There’s no caption that could fully explain what this year of daily drawings has done for me so you’ll just have to trust when I say it was my anchor, my meditation, my line of communication to a part of me I had never accessed before (dramatic, I knowwww.) Basically, even though I’ve been drawing, painting, creating my whole life, this was the first year that I’ve ever truly considered myself an artist.
.
Here are a few tips that helped me keep it going:
.
First of all, I started with the @dothe100dayproject which felt more accessible than an entire year. Once I finished the first 100 days, I just started over at 0 and did another 100, and so on.
.
(Except for the notebooks that were gifted to me) I used the cheapest, shittiest notebooks I could find so that I didn’t feel precious about drawing poorly. And this really helped me embrace my “bad art” days (which are necessary and good, actually.)
.
I never left the house without my sketchbook and a pencil.
.
I ran out of ideas often, which forced me to pay more attention to the things that inspire my art. Consuming art and life and new experiences became just as important as making art.
.
I gave myself grace for the days that I didn’t draw. I came back to it. I kept going. And I’m going to keep going.
.

I try to remind myself often how special it is to live in a city with these kinds of events happening every single weekend. And it’s even better when they’re organized by people who are so warm and creative and truly passionate.

Birdtober is going quite well! There were maybe a couple of days that I didn’t finish the whole sketch but at least getting the idea down on paper felt like a win.
.
Days 4 through 10 covered the kingfisher, mockingbird, blackbird, cardinal, heron, kinglet, and titmouse. Some of them I had to find close relatives because they don’t have a species here in Argentina but as @aholmesartstudio mentioned, there’s no birdtober police!

When I started drawing these red-crested cardinals, I just loved how judgemental they look! It brought to mind all of the times I’ve shared snippets of red flags and bad moments from past relationships with my loving friends (always starting things off with “I’m probably overreacting but..” or “now that I think of it, it was a red flag that..”) only to have them look at me with this WTF glare.
.
It’s a glare I’ve come to realize doesn’t mean “You’re so dumb for tolerating that behavior” but rather, “I love you and you deserve better than that.”
.
Anyway, my art isn’t usually so on-the-nose therapeutic, but this one was quite cathartic.

Day 3 of #birdtober2024 (and day 28 of my 100 day drawing challenge) and I was faced again with the challenge of finding an Argentine bird that fits the international bird list prompt of Bluebird. Unfortunately, we don’t have any close relatives, so I went ahead and just picked a “blue bird.” The one I landed on was the Blue-and-White Swallow or golondrina barranquera.
.
And, because today was a gym day, well, I allowed myself to be inspired.

Day 2 of #birdtober2024 (and day 27 of my 100 day drawing challenge) and the prompt for the international bird list for today was a robin, which we don’t have here in Argentina. But we do have a very close cousin, the Rufous-Bellied Thrush or zorzal colorado.
.
I see them pretty much every time I leave the house, and today I sat down and watched ‘em in Plaza Alberti in my neighborhood.

Official hopping on #birdtober2024 as organized by @aholmesartstudio . I love that she added an international option so I can draw birds from here in Argentina. The bird shown here is the Plush-Crested Jay (reference photo by Hugo Hulsberg on iNaturalist)

I did add in a backpack just in case I feel compelled to join #inktober2024 as well but since I plan on continuing to use graphite pencil, it does make me feel like a bit of a fraud.

Day 21 of 100 of my latest drawing challenge.

There's no shortage of inspiration for art here in Buenos Aires and I just couldn't help but capture this sweet moment of two men sharing a mate in the plaza in the morning.

And I thought maybe they'd like to be among some California redwoods just to bring in a little whimsy.

Been fighting off a nasty bug all this week but the Bad Art Series continues…with some not bad art for Day 19 of 100. I will say I have been doodling and taking more creative risks lately, but sometimes my brain just wants to draw something with clean lines and edges and shadows.

The next one will be worse, I promise.

Hi there from Day 5 of 100 of my Bad Art Series.
.
For this one, I set myself up at @templebarriochino with a beer and my ever patient dog and a view of one of the busiest areas of my neighborhood.

Drawing in public is always hard but it always feels great to look at the sketches in the light of day the next morning.
