Last night we met with Warriors!
I’m extremely proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to capture their portraits and help amplify their voices 🙏🏾 Sickle cell warriors are people living with Sickle cell anaemia the most common genetic disease in the world. 🌎

These sickle cell warriors are championing awareness and change within the health care services and other sectors to improve their access to specialist care and to reduce the chances of more people being born with this condition. Sickle cell warriors can find themselves having a crisis (a painful episode) at any time often ending up in being admitted to hospital and their lives grinding to a halt till they recover. It’s an invisible disease, so they can often find their condition being doubted and disbelieved!

The first step in helping to Shape the Change is to make yourself aware of this condition and share your knowledge with others. Please check out Shapethechange.org to learn more.

💛 to my fellow creatives involved in this project @dhagren @remybourdeau @jakegreenstudio @jaffalondon @sarah.o.keeffe_ @akajamesbaines

My Book - Fear & Dreams! Is finally here! 📖 🙌

Creating this Book of migrant and refugee stories has been my greatest privilege and a beautiful struggle. It started with a desire to tell a single humanising migrant story of a man in Moscow city in 2012, to balance what I felt was a very one sided and mostly negative narrative of the migrant and refugee experience. I had no idea it would evolve to be a book when I started all those years ago, but today I’m humbled and grateful for the support and trust many of you have shown in me as the project naturally evolved to serve as best it could. #Startbeforeyouareready

God, friends, family, clients, supporters, mentors, organisational partners and those who bravely shared their stories with me from all around the world - thank you! 😉 Your encouragement, connections and mentorship have helped me make this Dream a reality!

Books for kickstarter pledges are being sent out next week!! 🙏🏾

*Books are on sale from the link in my bio 👆👆

Thank YOU all again!

Global politics is felt most by young people in the world’s most vulnerable nations, who are just hoping for a future.

Photographer Arteh Odjidja joins Them Frames That Make Us to share how global politics shapes everyday life for the younger generation in vulnerable nations, and the stories he has made across the African continent. He also shares a photo of his late father that he holds close to his heart.

Full episode out now. Link in bio.

The further down this road I go, the more I crave simplicity. What matters most is already close. My camera lets me collect the world, knowing I own none of it. I own nothing but my intention.

This photograph was taken on a street in east London.

I walked up to a complete stranger, made a polite interruption and asked if I could take her portrait, and few moments later we made this portrait together.

No studio. No lighting setup. No prior relationship.

Just presence, intention, and knowing how to connect.

That’s exactly what I’m going to teach you on 26th and 27th June in London.

Quick Reminder:
Black and White Street Portraits is a two-day masterclass for photographers who are ready to stop consuming and start creating. To find their voice. To overcome the fear of the stranger. To come away with a body of work that is unmistakably theirs.

Places are strictly limited to 12.
Early bird tickets are available till the 12th of June!

£495 for both days. Link in bio to secure your place.

Three pieces from my Stranger in Moscow series have been acquired by the @mocpchi Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago for their permanent collection, to be held, studied, and seen by generations I’ll never meet. I did not expect to feel so validated and humbled by this but I am deeply honoured by the request and acquisition.

This work was born in the early twenty tens. I was a young Black British photographer in Russia, a stranger in every sense of the word, unknown to the city, and in some ways, still unknown to myself. That is where the work began. Not in confidence, but in the searching. The tension of being seen without being understood became the only honest place to start.

Fear and Dreams. The book. Everything that followed. It all lives in that tension.

Those images were about faith, defiance and dignity, which I believe are the answer to so much of what we seem to fear. A refusal, quiet and absolute, to be shaped by anyone else’s idea of who you are. That refusal has never left me. It runs through everything I make.

I am grateful to @ozwald_boateng for the spark, to @sara_shamsavari_studio and @apshantology for believing in it early, and to everyone whose energy is woven into these images.

If you are building something, if you are searching for your voice in a world that will offer you many voices that are not yours, I offer this not as instruction, but as invitation. Stand in your truth. Your truth is how you see things, rendered in a way that allows another human being to stand where you stand, and feel what you feel. As an artist this is such an important gift to endeavour to give.

We create in our moment. But the work, if it is honest, outlives the moment.

This weekend I’ll be speaking at @photonorthfest in Leeds at 3pm on Saturday 14th March and exhibiting prints from my Rise for Bayelsa photographic project.

I’ll also be sharing from my long-term migration project Fear & Dreams, a body of work that has allowed me to meet and photograph young migrants and refugees across different parts of the world, listening to their stories, honouring their dignity, and asking what it really means to be seen.

My talk is titled:
Why Your Story Matters: Creating Photography That Moves People

I’ll be sharing reflections on the power of storytelling, why meaningful stories still matter in a noisy world, and how photography can be used not just to make images, but to build connection, empathy and impact.

This talk is especially for photographers and creatives who want to make work that feels honest, purposeful and human.

There’ll also be copies of my book Fear & Dreams available on the day.

If you’re in Leeds this weekend, come through, bring a friend, and say hello. I’d love to meet you.

And if you’ve been sitting on an idea, a story, or a project that matters to you, take this as your sign to begin.
Your story may be the very thing that helps someone else feel seen.
