Join us on 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟵𝘁𝗵 to celebrate ArteEast’s 23rd year of presenting and amplifying creative voices from the SWANA region and diasporas, with special guest 𝗠𝗖 𝗔𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗡𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗶 (@afeefness), while raising our glasses to toast to this year’s incredibly inspiring honorees 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶 (@monachalabi) and 𝗛𝗿𝗮𝗴 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 (@hragv).

What’s on this 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 with ArteEast.

✦✦ 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟴, 𝟳–𝟴:𝟯𝟬𝗣𝗠: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗠𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗦: 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 at 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝘂𝘀. A 45 minute performance by Rawya El Chab weaving together 𝘓𝘶𝘭𝘢 19/85, 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, and 𝘐𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭 into a new theatrical composition. Three stories set across pivotal moments in modern Lebanese history are interrupted by two allegorical vignettes — one drawn from the past, one imagined from the future — tracing the hopes, contradictions, and collapse of the Lebanese left through one family. Performance followed by Artist Talk. Presented as part of ArteEast’s HIKAYAT performance series and the 2026 Immigrant Artist Biennial.

✦ New Artist Spotlight: 𝗥𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗮 𝗘𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗯

Check out the interview with Rawya El Chab, a New York City-based theater maker and storyteller who weaves together archival research, poetry, and audiovisual technology to amplify voices from history’s margins. Her recent productions include “Lula 19/85 & the Pearl of the Bekaa” at La MaMa and “Crossing the Water” at The Brick.

Speaking with ArteEast, El Chab reflects on her practice, saying, “I am a storyteller.” Whether she is combing through archives or interviewing people, she sets official records against collective memory, countering the erasure of Lebanon’s past.

Her new performance, The Immortals: Three stories. One unfinished history, is presented by ArteEast on October 8 at 7pm at Brooklyn Art Haus. Presented in partnership with the Immigrant Artist Biennial, this 45-minute work in progress follows one family across modern Lebanese history and the collapse of the Lebanese left through storytelling, shadow puppetry, projection, and spatial sound. Part of our HIKAYAT performance series, it will be followed by a conversation with the artist.

Artist/Hikayat Spotlight: Rawya El Chab is a New York based Lebanese theater maker. Her work transforms archival research, poetry, and memories of historical events into living narratives using shadow puppetry, projection, and sound.

Premiering at The Immigrant Artist Biennial, the piece is an amalgamation of her trilogy on the Lebanese left developed with Jesse Freedman, Meta-Phys Ed.

✦ New Artist Spotlight: 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗮𝗱 𝗘𝗹𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘆

Check out the interview with Fouad Elkoury, photographer, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation. Growing up in 1960s Beirut, Elkoury picked up his father's camera and began taking pictures, an instinct that grew into a body of work spanning civil war, displacement, and political uprising across the Middle East. Born in 1952 in Paris, his early photography became the landmark books Beyrouth Aller-Retour and Beirut City Centre.

In conversation with ArteEast team members Lila Nazemian and Thalia Bassim, Elkoury reflects on the relationship between his photography and films, saying, “I think there must be one word that links them, and it is humanity.” Across both media, he considers the human element to be at the center of his work, whether through still images or moving pictures.

His retrospective, streaming on ArteArchive starting September 15, gathers eleven films made between 1998 and 2021, including an ongoing trilogy of experimental letter films, soon to be joined by the forthcoming Lettres à Etel, moving between Lebanon, Palestine, and Turkey through photography, text, and sound.
