Moment Of Truth By Moma #SOLD #RedDot🔴Gang #CollageArtByMoma #AnalogCollage @xacto @zuristanback @artyoubetter @mygraphitehouse

ICONoclasts On View Till September 8th @ Emma Darnell Aviation Museum M-F 9AM-3.30PM

Former slave Sojourner Truth, a 19th-century advocate for abolition, temperance, civil and women’s rights, gained renown for her Civil War efforts and a meeting with President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Born Isabella Bomfree in 1797 in New York's Ulster County, she endured brutal treatment through four sales as a slave, even bearing five children with another slave. In 1827, ahead of New York’s slave-freeing law, she fled with her infant, Sophia, to an abolitionist family, the Van Wageners, who aided her freedom and the recovery of her illegally sold son, Peter.

Relocating to NYC in 1828, she worked for a minister and embraced religious revivals by the early 1830s. Renaming herself Sojourner Truth in 1843, she engaged as an itinerant preacher and collaborated with abolitionists like Garrison and Douglass. Although illiterate, she dictated her autobiography in 1850 and gained national recognition through its sales. She championed women’s rights and temperance alongside Stanton and Anthony, and in 1851, her iconic “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech challenged racial and gender biases.

Despite disagreements with Douglass over suffrage priorities, Truth persisted in her advocacy. She embarked on a lecture tour, notably at the 1851 Akron women’s rights conference, where her empowering speech resonated. Her legacy endured through her unwavering dedication to equality.
.
In my work "Moment of Truth" within ICONoclasts, I sought to create a collage that envisions Sojourner Truth in repose, exuding softness and femininity. Despite the harsh, demanding reality that defined her existence, I dared to reshape her as a woman unburdened by the world's oppressive enormity that once bore down on her. Truth is sitting in a field of florals that are specific to Ulster County, Upstate NY. It was an artistic endeavor that compelled me to strip away the weight from her weary shoulders and offer a glimpse into the respite she deserved amidst life's unrelenting struggles
