Throwback Thursdays | Conversations with Sam Dalrymple

In our conversation with Sam Dalrymple, we explored how his interest in South Asian heritage began with photographing historic libraries in Oxford and grew into a journey documenting forgotten monuments, abandoned gurdwaras, and the histories held within them.

In 2018, he co-founded Project Dastaan, a peace-building initiative that uses virtual reality to reconnect Partition survivors with their ancestral homes and communities across the India–Pakistan border.

The project later expanded into Lost Migrations, an animated series on which he worked with Puffball Studios in Pakistan and Spitting Image studios in India, exploring lesser-known stories of displacement across South Asia.

Sam’s work reminds us that heritage is more than architecture: it is the memory, identity, and human experience embedded in the places we leave behind.

Revisit this conversation with us as we reflect on the power of storytelling to preserve histories and reconnect communities.

Manmeet K Walia & Zahra Khan

Manmeet K Walia speaks with Art Divvy’s creative Director Zahra Khan about her curatorial focus, her recent exhibitions and what drives her.

Manmeet K. Walia is an independent curator and cultural advocate based in London, specialising in South Asia and the diaspora. Her curatorial practice is driven by a commitment to cultivating inclusive dialogue, amplifying marginalised voices, and creating transnational narratives that transcend rigid national identities. Walia’s work spans curating exhibitions, public programming, and institutional collaborations, and she also teaches at the University of the Arts London.

She co-curated (Un)Layering the Future Past of South Asia, an international exhibition at SOAS Gallery, London (2025), and We Sinful Women: The Library Project at SOAS Library in 2025, both with Salima Hashmi. Together, they also worked on Assassins and Lovers, a rehang of the South Asian Permanent Collection for an indefinite run at Cartwright Hall, Bradford Museums and Galleries- one of the oldest museums in the United Kingdom. Walia led The Library Project, an evolving curatorial initiative that interrogates knowledge production within institutional libraries. Her practice extends strongly into public engagement, having developed talks, tours, screenings and panel discussions alongside exhibitions for diverse audiences, including school groups, university students, academics, collectors, curators and the wider public.

Alongside curating, she writes regularly on contemporary art and visual culture. Her work has appeared in publications including Art India, Take on Art, Contemporary Art Society, Khaleej Times and other cultural platforms. Walia was recognised in 23 Women of Excellence by Women Listed in India in 2023.

Martand Khosla & Zahra Khan

Artist, Architect and academic Martand Khosla speaks with Art Divvy’s Creative Director Zahra Khan about his diverse practice.

Martand Khosla (b.1975) is an artist and an architect based in New Delhi, India.

Khosla’s art practice challenges urban and historical concepts by distorting the very modes of habitation. His sculptural language of distortion, destruction, and motion of quotidian objects create new lenses through which urbanization may be understood and critiqued. Resistance and social frameworks remain central to his practice as he critiques the very foundations of 20th century urban planning.

Khosla runs an architectural studio, RKDS in Delhi and teaches a studio on informal urbanism at CEPT university in Ahmedabad.

Daniyal Ahmed speaks with Art Divvy’s creative director Zahra Khan

Daniyal Ahmed is a multi-instrumentalist musician, anthropologist, producer, and curator from Karachi. He runs an independent record label called honiunhoni and is an integral part of the All Pakistan Music Conference, Karachi. His work has been featured in The Guardian, BBC, Pitchfork, Songlines Magazine, The Wire Magazine, Dust-to-Digital, NTS Radio, WDR, MDR-Kultur and several other publications, radio stations, and media outlets globally.

He is currently a researcher and lecturer teaching music/musicology courses at the University of Hildesheim in Germany and is also affiliate faculty at the Habib University in Karachi where he was previously an Assistant Professor of Practice in the department of Comparative Humanities. Ahmed’s primary instrument is the Bansuri (South Asian Bamboo Flute). He is a disciple of Ustad Salamat Hussain with whom he continues to learn the art of Raag Sangeet (South Asian ‘Classical’ Music). Due to his long term research and production projects with folk artists from various regions in Pakistan, he has had the great fortune and blessing to learn the intricacies of Sindhi and Balochi folk styles, directly from the greatest living masters of these traditions. Other than flutes, he also plays lutes, primarily the Afghan Rubab and the Baloch Damburag. Since 2023, Ahmed has been touring with the Baloch Benju maestro, Ustad Noor Bakhsh. He has performed at major festivals and prestigious venues across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, including Glastonbury, Roskilde, WOMEX, Fusion Festival, Rudolstadt, Le Guess Who?, Barbican Center, South Bank Center, and many others.
