Clay doesn’t care about your age, your excuses, or your “I’m not creative.”

It only asks one thing: show up. 🏺

Come with cold hands and a nervous smile. Leave with a masterpiece (or at least something that looks great from the left side). Either way, you’ll leave with clay under your nails and a very good story.

Is this really how art is meant to be considered?

Art is not merely what the eyes see
it is what the soul understands.

this exhibition met me in a state of tahayyur.
where the qawwali speaks of losing the self to intensity, Faceless showed how history, power, and violence erase it altogether.

Earlier this month I wrote about ‘Faceless | Baysoorat’ a solo show by Khadim Ali (@khadim96), for @thealephreview—a remarkable retrospective curated by @zahrafkhan of @artdivvy at @comomuseum. Link in bio to read my musings.

Khadim’s tapestries are alive with the songs of Ferdowsi, Attar and Hafez; they house his memories, but also numerous mythological creatures. In the many fabulist tableaux that play out on his woven and paper stages, demons sit back and chuckle at chaos they’ve caused (or are perhaps simply laughing at human folly); Simurghs and dragons glide across battlefields; winged angels rescue animals; imperialist clowns have their comeuppance and through it all, children dream and hope.

My favourite piece was the diptych in the first three slides—the shipwrecked demons, a commentary on the immigration and refugee crisis, arrested me at first glance. I remember dragging everyone away from the tapestries to look at it during opening night. It’s kept me in its thrall every time I’ve been to revisit the show.

Khadim’s urgent, melodic and intelligent show is up till 30th June at COMO Museum and is free to visit.

🖌️

After the fall of the Bamiyan Buddhas, the hollowed niches became more than absence, they became a wound etched into the breast of the mountain, a silence that bleeds across generations, into the hearts of those who once imagined them, shaped them with calloused hands, and offered their breath in devotion beneath their gaze. At Lower Mall Road, the Kim’s Gun stood garlanded, draped in symbols of triumph. Around it, a celebration stirred, voices rising not only in reverence for power, but in praise for destruction, for the erasure of what once stood sacred. There, among the ornaments and laughter, I felt the ache of dissonance. For I remembered those who once journeyed from Bamiyan and Kabul to Lahore, not with fire or fury, but with ink and dreams, to study, to question, to create.
