On Sunday, September 6th, I will be hosting a closeout party for the current exhibit hosted inside of @artifacts_artgallery . With the help of my friend, @yahkovfreeman and other fellow artists and curators , we decided to make this closeout as big as possible! In addition to the art gallery, dj sets by myself @mrsknova_ and @tnghtcrawler , there will be food vendors, car clubs, art vendors, live interviews with curators, and so much more!

I was recently invited by @alivepaint to create a painting for a sneaker-themed art show at @artifacts_artgallery in my hometown of Memphis. My mind instantly went back to growing up there in the 90s and early 2000s.

So I brought it back, mane

“Laced with Legacy” is an homage to where Jookin was born - in the streets around Crystal Palace Roller Rink. I chose to paint a pair of Reebok Workout Plus sneakers with the classic gum soles because they were one of the OG shoes of Gangsta Walk and early Jookin culture.

I remember watching kids battle in school hallways, parking lots, sidewalks. It was our city’s version of ballet. And of course I had to use @three6mafia “Late Nite Tip.” If you grew up in Memphis when I did, you already know… that song lived on repeat, whether you were riding around with your friends or in your first car. For me, it was a maroon Mitsubishi Galant 🫡

The painting captures an older woman, maybe a mother, maybe an auntie. She’s tying the shoe of a little girl. In the puddle that little girl has grown into a Jookin queen, honoring the beginnng by dancing in front of Crystal Palace. It’s a reminder that before every first glide, someone believed in us, cared for us, and helped lace us up.

What started as a homegrown dance in Memphis has become a global movement, with dancers from Japan to France and everywhere in between studying and performing Jookin. This piece is my way of honoring the Black community that created it.. and of course, the women who are continuing to shape its future.

Some of my favorite moments don’t happen behind a computer. They happen in rooms full of creatives.

Building culture has never just been about clothing for me. It’s about creating spaces where ideas are shared, stories are told, and community grows.

Grateful for the opportunity to co-host a live Q&A alongside No IG Sherm at Art Kicks & Cocktails II and spend the evening talking creativity, culture, and the stories behind the work with artists and the community.

Moments like these remind me why I started creating in the first place.

It was Fly Kicks Only in the gallery !!!! Art Kicks X Cocktails ll was a success. Special thanks to the Artists and everyone who tapped in laced up during a thunder storm and packed the space out . Thank you to everyone that pitched in to be apart of this art exhibition it’s so many moving parts behind the scenes and I want to say thank you all especially my label maker. The Swish X Sherm conversation was right on time and well received. We are grateful for the support and we are gearing up for a Merch day and panel discussion with the featured artists.
