“Cerulean Spiraled Kolibrifresser” 11” X 14” (27.94 cm X 35.56 cm) Acrylic on panel.

First, it was the squirrels in my garden. Then came the deer and the raccoons. The garden is finished for the summer, but now I’ve got these guys.

Damn.

“Illegal Parking” 20” X 20” (50.8 cm X 50.8 cm) Acrylic on canvas.

The best thing about what I do is that I get to build my own worlds. I build things and I stage them. Everything. Every little bit of it, from the top edge to the bottom, from the left edge to the right. If some of the stuff I make gets partially covered up with tree leaves and rust, so be it. If nobody got to look at my paintings, that still doesn’t take away from my experience of them. It’s my own little world and you’re invited to take a look at it.

To me, that’s what art is.

“Escape From Suburbia” 14” X 14” (35.56 cm X 35.56 cm) Acrylic on canvas.

I mentioned to a friend recently that sometimes, for inspiration, I will just draw, move the pencil around, sometimes even close my eyes while I do it. It’s just complete unconsciousness. I look at it and try to see if there is anything in this organic mess that I can do anything with. Sometimes, I will turn it, and there it is. This one got turned upside down before I saw it.

“Guess Who’s Coming For Dinner” 16” X 20” (40.64 cm X 50.8 cm) Acrylic on canvas.

Whenever the grandkids come over, we’ve got a folding table set up in the basement where we draw and paint together. Nothing fancy, cheap kids’ paint and a vast supply of typing paper. After I get them set up with the stuff they need, I’ll ask them, “Well, what should Opa paint?” Over half the time, I am tasked with making a monster. I made one and looked at it and thought it might qualify for a finished painting.

“Save Ten Bucks With Bendix Brakes” 30” X 16” (76.2 cm X 40.64 cm) Water-based inks on illustration board. Old illustration somewhere around late 80s, early 90s (?), for, yeah, well, Bendix brakes.

I have HUUUGE problem with deer in my garden this year. They are eating my cucumber and tomato plants, and I DON’T LIKE THAT. I bought some motion detecting alarms that make a nightmarish racket and light up like a French whorehouse when they go off. That’s helped a little bit. I’m still finding those chocolate covered raisins those ungulate bastards are shitting in my yard. I’ve been thinking about getting a rifle and shooting the sonsabitches. We do like deer meat. However, there is an elementary school behind us and I’m thinking the city might “get pissy” if I start doing that. They’re sooo sensitive about that kind of thing. Sheesh. So, for now it’s the alarms. Anybody got any suggestions?

“Tempest of the Plains” 15” X 30” (38.1 cm X 76.2 cm) Acrylic on canvas. Sixty years ago last April I saw my first tornado. I was in wood shop class at my junior high school in Overland Park, Kansas. I can’t remember the guy’s name who was standing there with me as we were gazing out the south-facing window. We were mesmerized. Ajax Powder Cleanser had a TV commercial in those days that said, “Ajax cleans like a white tornado.” This one was white, too, which made it all that more remarkable. It was white until it hit the tree line across the street. Once it hit the ground it became filthy brown. It traveled west to east and we knew it wasn’t going to hit the school. We’d have stayed there, gawking at it like a couple of idiots, but the shop teacher grabbed us by our collars and basically threw us into the hallway where the students were heading for the basement of the school at a brisk pace.

My friends and I walked home that day and were floored by the damage we had seen. The trees were filled with pink fiberglass insulation. Cars and lumber were strewn everywhere. I was particularly intrigued at the sight of grass that had been embedded into a plywood sign. Grass. TV news crews were there with their massive cameras on top of their vans adding to the spectacle of it all.

Amazingly, no one was killed or injured. Months later in June, Topeka, about 55 miles to the west, wasn’t so lucky. 17 people were killed and 500 were injured when a massive tornado clobbered the city. Five years later, the Fujita scale was developed to classify the strength of tornados. The Topeka tornado was rated an F5, the most powerful.

I’ve been fascinated with these things ever since.

I have donated my painting “Independence Avenue Bridge” to an organization called reStart. reStart is a non-profit group who seeks to end homelessness in Kansas City. On June 5th, they will be holding an art auction online and at the Leedy-Voulkos Gallery, 2012 Baltimore Ave. I’ve tapped my artist friends Mark Mohr and Lori Buntin and they were wonderful enough to come on board, as well. Plus, there will be many more artists who have donated their *original* art.

I first heard about reStart through a friend and learned about the people they had helped. What struck me was the fact that they were stable people who had gone through a perfect storm of shit and found themselves without shelter. Their stories were soul-crushing. They encountered things out of their control; accidents, medical issues, crime, divorce, any number of things they never saw coming. Most of these problems were multiple. It also dawned on me that this, of course, could happen to just about any one of us.

This is a great chance to get some amazing art and do something truly decent at the same time. To find out more about reStart, go to https://www.restartinc.org/

Early picture of my mom. Whatever artistic inclinations I got pretty much came from her genes. She gave me her worn and battered copy of “Figure Drawing” by Andrew Loomis. My dad, on the other hand, would draw faces on the women’s breasts in the book. I guess I can give him credit for other stuff. by @artbytomdotcom

Probably the best thing about living in the Kansas City Metro is the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. To hell with the Royals or the Chiefs, it is this place. For a metro area of this size to have an art museum of this caliber is truly amazing. Currently, there is a special exhibition of the work of Alphons Mucha.

Mucha was an illustrator who epitomized the Art Nouveau movement. I never really embraced Art Nouveau for my own style, but I really admire Mucha because of his abilities as a draftsman. There are painters and there are draftsmen. Even though I make paintings, I’ve always considered myself as a draftsman- a drawer. The paintings are just “colored drawings”.

If you’re in KC during this exhibition, I urge you to go see it. The guy was amazeballs.
