This beautiful seamstress’s chatelaine gives us a glimpse into the practicality and usefulness of the chatelaine from the Victorian era.

Durable and built for a busy and skilled seamstress, this chatelaine demonstrates the crossover of beauty and practicality that the Victorians are known and loved for.

Although a couple of generations older, I can’t help but think of someone like Mrs Hughes from Downton Abbey, busy running a household, always on the move and ready to get the job done ‘now’. Yet another treasure that has endured for well over 100years that tells a story about how life once was ✨ taken in New Zealand by @artofsoft_

A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen - Four-Volume Set, c.1830s-1840s

A complete four-volume set of Robert Chambers’ A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, dedicated by special permission to King William IV, with the dedication dated Edinburgh, 7 November 1834.

Particularly notable are the handsome period half-calf bindings by Murray & Stewart, Booksellers & Stationers of Paisley, whose original “Bound by” label survives inside. Elaborately gilt-tooled raised spines, oxblood title labels, marbled boards, endpapers and page edges create an exceptionally striking matched set.

Each volume bears the early ownership inscription “Edward & Elizabeth Buchanan.” Foxing and historic moisture staining are present throughout, while the magnificent bindings remain remarkably well preserved.

An authentic nineteenth-century Scottish library set with enormous appeal for collectors of antiquarian bindings, Scottish history and Dark Academia interiors.
