Tonight! I’m excited to share that @phoenix_artspace where I’ve had my studio since 2008 is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a members exhibition opening tonight. I arrived back from China just in time! Please join us!
Preview 10 July, 6 – 8pm, speeches at 7.

Phoenix Art Space is home to more than 100 studios and artists, and this exhibition features the work of 85 of them. It functions as a snapshot, a moment in time in the flow of our history and our future. What you will find is a joyous display of human creativity, encompassing painting, sculpture, film, photography, textiles, writing, ceramics, and everything in between.

Beyond the Studio is the keystone in a year of celebrations to mark the 30 years since the organisation became a charity in 1995, with a mission to support artists and present art to public audiences.

The exhibition title recognises that, while the studio is the starting point for each artist and maker, community is also built in the stairwells and corridors, where creativity is nurtured by chance meetings and conversations. It recognises that what artists imagine and create in their individual studios reaches the world through exhibitions, screenings, community outreach and engagement, teaching, and much more.

At its heart, this exhibition becomes, like our annual open studios event, a site where multiple voices and ideas converge in one place over a period of time. These are also gathered through a publication accompanying the exhibition, where all participating artists have contributed 100-word personal histories of their time at Phoenix.

This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of John Varah (1959 – 2026), who, with others, brought this organisation into being. His tenacity, vitality and creative ingenuity exemplify the spirit of Phoenix.

He is much missed.

What does a ghost sound like when it's made of data, history, and stone? In our latest artist spotlight, we sat down with artist Joseph Young to unpack his beautiful project, Sonic Hauntings in a Big House.

Over four years, Joseph used binaural microphones to uncover the fading echoes and complex colonial histories hidden deep within Ireland’s historic Big Houses and ancient forests.

Sound artist Joseph Young will include recordings from his recent album Sonic Hauntings in a Big House, released in December 2024 on Irish sound art label, Farpoint Recordings. As a starting point for this investigation, the curation will then ripple outwards as we listen to its circles of influence. Joseph’s work was created by exploring the extensive family archive held at Bray’s Killruddery House & Gardens in Ireland as part of a practice-based Phd. He devised both a geolocated soundscape in Killruddery’s grounds and this accompanying record, which further proposes a spectral glimpse of a lost past. by @artofnoises

Sonic Hauntings In A Big House, my new vinyl LP and Digital Album was released on 5th December by the wonderful @farpointrecordings in Ireland.

“Here it’s houseness is built from fictions rather than stone…Thus I hear the elegiac moments of Young’s album not as an end to the big house’s history but as the celebration of the end of its singular narration”  Salomé Voegelin, extract from her essay ‘The Big House Made Of Sound’.  
Sound artist Joseph Young releases his debut album ‘Sonic Hauntings in a Big House’ on the 5th December through Farpoint Recordings. A specialist in the binaural field recording technique, Young’s recent artistic practice focuses on aspects of sonic hauntology as it relates to the heritage space. The album structure of ‘Inside’ and ‘Outside’, carefully arranged across two sides of vinyl represents the domestic and the external, and presents the listener with an elegiac soundtrack which subtly deconstructs the immutable layers of power and privilege, as it reverberates throughout its imaginary halls.   The vinyl album comes with an inner sleeve and a 4 page pamphlet featuring the special commissioned essay ‘The Big House Made Of Sound’ by writer Salomé Voegelin. The Digital Album features an extra track not on the vinyl LP.

Last month of our @the_ceramic_house show Edges on now at @wattsgallery
These pieces are called Foraminifera II & III displayed in the sumptuous Mary Watts Gallery in Limnerslease House. Foraminifera was conceived in residence @interfaceinagh and is composed of designs that represent tiny microscopic creatures forming all the grains of sand on the peninsula of Dog’s Bay in Connemara, only visible through a microscope.
Edges continues until the 3rd of November, opening hours 1030 to 5 pm daily. If you wish to visit, you can use the Edges20 discount when booking online. Entry admission includes Limnerslease house, Watts Gallery and all current exhibitions and the chapel, Mary’s masterpiece. Don’t forget to take headphones to listen to Joseph Young‘s sound trail leading from the house to the chapel.

October is slowly approaching and we're already very much looking forward to the amazing label event by Farpoint Recordings from Ireland at Morphine Raum in 12 October in the context of "ANIMA MUNDI #5 - environmental relationships through sound art and cultural exchange" and Zeitgeist Irland 24!

The event is curated by the founders of the label, Anthony Kelly and David Stalling, who bring over exciting artists of the label, who will perform live, and a good selection of CDs and vinyls - take the chance!

Next to Anthony and David, Phil Maguire will be present and we will celebrate his new record release "faint red / pencil lines". Harpist Niamh O'Brien will join the live sets, which will take place in different constellations, and together with Joseph Young we will listen to the test pressing of his upcoming album "Sonic Hauntings in a Big House" ( the vinyl won't get ready by time as planned, unfortunately)!

On top of this great lineup, visual artist Doreen Kennedy presents a selection of Farpoint Recordings-artworks for the label releases - do not miss! 🍀🎧🇨🇮
