NGA’s Rebecca Edwards, childhood memories of a stark Lithuanian landscape, impressions of Australia, and abstract expressionism. On the mythic scale, Victoria Hynes previews Nolan: Origins via a sit down with AGNSW curator Denise Mimmocchi ahead of its opening. Two up brings Rebecca Hastings’s paintings on the uncanny with cues from Goya alongside Annika Romeyn’s works created from a visit to Antarctica; wildly different subject matter – Emma-Kate Wilson finds common ground through the maker’s mark. Finally, Sasha Grishin takes the time to mourn the passing of the almost-two-decade National Photographic Portrait Prize with a celebration of the standouts of its final run. Plus, we have our national guide to exhibitions and awards, and the latest artist opportunities and services.

Art Almanac | Australia’s leading monthly guide to “what’s on” in the arts: exhibitions, events, workshops, open studios, artist opportunities, art awards and services. October 2026 features $395k+ in art prizes/funding, 650+ galleries, and 370+ artists, both emerging and established.

Opening tomorrow: Cavitation by @izabelapluta__studio @thelockupartspace until 31 January 2027

For Izabela Pluta, who left Poland in 1986, place is always relational – through encounter, migration, and movement. Across moving image, photography, sculpture, sound, and textile, this cocommission between partnering institutions in Australia and Poland moves between the port towns of Newcastle and Szczecin; presenting a constellation of material forms, creating sensory encounters and bodily echoes of oceanic movements and planetary orbits – water becomes both atmospheric field and temporal force.

The Quiet Life @loaf.gallery until 27 September

The Quiet Life explores the beauty, stillness, and quiet significance of everyday experience. Bringing together artists whose practices are grounded in observation, atmosphere, and intimacy, the exhibition considers the moments that often pass unnoticed; familiar landscapes, domestic rhythms, changing light, remembered places, quiet interiors, gardens, fragments, and patterns. Revealing the subtle poetry of the everyday.

Dedication to focused, intimate dialogue, the gallery’s presentation brings together two distinct Australian practices: the graphite and ink drawings of Kim Anderson, and the paper sculptures and large-scale photography of Stuart McLachlan and Simon Cardwell.

Bodies of work rooted in ecological grief, yet they approach it from opposite poles. Anderson moves inward, into the body and the psyche, rendering the human experience of planetary crisis as something felt in muscle and nerve. McLachlan and Cardwell move outward, into the shared environment and the dwindling number of species that inhabit it.

The presentation offers no resolution, but holds two truths at once: that we are implicated in what is being lost, and that we are also capable of what is required to return it.

Fifteen contemporary Australian artists were invited by Arthouse Gallery on two journeys to the remote Fowlers Gap Research Station in northwest NSW – in 2024 and 2026.

Inspired by the region’s rich artistic and cultural legacy and driven by a profound love for the land, a deepening connection to First Nations history, and a growing concern for our changing climate, the artists entered into dialogue with the landscape and with each other, creating works that capture both resilience and vulnerability of this extraordinary, ancient environment.

Matthew Hurdle’s new handmade paper works for PARKER Contemporary transform worn clothing and hessian into tactile surfaces, exploring memory, devotion, and vulnerability. In Self Portrait {when my hands relax I can sleep}, 2026, a worn black T-shirt is pulped and reformed into paper, turning an everyday garment associated with rest into a meditation on ritual, embodiment, and accumulated experience.

The presentation also includes work by Melissa J. Harvey, Ross Woodrow, Chris Hagen, Matthew Newkirk, and Alethea Richter.

Appearing at Sydney Contemporary for the third time, Australian photo artist Luke Hardy presents new and recent work exploring dream and legend. kitsune-bi foxfires #XX, 2020, an image from his acclaimed ‘FOXFIRES’ series, draws on Japanese folklore, depicting foxes and courtly figures in mysterious nocturnal encounters.

Across Hardy’s photographic practice, the boundary between reality and imagination remains fluid, inviting viewers into richly atmospheric worlds shaped by mythology, storytelling, and the uncanny.
