This is the second bobbin of my sweater spin from some rich dark purple brown that I carded up recently.

It is incredibly difficult to capture the depth of this yarn on camera and to see all the tiny tweedy pops of colour.

I am loving the halo of the Mongolian Wool from @hilltopkatie

I will be plying this week and am excited to see how it turns out. πŸ–€

It’s been quite some time since I cast something on for myself. After the many years of knitting I’ve done, I only have a handful of knitted pieces in my wardrobe. 3 sweaters, 6 shawls, and few pairs of socks.

This is something I’d like to change. Starting with this #obsidiansweater by @thewoolbarrow

Knitting is an expression of love and I deserve to show myself some too. πŸ–€

following a creative whim…

I started watching @thewoolbarrow podcast a few weeks back during my early morning knit sessions in bed. In one of her episodes she wore her #obsidiansweater in a beautiful rust and oatmeal handspun.

I needed one of my own.

I didn’t have any fibre quite the right colour for the contrast yarn, so I pulled out my drum carder and made a few batts blending several fibre types that were gold and bronze with a dash of red to bring out a more rusty tone.

The mix of polwarth, BFL, merino and silk spun up beautifully. I used long draw to make this yarn, as my main colour is in Patagonia @junipermoonfarm which is a woollen spun yarn and I want to keep the sweater as light and warm as possible.

I’ll be posting my sweater progress soon!

Next up on my wheel…

A sweater spin! I snagged some Mongolian Wool from @hilltopkatie in a beautiful brightly dyed gradient of fushia, orange and chartreuse. While bright colours are so fun to spin, I have always found them challenging to wear.

So I carded the cashmere soft Mongolian wool with some Ebony Haunui @haunuiwool and dark purple hand dyed Polwarth/Yak @westcoastcolour to make 4 batts. (One of them is already on my wheel)

The blend is :
35% Mongolian Wool
30% Polwarth/ Yak
35% Ebony Haunui
(With a dash of undyed silk laps)

I put this blend through my carder twice which blended everything quite thoroughly.

It’s an easy long draw spin, and I love how the brightly dyed Mongolian wool is making tweedy specks of colour.

Aiming for a DK weight to knit myself a cardigan this winter. Pattern to be decided.

All I have wanted to make in the past year is little sweaters for my daughter. It’s been a way for me to feel connected to her while she is away from me.

I suppose that is a sentiment many of us makers feel when we craft something for the people we care about. It’s a way for us to adorn them in our love. It gives us comfort too, to know they are warmed by a piece of our affection wherever they go.

The pattern for this sweater is the Bring Back Baby Jacket by Nina Ruth. A highly enjoyable knit. I knit in a combination of my handspun and @junipermoonfarm Patagonia.

The story of our life is constantly in a state of revision as we are handed unexpected twists and turns.

I’ve shared many of my deepest thoughts with all of you through the years, but summing up where I’ve been and all that’s happened in the last year could fill an entire book.

But here I am, not the same as I was, but still here.

My creativity took a major hit as I adjusted to a huge life change, I barely touched wool until only a few weeks ago.

I had no idea if I was going to return to fibre arts, or if the direction of my life and heart had shifted to such a degree that I needed to forge an entirely new path.

But thanks to knitting a pair of slippers for a loved one, I felt that love return and I found myself deeply longing to play with wool again.

In some ways I am returning to my roots with wool, it’s always been about the love. I love making things for people. I loved making things for all of you.

At this point, I do not see myself coming back in the same capacity to this space, but instead I am going to create purely as the inspiration flows.

And I am creating batts again, I had a theme come to mind that has me feeling overwhelmingly inspired.

Truly, I am grateful to you all for the support and concerned messages I have received from some of you during my absence. Your well wishes meant a lot to me as I was finding my way through a dark time.

I can confidently say that there are good things waiting for us on the other side of loss, things beyond imagining.

An ending is also a beginning.

This new chapter of life is full of potential, who knows where it will take me.πŸ–€

It’s a bit of a gamble with these ones. My first β€œart yarns but not too arty” I wasn’t sure how much texture was too much texture for my taste.

I ended up plying the batt with some a combed top, but looking at these yarns now, I think it would have been interesting to see a yarn that was pure textural batt, I’ll have to try that next time.

Shop Update Tomorrow!

October 8th - 10am PST

This is my second batch of collaboration batts using hand washed, hand processed Haunui wool by Melissa @mellyknits

It also included some magical silk laps and noils dyed by @fatcatknits, a gentle amount in most of the batts, a subtle speckling is what I aimed for.

I felt so motivated and cheerful making this collection, which is sort of a miracle given how stressful the past couple months have been. Perhaps that’s why I was so productive.

Working with wool brings me serenity and clarity.

Wherever I am, when there is wool in my hands, it’s as if I am transported to a cozy cabin in the woods, the tea is brewing, fire crackling, while the wind is blowing outside.

I hope that feeling can feel passed on to you as work with these batts ❀️

Silk laps are my new favourite detail.

Silk laps are a byproduct of the process of creating mulberry silk combed top.

It has the usual shine of mulberry silk but with more texture.

I am completely charmed by the little specks of colour it creates in a yarn, it’s like seeing the stars through the clouds or the twinkle of moonlight on a lake.

These were dyed by the talented and sweet Ginny @fatcatknitsdyer

Many of the batts in my next collection will include them alongside wools by -
@mellyknits
@haunuiwool
@westcoastcolour

Ideas flow easier for me without pressure or force, that’s why spinning helps me think.

Almost all of my ideas for projects, either personal or for my shop, come while I am at the wheel. It’s a place that I find complete rest and ease.

This textured yarn came from a daydream I had while sitting in my spinning nook on the first autumn feeling day on the coast.

I saw a pointy pixie style hat in a soft foggy lavender adorning my daughter’s head as she wandered alongside the ocean one cool morning.

The yarn I wanted to make had to live up to this whimsical feeling, so I used silk noil and silk laps speckled between layers of Rambouillet and polwarth. It did not disappoint.

I can’t wait to see how this knits up ❀️
