When Khalid was about five, we played Nas’s “I Can” in the car. I’ll never forget one moment: he stood up in the backseat, holding a bag of fast food, and suddenly, without warning, belted out, “I know I can... be what I want to be!”

I was so proud; that was a great day.

That song became our anthem, a reminder of everything I wanted him to believe about himself. As a young dad unsure of the future, I hoped he’d grow up knowing his worth. What I didn’t realize then was how much that simple ritual would shape me, too, lifting me in ways I never expected. Watching him grow, work hard, and achieve has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

I hope you and your loved ones experience the same.

Check out the company Khalid founded, Doctor Paws and please support it. I’m still in awe of the hard work he and his co-founder, Matt, have put into it.

It’s a reminder that we all know we can!

As I was growing up in Atlanta, while some of my peers were laser-focused on becoming artists or actors-I was trying to figure out how to ‘get in the game' to do their deals! I wanted to be Charles King.

Mr. King is from Atlanta & is the gold standard for those who aspired to work as reps in the biz. He made it in Hollywood, a place that historically didn't recognize black intelligence, much less black male excellence.

20 years in the biz, I had not met him until last year with my dear friend @joysimmonsdivadoc met to discuss an idea. Speaking of such, thank you for the lunch excursion & tour of your home, Dr. Joy! Imagine seeing my collegiate friend @rountreeart on a @otis_quaicoe piece! I’m still in awe of your collection!

To have received an invite to the MACRO Pre-Oscars validated the hard work we’ve been putting -not just to gain entry into an event- but to be among the people you admire and respect. The actors you love; Your favorite manager’s and producers. And to share the work I'm doing at World Animal Protection, my new gig, was even better. Almost as good as seeing my brother @terayle_ who is taking Hollywood by storm!

Now, that entry was intense! But, well worth it! I overheard senior executives saying to each other, "I haven't stood in line like this since high school!" But no one acted ill-tempered with security trying to gain entry-it was nothing but love.

To be sure, no one is cooler than @donaldwoodard.esq His reputation precedes him! I saw him smooth talk the security guard to open the rope!

But the coolest person in the building had to be @rashadbilal
First thing I said was, "man, are you a financial advisor or a kingpin?!" The brother was CLEAN! Post the fit, brother!!

Many thanks to Jerome & Taylor for facilitating entry, literally and figuratively! I asked @princerok what made this Pre-Oscar event one of the best. His reply was, “Everyone was cool. EVERYONE! There was no ego here!”

Congrats MACRO! That was an incredible event to a fantastic weekend! How do you curate an event with that level of sophistication, warmth, kindness, and star power?

But then, again, that's precisely who Mr. King is.

I was reflecting on my mom and her birthday today when I recalled something that occurred in college. And I can't remember if I've ever publicly shared this story, so pardon me if I have.

When I was a freshman, there was this young lady I wanted to date, so I asked her out. And fortunate for me, being class president had some advantages! At any rate, I borrowed my friend, Taiwan, Ms. A&T's car (this was well before Uber and Lyft) and we went out to dinner and a movie. First-year students couldn't have cars on campus back then.

Later that year, on our spring break, I took her to meet my mom.

On our drive back, my then-girlfriend said, "I used to think you were bougie as hell, that is until I met your mother. I realized you weren't bougie; you were raised with class!"

And that sums my mother up.

Thank you for bestowing me with the most incredible gifts; an acute sense of self-worth and the confidence to pursue my dreams!

I cherish every day of every moment that I get to speak with you. Happy birthday mom! I love you. by @arthurgsmith
