yeah it's basic but it's time we get it done. vote like your life depends on it, cuz it does, and let's get these fuckers out, especially the orange one. i had the idea for this in his first term but just never got it together but i recently saw some stickers that were similar so decided to revive my old design and tweak it. i have stickers of the same for sale on my own website and the shirts are on bonfire - links to both in my profile or via my site which is spelled out in my IG name. #LFG #impeachconvictremove #vote #accountabilityiscoming #fucktrump by @artbymagsdotcom
y’all, I’m really stuck on the cats. I just keep making more of them. I had this pink hat that I caught last year at the Iris parade. it had a heart on it with Iris written in the middle of it. I probably wasn’t ever gonna wear this hat in its original state. but something just told me to take out my acrylic markers and start playing and I fucking love it. I wish I could replicate this, but without a pre-printed hat with a heart on it I don’t know how I would do it. I will experiment and see if I can use gesso or white paint as an underlayer, but the screen printing really worked great to paint over. now I just have to figure out what I could possibly wear that would allow me to don a bright pink hat. 😂 #yougotthis #cat #hat #truckerhat #pink by @artbymagsdotcom
sometimes you just gotta paint silly but reassuring cats. 😻 (these aren’t completely done yet - need some small details and finishing coats. they are all 6x6 inches on flat wood panels. there’s a few more still in process. not sure on pricing yet. more will be revealed.) #cats #catpaintings #folkart by @artbymagsdotcom
i have been working on this on and off for a few days. this design was originally a linocut; i made it for my beloved @bcswdebra for her birthday a few years ago. but the block i used was a cheapie pink soft block and i had a really hard time getting consistent good prints with it, no matter what type of ink or paper i used. a few here and there but not consistent. i've given up at this point. so i had the idea to digitize it from a photo of one of the good prints and do my photoshop magic on it to make it clean and crisp enough to cut on heat transfer vinyl while still retaining the hand-drawn and linocut look. (have i mentioned how wonderful @grrrlrob is for letting me use and house her cricut maker machine? i always wanted one and this has given me the opportunity to play with it a bit and i've cut many cardstock stencils with it and now vinyl stencils to silkscreen with. it's a brilliant machine, even if i do forget how to use it every time i turn it on. lol) i haven't screen printed anything for a while so it was fun to get back to that. i had a small blank screen from who knows where and it was the perfect size. the design is about 4x6" so prints perfectly on 5x7". i've accumulated several different shades of off-white/cream 5x7" watercolor and other nice print paper, plus had some random kraft cards in the right size. i did 10 of each of the watercolor papers (they are really thick with a nice texture, so printed great) and then a few of the others before i got tired and had made a big mess. they all turned out great! the design as-is is too small for tshirts or maybe even tote bags (i have a handful of blank totes) but if there's interest i can blow it up and cut another stencil. something to think about for the holidays. i guess it would be cooler if i could figure out what i'm doing wrong with the block printing but screen printing is really my happy place. it'd be fun to get some nice colored papers to print this on. #allactsofjoyareactsofresistance #joyisresistance #screenprinting #blockprinting #linocut by @artbymagsdotcom
when all else fails, paint #cats. 😻 been super unmotivated lately to work on abstract stuff so i just started painting cats. stay tuned to see how they turn out! by @artbymagsdotcom
not sure what motivated me to do this TODAY but it's been on my list for a while to do, as this design hasn't been available in a long time. so here ya go, for those who've asked. a classic artbymags tshirt design available once again. https://www.bonfire.com/an-army-of-lovers-cannot-fail/ you can find a lot of my shirt designs in my bonfire shop: https://www.bonfire.com/store/artbymags/ (this link is in my profile linktree) i am working on a few new ones, so hopefully those will be coming soon. stay tuned! #tshirts #printondemand #artbymags #anarmyofloverscannotfail #graphicdesign by @artbymagsdotcom
i hesitate to post these because they are just starts, but at the same time i want to celebrate that i've actually been working in the studio. the first one is a 12x12" wood panel that was a throwaway board that caught my eye and i've continued to add some layers of marks on tissue paper as collage. it's still a mess and not sure where it's going but i feel like it has energy. i like it so far. the second one is a 12x12" cheapy michael's stretched canvas that i started collaging on when i was working on the board books. there's too much going on and i know i need to edit some things out but i'm still playing with it. might need some layers of paint here and there. it amused me to put my cat Dusti in this one. the third one is a large 24x36" stretched canvas that i just pulled out on a whim to start working on. i have 3 of this size of canvas that i got on sale and they've been sitting in my studio screaming at me waiting for inspiration and i just decided to unwrap one and start playing on it. some base layers of housepaint, some random collage scraps for texture, some scribbles with the high flow acrylic paint. no idea where this one is going but i'm having fun with it, bit by bit. and the last one is a large 24x48" cradled panel that was originally some readymade store bought piece that someone gave me to work on a million years ago. it's been about 20 paintings since then so the layers of paint and collage on this one are thick. but every time i start working on it i get to a point where i am lost and don't know where to go with it and i just start over. so this time i stenciled "keep going" on it to remind me to just keep pushing forward past this messy middle phase where it feels like chaos and nothing makes sense and you don't know what to do with it. but you just gotta keep on responding to what's there. what i'm liking about it so far is the sort of darker and earthy tones and some of the texture and marks. i share these just as moments of my process. the big ones i've been working on steadily this past week; the small ones i have mostly just been pondering on. we'll see what happens! #artpractice #abstractart #studiolife #keepgoing #starts by @artbymagsdotcom
Over the past few days I worked on a fun little spray paint stencil project to decorate some cardboard boxes and make them eye-catching donation boxes for @elpueblonola's Back To School Drive. I had fun with some random stencils and had forgotten how much I love working with spray paint. The first box was already placed at @mojocoffeehouse on Magazine yesterday. Another will be placed out at @houndandfound in Metairie in the next few days. And there’s already a box at @oldroadcoffee. Thanks so much to these businesses for helping out! Go fill them up with goodies for the kids of New Orleans East - see the attached flyer for a list of items needed. (Also, I’m still looking for more large boxes to decorate and additional business locations to place them. Lemme know!) If you'd like to donate $$ towards this effort, scan the QR code in the attached flyers. #stencils #spraypaint #cardboard #backtoschooldrive #elpueblonola by @artbymagsdotcom
it’s been a minute since i worked on something creative all day. this isn’t mindblowing or anything but it was fun to just lose myself in collaging on this little board book and i’m happy with how it turned out. it’s an idea from @drewsteinbrecher that i’d been wanting to do for a while and goddess knows i’ve been hoarding random scraps and gelli prints for years so it feels good to use some of them. there’s no theme, i just did whatever felt right. and it felt really good! one thing i learned is that i really hate using gloss medium as my glue. i need to figure out something else next time. i really needed this today. my work schedule has been bananas and it’s not slowing down anytime soon so i’m glad i had time and motivation today to do this. #artpractice #collage #mixedmedia #gelliprint by @artbymagsdotcom
oh hi. it's been a minute. not sure why but for the past month i really haven't felt much like going into the studio, playing with paint or really any other art supplies. some days i try - i go in there and toodle around washing brushes, getting fresh water, cleaning, organizing, and by the time i'm done doing that, i'm over it. lol there was one day about a week ago i got my gelli plate out and played and i made this which quite pleased me. i had a cheap frame that just happened to be the right size and i used some tape to mount this print that is on simple copy paper to the included cardstock mat. looks pretty good for super cheap supplies! it's hanging now in my office. i don't know what's wrong with me. i think i got depressed when i realized that yet ANOTHER year has passed and i haven't entered the louisiana contemporary show, something i've wanted to do for like a decade and always have on my calendar but never end up feeling like i have anything "good" enough to enter when the deadline rolls around. the reality is whenever i DO have things that are "good" enough, i sell them right away cuz i'm always so desperate for money. i don't end up with a backlog of stuff that feels like it represents me as an artist, that i could enter into shows. but really, that's probably the real problem - that i still don't seem to know what exactly that would be, that style, that work. my output still feels all over the place. i'm great at making tshirt and sticker designs and fucking around with various printing techniques but none of it feels like it's something i'd want to enter into a show. and i have so many completed paintings and entire mixed media pieces constructed in my head but i don't ever seem to get around to physically making them. oh well. maybe next year. or some other show sometime. i guess it's back to the basics. back to trying to work in my journal every day. start there. see if i can get back into the habit of allowing my brain to let go and just play. by @artbymagsdotcom
couple of new/old pieces up in the webshop. first two are 12x12" on wood and the last is 14x14" on canvas. the first one i just finally completed after it's been sitting around my studio for the better part of a year waiting for final touches. i had to add a few more art mantras and give it a coat of gloss medium but it's ready to go now. yes it really is a weird off-white with a blue/green cast to it, cuz i did some glazes to make the white parts more interesting. it's kinda unusual but i like it. all that detail you see is carved in with an awl, into the paint and wood. the second one will look familiar as it was first a 2 page spread in my art journal, one of my daily 20 minute sessions that just came out unexpectedly. i decided i liked it enough to try to replicate it on wood. the result is kinda different - i again carved a lot of the details into the wood and paint with an awl and there was already a ton of texture on the board from previous layers. but i dunno, i kinda like the result. weird little creatures, blobs, aliens. maybe ghosts. the third one is an older canvas that i was never quite sure if i was done or not with it. it's been on my studio wall for a few years now and i like to look at it. i like the undulating blue line that goes across. i like the patchwork of pinks and oranges and greys that is the background, with random lines and textures. my eyes enjoy looking all over this canvas and appreciating all that goes into it. i hope yours do too. linktree with webshop link in my profile. or, ya know, artbymags.com. #abstractart #abstractpainting #acrylicpainting #texture #supportyourlocalartists by @artbymagsdotcom
this is one of my oldest print on demand tshirt designs and it hasn't been available for a while but i'm relaunching it. i've set the campaign to only be for 5 days so the shirts come faster. they'll still be available after this, i just won't make as much money from them as they'll be on demand. so if your old shirt is getting a little tattered like mine, now's the time to get a new one! or if you never got one before and always wanted to, here ya go! or maybe this is brand new to you. however you slice it, it's the perfect ode to the hallmark sound of new orleans. i'll be wearing mine out at jazz fest and pointing folks to this campaign to order. if you still wear your old one regularly and are stopped by people wanting to order, please send folks here! https://www.bonfire.com/last-night-a-brass-band-saved-my-life/ link in bio/linktree too. #tshirts #brassband #neworleans #jazzfest #secondline by @artbymagsdotcom
