Tonight! I’m excited to share that @phoenix_artspace where I’ve had my studio since 2008 is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a members exhibition opening tonight. I arrived back from China just in time! Please join us! Preview 10 July, 6 – 8pm, speeches at 7. Phoenix Art Space is home to more than 100 studios and artists, and this exhibition features the work of 85 of them. It functions as a snapshot, a moment in time in the flow of our history and our future. What you will find is a joyous display of human creativity, encompassing painting, sculpture, film, photography, textiles, writing, ceramics, and everything in between. Beyond the Studio is the keystone in a year of celebrations to mark the 30 years since the organisation became a charity in 1995, with a mission to support artists and present art to public audiences. The exhibition title recognises that, while the studio is the starting point for each artist and maker, community is also built in the stairwells and corridors, where creativity is nurtured by chance meetings and conversations. It recognises that what artists imagine and create in their individual studios reaches the world through exhibitions, screenings, community outreach and engagement, teaching, and much more. At its heart, this exhibition becomes, like our annual open studios event, a site where multiple voices and ideas converge in one place over a period of time. These are also gathered through a publication accompanying the exhibition, where all participating artists have contributed 100-word personal histories of their time at Phoenix. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of John Varah (1959 – 2026), who, with others, brought this organisation into being. His tenacity, vitality and creative ingenuity exemplify the spirit of Phoenix. He is much missed. Phoenix Artspace, 10-14 Waterloo Place, Brighton BN2 9NB Dates: 11 July – 13 September, Wednesday-Sunday 12-5pm Speeches at 7 with BSL interpretation by Dr Sue MacLaine

What does a ghost sound like when it's made of data, history, and stone? In our latest artist spotlight, we sat down with artist Joseph Young to unpack his beautiful project, Sonic Hauntings in a Big House. Over four years, Joseph used binaural microphones to uncover the fading echoes and complex colonial histories hidden deep within Ireland’s historic Big Houses and ancient forests. From technological dowsing to archiving the spectral resonance of the landscape, this interview explores the delicate intersection of field recording, philosophy, and chance. Head to the link in our bio to read the full interview. https://farpointrecordings.com/portfolio-item/joseph-young-sonic-hauntings-in-a-big-house-interview/ #SonicHauntology #JosephYoung #FieldRecording #SoundArt #AmbientMusic #IrishSoundscape #Hauntology #BinauralAudio #ExperimentalMusic #NewMusic

Please join us on Wednesday 28 May for Listen Club #24 @the_rose_hill Curated by Joseph Young @artofnoises Door: 7pm Book with Ticketlab LINK IN BIO Sound artist Joseph Young will include recordings from his recent album Sonic Hauntings in a Big House, released in December 2024 on Irish sound art label, Farpoint Recordings. As a starting point for this investigation, the curation will then ripple outwards as we listen to its circles of influence. Joseph’s work was created by exploring the extensive family archive held at Bray’s Killruddery House & Gardens in Ireland as part of a practice-based Phd. He devised both a geolocated soundscape in Killruddery’s grounds and this accompanying record, which further proposes a spectral glimpse of a lost past.

The rose! It’s so exciting to come back from a month away and find the garden looking this fabulous. This is absolutely the best time of year for the garden which wonderfully coincides with all the festivals in Brighton throughout May. The Ceramic House is not opening this year as I’ve only just got back from a residency in France but it means that both @artofnoises & @kayaplin will be able to open our studios @phoenix_artspace next weekend. In the meantime, we’re enjoying the garden in the sunshine. There’s a lovely anecdote that goes with this Rose. About 10 years ago a visitor to @the_ceramic_house told me that she grew up here in this house and her father planted the rose and we calculated at the time it was about 70 years old so let’s just say we’re celebrating the 80th anniversary of this rose this year. And it smells like heaven. Delicate, intoxicating.

Come join us for Listen Club #24 with Joseph Young! Tickets £5 link in bio. The term ‘Hauntology’ is most often associated with the Ghost Box label, but there is much more to it than that. Hauntology as it relates to sound has its roots in place, as Mark Fisher noted the word hauntology contains “haunt”, which is also a synonym for a familiar place. In sonic hauntology, this sense of the familiar is often undermined and augmented by what Freud referred to as “the uncanny”, or the “unheimlich”. In this edition of the Listen Club, Joseph will include recordings from his recent album "Sonic Hauntings in a Big House" released in December 2024 on Irish sound art label, Farpoint Recordings. As a starting point for this investigation, the curation will then ripple outwards as we listen to its circles of influence. Joseph's work was created through exploring the extensive family archive held at Bray’s Killruddery House & Gardens in Ireland as part of a practice-based PhD, where he devised both a geolocated soundscape in Killruddery’s grounds and this accompanying record, which further proposes a spectral glimpse of a lost past. In keeping with this investigation of place through audio, we will listen to a selection of work by artists who are not usually considered part of the hauntology canon. These may include: The Caretaker, Janet Cardiff, Chris Watson, Glenn Gould and Brian Eno. --------------------------------------- Listen Club is about listening together is in the same space, with the possibility of sharing impressions and casual discussion afterwards. Listen Club hopes to provide a counterpoint to the quick paced personal consumption of music with a more patient shared experience; a deep listen, together, in order to foster community. A programme of unusual sound-works, soundscape composition, and music from the present and the past, is chosen by Sound Art Brighton artists and invited guests. Curators will guide the experience - briefly discussing the details of the selections and providing background on the music and artists chosen.

A few highlights from last week‘s trip to Portugal to collect my work from @museusdeaveiro -the last iteration of @bienalceramicaaveiro and @armazem_das_artes_alcobaca from the @internationalacademyofceramics show that just ended. We arrived in Porto where we went to visit @sofia.beca and @sonoscopia which was very inspiring especially for @artofnoises We had a guided tour of @aveiroartshouse where we discovered the wonderful home of #vascobranco and a very special visit to the #TalkingMachines Museum in Alcobaça with #AlbertoGuerreiro. It was very lovely to stay in @vistaalegrefazendahotel which is actually in the old @vistaalegreofficial factory and the ever stunning @mosteirodealcobaca @montebelohotels where the last @internationalacademyofceramics congress took place. The trip was rounded off in Lisbon by which time we were manhandling a very heavy and large amount of suitcases, maybe I’ll continue making smaller scale work!
