Inward looking - I

Well, we’ve made it. It’s the last day of @artquestlondon #30works30days and the last of the 30 triptychs I’ve made for it (one of which appeared here but not on the Artquest site thanks to me missing the 11.30pm cut-off). Today’s prompt is to mirror or reverse my art work which is fine with me as I’m happy to be given the excuse to play with the aesthetics of symmetry and mirroring by reversing one picture to make three. There is a layering of a slide and a photographic print in the making of the source image as well as a digital layering to make the middle image. And there’s a camera in the frame so the work also talks about photography and looking in that way.

Inward looking - II

Well, we’ve made it. Penultimate attempt (hazy memory) - I

The end is nigh, apparently. At least, that’s the prompt for day 29 of @artquestlondon #30works30days. As usual, my work has been made with barely a passing connection to the prompt but the prompt seems troubling today and when I think about my piece in relation to it, I can’t quite decide whether the strange colours that come from layering one of the stranger’s slides with a holiday photograph taken by my mother are cheerful, eerie or menacing. This is a hazy memory for uncertain times.

At a secret location - I

The prompt for day 28 of @artquestlondon #30works30days is to share a secret which I’m very happy to do: the secret is that this wasn’t the piece I intended to make today but with the deadline approaching and images not syncing between my phone and laptop I decided it’d have to do. So, despite intending to make a series of blurry, colourful landscapes, I’ve ended up with some minor characters caught in the background of a photograph taken who knows where (probably France).

If my laptop and phone reconcile their differences, maybe I’ll make the triptych I intended to make today.

Distant memory of summer - I

The prompt for day 27 of @artquestlondon #30works30days is to make art with a loved one. I’m not doing that directly but having dug out some of my mother’s old holiday pictures earlier this month, I’m going with one of those today with a triptych of very out of focus photographs of a picture taken, I think, in France several decades ago. It’s hard to read the resulting pictures as anything other than hazy abstracts which feels appropriate given my mother’s failing eyesight (although as images they are very different to the way she would see the photograph, especially in terms of the intensity of colour).
