Collecting London Lockdown

"Containment.

A plant in a cardboard box. Ordered from an online garden centre, this ceanothus in a cardboard box sums up lockdown for me in many ways. In part, it's about how grateful I am to have a garden. It's something I've long taken for granted (largely leaving the work for others) but this year the importance of just sitting out has come into sharp focus and with it the effects (both positive and negative) of the neglect the garden has been subject to. Mending what is broken and filling in the gaps to make the space both greener and safer has become a priority. The image is also about containment though and the constraints of lockdown. The walls of the box constrict the plant as the walls of the house constrict me. We both want to break out. The picture is also about change. I've shopped online for years (my first online supermarket order was more than a decade ago) but I have a good local garden centre so I've never bought plants online before. Finally, the shadowy nature of the picture and its shallow depth of field make the image hard to read and that sense of visual confusion acts as a metaphor for the very real confusion we are experiencing: we know things have changed but we're still not quite sure what we're faced with, even the most mundane things have become oddly unfamiliar. This is a strange new world and there is a lot to get used to."
